India-France Air Exercise Garuda-VI To be held at Mont-de-Marsan in July 2019

  • The Indian Air Force will head over to France to participate in bilateral air exercise named Exercise ‘Garuda-VI’ between Indian and French Air Force.
  • The sixth edition of Exercise Garuda will be held at French Air Force Base, Mont-de-Marsan
    from 01-12 July 2019.

Kerala Tops NITI Aayog’s Second Edition of “Healthy States, Progressive India” Ranking

  • NITI Aayog released the Second Edition of “Healthy States, Progressive India” on June 25, 2019.
  • The ranking is done under three categories namely larger states, smaller states and Union territories (UTs).
  • The Health Index report is based on 23 indicators and takes into account the period 2015-16 (base year) to 2017-18 (reference year). 
  • The “Healthy States, Progressive India” report is an annual systematic performance tool to measure the performance of the States and UTs on their year on year incremental change in health outcomes, as well as, their overall performance with respect to each other.
  • The report has been prepared by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with technical assistance from the World Bank.

India is the cheapest solar energy producer: IRENA report

  • India is now the forerunner in producing solar power at the lowest cost globally in 2018 as per a report by International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
  • India is followed by Italy at second and China at third. India was estimated to have the lowest total installed costs for new utility-scale solar PV projects that were commissioned in 2018 at USD 793/kW.

Vaishno Devi Shrine to Have Dedicated Disaster Response Force by September 2020

  • The religious pilgrimage, Mata Vaishno Devi shrine will get a dedicated in-house disaster response force by September 2020. 
  • The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) plans to train 180 employees by September 2020 to prepare a dedicated disaster response force for the shrine 
  • The shrine board will also set up an emergency operation centre as part of its disaster preparedness. 

UAE Launches UN-Developed Anti-Money Laundering Platform ‘goAML’

  • The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Central Bank of UAE has launched a new anti-money laundering platform, called goAML, to help in combating money laundering as well as financing of terrorism locally and internationally.
  • The platform has been developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
  • This makes UAE the first country in the Gulf region to go live with the UN developed system.

Krishnaswamy Natarajan appointed as next Director General of Indian Coast Guard

  • Krishnaswamy Natarajan has been appointed as the next Director General of Indian Coast Guard and will take charge from June 30, 2019.
  • He will replace Rajendra Singh. Natarajan joined the Coast Guard on January 18, 1984, and holds a Masters Degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from Madras University.

Amit Agarwal appointed Chairman of Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI)

  • Amit Agarwal has been named as the new chairman of Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). He is the Senior Vice-President and Country Head of Amazon India.
  • He will replace former Google India MD Rajan Anandan. Yatra co-founder and CEO Dhruv Shringi will take over as the new vice-chairman of IAMAI

Former General Mohamed Ould Ghazouani Wins Presidential Election of Mauritania

  • Mauritania’s ruling party candidate Mohamed Ould Ghazouani has won the country’s presidential election with 52% of the vote.
  • He will assume office in August 2019 to succeed incumbent President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.
  • Ghazouani is a former general and defense minister of the country.

China’s Qu Dongyu Elected New Director-General of UN food agency FAO

  • Qu Dongyu of China has been elected as the new Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) based in Rome, Italy.
  • The 56-year-old Qu will officially take over as new FAO chief with effect from August 1, 2019.
  • He is the first Chinese national to be elected as FAO Director-General.

The Tribune Journalist Rachna Khaira Bags RedInk Journalist of the Year 2019 Award

  • Rachna Khaira, former journalist at The Tribune has bagged the prestigious RedInk Award for ‘Journalist of the Year’ 2019 for her far-reaching expose in 2018 on the functioning of the Unique Identification Authority of Indian (UIDAI) and its Aadhaar data cache. 
  • The RedInk Awards for Excellence in Journalism has been instituted by Mumbai Press Club to encourage good quality reporting and analysis, fair play and high ethical standards in Indian journalism.

Malayalam Film Veyil Marangal Wins Award at 22nd Shanghai International Film Festival

  • Bijukumar Damodaran directed Malayalam film, Veyil Marangal (Trees Under the Sun), has won the award for ‘Outstanding Artistic Achievement’ at the 22nd Shanghai International Film Festival.
  • It is the first Indian film to win an award at the festival.
  • Veyilmarangal was among the 14 films shortlisted out of 3964 entries submitted from 112 countries in the prestigious Golden Goblet Award competition.

Meenakshi Lekhi Writes Her First Novel ‘The New Delhi Conspiracy’

  • BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi has written her debut novel titled ‘The New Delhi Conspiracy’.
  • Ms. Lekhi is a Supreme Court lawyer by profession
  • The book has been co-authored by Krishna Kumar who works with her and is published by Harper Collins.

  • The renowned Hindu spiritual guru Swami Satyamitranand Giri Maharaj passed away. He was 87.
  • He was born as Ambika Prasad in Agra.
  • The famous seer was the founder and head of Bharat Mata Mandir, a famous temple in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.
