New Delhi’s IGI Airport Named India’s Best Airport; Singapore Changi Airport Tops: Skytrax World Airport Awards

  • Singapore Changi Airport has been crowned the World’s Best Airport hub for the seventh consecutive year according to the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2019.
  • The Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) won the second position while Incheon International Airport was third.
  • The Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi featured at number 59.
  • Other Indian Airports in the list includes Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai (64), Rajiv Gandhi Hyderabad International Airport (66) and Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (69).
  • The Skytrax World Airport Awards are voted for by customers in a global airport customer satisfaction survey.
  • The list is complied by UK-based Skytrax, a consultancy firm which runs an airline and airport review and ranking site, featuring 100 airports

India’s Energy Demand Increases 4% in 2018 Vs 2.3% Worldwide: Global Energy and CO2 Status Report 2018

  • According to the International Energy Agency (IEA’s) Global Energy & CO2 status report 2018, the primary energy demand in India increased by 4 percent (over 35 million tonne of oil equivalent) in 2018. This accounts for 11 percent of global demand growth.
  • Globally, the energy consumption grew by 2.3 percent in 2018 which is nearly twice the average rate of growth since 2010.
  • Consequently, the global energy-related CO2 emissions rose up by 1.7% to 33 gigatonnes.
  • China, US, and India together accounted for nearly 70 per cent of the rise in energy demand.

India’s Poverty Declines from 55% to 28% in a Decade till 2015-16: UNDP Report

  • According to the global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) 2018, India drastically reduced its poverty rate  from 55 percent to 28 percent between 2005-06 and 2015-16.
  • The report was developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).
  • However, the report said that India still had 364 million poor in 2015-16, the largest for any country, although it is down from 635 million in 2005-06.
  • Globally, the poverty rate was found to be 23%. This means 1.3 billion people live in multidimensional poverty in the 105 developing countries surveyed.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia regions accounted together for 83% (more than 1.1 billion) of all multidimensionally poor people in the world.

Nepal Investment Summit 2019 to be Held on March 29-30 in Kathmandu

  • The 3rd edition of the Nepal Investment Summit will be held in Kathmandu on March 29-30, 2019.
  • The first edition of the Summit was held in the year 1992, followed by the second edition in 2017.
  • The Summit aims to bring forward Nepal as a promising investment destination and enhance its recent encouraging developments.
  • About 600 foreign delegates and investors from 40 countries are participating in the Summit with maximum participation from China and India.

Manohar Ajgaonkar replaces Dhavlikar as Deputy CM of Goa

  • Manohar Ajgaonkar has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Goa. He is the Tourism Minister of Goa.
  • The development comes a day after Sudin Dhavalikar was dropped as the Deputy Chief Minister and two MLAs of MGP merged their party’s legislative wing with the BJP.
  • Now the Two Deputy CM of Goa are: Vijai Sardesai and Manohar Ajgaonkar

BCCI ombudsman D.K. Jain doubles up as BCCI ethics officer

  • Justice D.K. Jain who was recently appointed as the BCCI Ombudsman has now also appointed as the ethics officer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Hopman Cup replaced by new ATP Cup

  • The Hopman Cup of Tennis will now not be held and has been replaced by ATP Cup.
  • The Hopman Cup was a mixed gender tennis tournament played in Perth, Australia. The 31st edition of the tournament was the last edition of the game and ended in January 2019.
  • Now the tournament has been replaced by ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Cup that is an all men’s event.
