Centre cuts Mudra loans target to Rs 3 trillion in FY22

  • The government has set the loans disbursement target under the PM Mudra Yojana (PMMY) at Rs 3 trillion for 2021-22 (FY22).
  • This target is lower than previous year. For FY21, the target was set at Rs 3.21 trillion.

Bhubaneswar becomes first city in India to achieve 100% vaccination against covid-19

  • In a new milestone achievement, Odisha’s Bhubaneswar has become the first city in India to achieve 100 percent COVID-19 vaccination.
  • The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) had launched a massive vaccination drive against Covid-19 across 55 vaccination centres.
  • BMC had set benchmark target for different categories of people to complete the vaccination process within the specific timelines latest by July 31, 2021.

Seven Indian Companies Feature in Fortune Global 500 list for 2021, Walmart top Company by Revenue

  • Seven Indian companies have found place in 2021 Fortune’s Global 500 list, which was released on August 02, 2021.
  • The Fortune Global 500 is an annual ranking of the top 500 enterprises globally, as measured by business revenues.
  • Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd is the highest-ranked Indian company in the list in terms of revenue, with revenues of nearly $63 billion. It is placed at 155th spot globally.
  • Globally, Walmart has topped the list in terms of revenue for the eighth consecutive year and the 16th time since 1995.

IMF approves US$650 Billion allocation of Special Drawing Rights in funding for fight against Covid-19

  • The Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have approved a record general allocation of $650 billion in IMF Special Drawing Rights (SDR), to help boost global liquidity.
  • The $650 billion SDR allocation aims to support member countries, especially emerging and developing nations, battling the coronavirus pandemic and the economic downturn it has caused.
  • This allocation is the largest-ever distribution in the IMF’s 77-year history, in terms of monetary reserves assets.
  • The allocation will become effective from August 23, 2021.
  • The newly created SDRs will be credited to member countries in proportion to their existing quotas shareholding in the Fund.

RBI Authorises IndusInd Bank to act as an ‘Agency Bank’

  • The IndusInd Bank has been empanelled by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to act as an ‘Agency Bank’.
  • As an Agency Bank, IndusInd becomes eligible to carry out transactions related to all kinds of government led businesses.
  • This decision is based on RBI guideline that authorises scheduled private sector banks as agency banks of the regulator for the conduct of government business.
  • IndusInd Bank now joins few other private banks of the country listed as Agency Bank of RBI, to carry out general banking business on behalf of the central and state government, apart from offering its customers the convenience of undertaking routine financial transactions through its banking platform.

HDFC Bank launches ‘Dukandar Overdraft Scheme’ for small retailers

  • India’s largest private lender, HDFC Bank, has launched an overdraft facility for small retailers called ‘Dukandar Overdraft Scheme’, to help shopkeepers and merchants in easing their cash crunch.
  • The scheme has been launched in partnership with the CSC SPV, government’s e-governance services delivery arm that enables government schemes and services through common service centres (CSCs).
  • Who are eligible: Retailers operating for a minimum of three years are eligible for the scheme.
  • How to avail the service: Beneficiaries need to provide six months bank statement from any bank.
  • HDFC Bank will approve the overdraft limit based on the bank statements as under:
    • Minimum overdraft limit: Rs 50,000
    • Maximum overdraft limit: Rs 10 lakh
  • Bank will not seek any collateral security, business financials, and income tax returns from the retailers, applying for the scheme.

  • Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur launched the theme song for the Indian Paralympic contingent in New Delhi on August 03, 2021.
  • The song is titled “Kar De Kamaal Tu”.
  • The composer and singer of the song is Sanjeev Singh, a Divyang cricket player from Lucknow.
  • 54 para-sportspersons across 9 sports disciplines, are participating in Paralympic Games in Tokyo, beginning August 24, 2021.

Germany’s Alexander Zverev wins Tennis Men’s Singles Gold at Tokyo Olympics

  • World No. 5 Alexander Zverev of Germany beat Russian Karen Khachanov 6-3 6-1, to win gold in men’s single tennis at Tokyo Olympics, on August 01, 2021.
  • With this won, the 24-year-old, Zverev has become the first German man to win a singles Olympic gold. He is yet to win a Grand Slam title.
  • Zverev is also the only second German player to win Olympic singles gold, after Steffi Graff won at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

  • Marcell Jacobs of Italy has claimed the men’s 100 metres gold title at the Tokyo Olympics on August 01, 2021, becoming the first Italian to take the most coveted title in athletics.
  • The 26-year-old Jacob achieved the feat in 9.80 seconds.
  • Fred Kerley of United States won the silver in 9.84 seconds while Andre de Grasse of Canada took the bronze in 9.89 seconds.
  • In Women’s category, Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica won the women’s 100 metres title in 10.61 seconds.
  • Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (10.74) of Jamaica took the silver and Shericka Jackson (10.76) of Jamaica won the bronze medal.

USA beats Mexico in extra-time to clinch 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Football

  • In football, the U.S. Men’s National Team defeated Mexico 1-0 in extra time, to be crowned champion of the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup on August 01, 2021.
  • This is the seventh Gold Cup title for the USA.
  • The CONCACAF Gold Cup is the biennial international men’s football championship organized by CONCACAF, the football ruling body in North America, Central American, and the Caribbean.
