India’s Poverty Declines from 55% to 28% in a Decade till 2015-16: UNDP Report

  • According to the global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) 2018, India drastically reduced its poverty rate  from 55 percent to 28 percent between 2005-06 and 2015-16.
  • The report was developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).
  • However, the report said that India still had 364 million poor in 2015-16, the largest for any country, although it is down from 635 million in 2005-06.
  • Globally, the poverty rate was found to be 23%. This means 1.3 billion people live in multidimensional poverty in the 105 developing countries surveyed.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia regions accounted together for 83% (more than 1.1 billion) of all multidimensionally poor people in the world.
