Government reduces interest rates of Small Saving Schemes by 10 bps

  • The central government has reduced the Interest Rates on Small Savings Schemes by 10 basis points. The new rates applicable for the July-September 2019 quarter is given below:

RBI sets minimum Leverage Ratio shall be 4% for DSIBs and 3.5% for other banks

  • The Reserve Bank of India has announced that from October 01, 2019 the minimum Leverage Ratio for Basel III Capital Regulations will be 4% for Domestic Systemically Important Banks (DSIBs) and 3.5% for other banks.

RBI launches CISBI portal for keeping track of Banking Outlets

  • The Reserve Bank maintains the directory of all Banking Outlets/offices in India. This directory is known as the “Master Office File” (MOF) system. Until now the system was updated manually as banks reported the details of Banking Outlets via email.
  • Now to automate this process RBI has launched a portal Central Information System for Banking Infrastructure (CISBI) (https://cisbi.rbi.org.in) to replace the MOF system.
  • It will also allot the Basic Statistical Return (BSR) code / Authorised Dealer (AD) code to BOs/offices.

SBI-led consortium picks Grant Thornton as resolution professional (RP) for Jet Airways

  • The Jet Airways lenders consortium has selected Ashish Chhawchharia of advisory firm Grant Thornton for the role of interim resolution professional (RP) for the airline’s bankruptcy proceedings.
  • The consortium led by State Bank of India (SBI) had opted for a resolution of the grounded airline under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).
  • With the company in NCLT, the lenders face the possibility of recovering a fraction of their dues worth 8,400 crore. Jet’s total liabilities, including unpaid salaries and vendor dues, are nearly15,000 crore.

Central Government sets deadline for states to roll out the ‘one nation, one ration card as June 30, 2020

  • The central government has given State/UT Government a deadline of June 30, 2020 for implementing the ‘one nation, one ration card’ system.
  • Under the scheme, the beneficiary can buy subsidised foodgrains from ration shops in any part of the country.

India, Indonesia set USD 50 billion trade target by 2025

  • India and Indonesia have set a USD 50 billion target for bilateral trade over the next six years i.e till 2025. Trade between the two countries in 2016 was USD 12.9 billion. It rose 28.7%  to USD 18.13 billion in 2017
  • The decision was taken in a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joko Widodo who discussed ways to deepen cooperation in a number of key areas including economy, defence and maritime security.
  • The two leaders are in Osaka, Japan for the G20 Summit, met to discuss ways to boost bilateral ties and enhance cooperation in trade and investment.

Ministry of Tribal Affairs Launches ‘Go Tribal Campaign’ to Promote Use of Tribal Products

  • The Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Smt. Renuka Singh launched the “Go Tribal Campaign” of Tribes India to widely promote the use of tribal products.
  • The Minister also launched ‘Tribes India’ globally through Amazon Global Selling. Tribes India will now be able to sell its product in global marketplace through Amazon.
  • Tribes India is a brand under TRIFED (Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India), Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
  • Tribes India has also collaborated with Central Silk Board for development, promotion, marketing of tribal silk products and empowerment of tribal reelers and weavers

India Successfully Test Fires Nuclear-Capable Missile Prithvi-II

  • The indigenously developed nuclear-capable missile Prithvi-II was successfully test-fired by India from Launch Complex-III of the Integrated Test Range, ITR at Chandipur off the Odisha coast on June 27, 2019.
  • The surface-to-surface missile has a strike range of 350 km, is capable of carrying 500 to 1000 kg of warheads and is powered by liquid propulsion twin engines.

Pullela Gopichand Receives Honorary Doctorate by IIT Kanpur

  • India’s chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand has been bestowed with the honorary doctorate by IIT Kanpur on the occasion of their 52nd convocation on June 28, 2019.
  • The honour was bestowed on Gopichand by former chairman of ISRO  and Chairman of board of Governors of IIT Kanpur, Prof K Radhakrishnan.
  • Infosys Chairperson Sudha Murthy and missile woman Tessy Thomas were other two to received this honour.
  • The former recipients of this prestigious award are Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and former Prime Minister Mr Manmohan Singh. 

Marcus Trescothick announces retirement from professional cricket

  • Cricketer Marcus Trescothick has announced retirement from professional cricket. He played for Somerset. He is 43 years in age. 
  • In the year 2008, he announced retirement from international cricket. Before that he played for England. After that, he started playing professional cricket for Somerset.

International Day of the Tropics: 29 June

  • The International Day of the Tropics is observed every year on June 29 to raise awareness to the specific challenges faced by tropical areas and also underline the important role that countries in the tropics will play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • The day was designated by United Nations General Assembly in 2016 to mark the anniversary of the launch of ‘State of the Tropics Report’ by Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi on June 29, 2014.

National Statistics Day: June 29

  • The Government of India celebrates Statistics Day on June 29 every year to popularize the use of Statistics in everyday life and sensitize the public as to how Statistics helps in shaping and framing policies.
  • The day marks the birth anniversary of Indian scientist Prof. P C Mahalanobis, in recognition of his invaluable contribution in establishing the National Statistical System. 
  • The theme of Statistics Day, 2019 is “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. 

Veteran Telugu Writer Abburi Chaya Devi Passes Away

  • Noted Telugu story writer Abburi Chaya Devi passed away at the age of 86.
  • She received the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 2005 for her book ‘Thana Margam.’
