  • Union Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a slew of measures on June 28, 2021, to provide relief to people and businesses affected by the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The Minister announced a total of 17 measures worth Rs. 6,28,993 crore.
  • These 17 measures have further been grouped into 3 broad categories
    1. Economic Relief from Pandemic (8)
    2. Strengthening Public Health (1)
    3. Impetus for Growth & Employment (8)

China officially turns on first two units of world’s second-biggest hydropower dam Baihetan Dam

  • The Government of China officially turned on the first two generating units of the Baihetan Dam, the world’s second-biggest hydroelectric dam, on June 28, 2021, to start generating energy..
  • The Baihetan Dam is set up on the Jinsha River, in southwestern China.
  • The dam is a 289-meter-tall (954-foot-tall) double-curvature arch dam, having 16 generating units.
  • Each unit will have generating capacity of 1 million kilowatts, making it the second biggest in size after the “Three Gorges Dam” opened in 2003 on the Yangtze, with 22.5 million kilowatts of generating capacity.
  • Through the Baihetan Dam, Chinese government aims to curb surging fossil fuel demand by building more hydropower capacity.
  • Both the dams have been built by the state-owned Three Gorges Group Corp., the world’s biggest investor in hydro, solar and wind generation.

Ukraine and US Navy Co-hosts ‘Exercise Sea Breeze 2021’ in Black Sea 

  • The Exercise Sea Breeze 2021 (SB21), co-hosted by Ukraine Navy and the United States, began on June 28, 2021 in the Black Sea region.
  • The annual multinational maritime exercise will continue till July 10, 2021.
  • The exercise will involve sea, land, and air components, to enhance interoperability and capability among participating nations.
  • The Ex-SB21 will see the participation of largest number of nations in the exercise’s history with 32 countries from six continents involving 5,000 troops, 32 ships, 40 aircraft, and 18 special operations and dive teams scheduled to participate.
  • The Exercise Sea Breeze is taking place since 1997 to bring most Black Sea nations and NATO Allies and partners together to train and operate with NATO members in the pursuit of building increased capability.
  • List of 32 participating nations are, Albania, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, France, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Morocco, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Senegal, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the United States.

  • The Prime Minister of Sweden, Stefan Lofven, has announced his resignation on June 28, 2021 after he lost a confidence vote in parliament.
  • The 63-year-old Lofven is the first Swedish government leader to be defeated by a no confidence vote.
  • He was serving as the prime minister of Sweden since 2014.

Turkmenistan’s Ashgabat is world’s most expensive city for foreign workers, Mumbai tops among Indian cities

  • As per the 2021 Cost of Living Survey by consultancy firm Mercer, Turkmenistan’s capital, Ashgabat has been named the world’s most expensive city for foreign workers.
  • It is followed by Hong Kong at second position, Beirut (Lebanon) and Tokyo (Japan) at third and fourth place respectively.
  • Among Indian cities, Mumbai is the most expensive city. It is ranked at 78th position. In 2020, it was placed at 60th place.
  • Other Indian cities in the list are New Delhi (117), Chennai (158), Bengaluru (170), and Kolkata (181).
  • The 2021 Mercer Cost of Living Survey has ranked 209 cities across five continents.
  • The cities were ranked by measuring the comparative cost of more than 200 items, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment.
  • The survey used New York City as the base city and currency movements were measured against the US dollar.

Indian Journalist P Sainath wins Japan’s Fukuoka Grand Prize for 2021

  • Renowned Indian journalist and founder of PARI (People’s Archive of Rural India), Palagummi Sainath  has been awarded the Fukuoka Grand Prize for 2021.
  • The award is given to individuals and organisations for their work in preserving Asian culture, by Japan’s Fukuoka city and the Fukuoka City International Foundation.
  • The Fukuoka Prize is given in three categories: Academic Prize, Culture Prize and the Grand Prize.
  • Among these the Grand Prize is considered the biggest one. The last Indian to be awarded the prize was A. R. Rahman (2016).

  • The journalist-author Sundeep Misra has come out with his new book titled Fiercely Female: The Dutee Chand Story’ .
  • Dutee Chand is the first openly homosexual athlete from India.
  • The book narrates the life of Dutee Chand of how she overcame poverty and an inadequate training and sporting culture to become one of India’s premier athletes.
  • It also details the gender-identity controversy, that abruptly interrupted her dreams as she was dropped from the 2014 Commonwealth Games on the charge that she was ineligible to compete as a female athlete.
