Turkmenistan’s Ashgabat is world’s most expensive city for foreign workers, Mumbai tops among Indian cities
- As per the 2021 Cost of Living Survey by consultancy firm Mercer, Turkmenistan’s capital, Ashgabat has been named the world’s most expensive city for foreign workers.
- It is followed by Hong Kong at second position, Beirut (Lebanon) and Tokyo (Japan) at third and fourth place respectively.
- Among Indian cities, Mumbai is the most expensive city. It is ranked at 78th position. In 2020, it was placed at 60th place.
- Other Indian cities in the list are New Delhi (117), Chennai (158), Bengaluru (170), and Kolkata (181).
- The 2021 Mercer Cost of Living Survey has ranked 209 cities across five continents.
- The cities were ranked by measuring the comparative cost of more than 200 items, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment.
- The survey used New York City as the base city and currency movements were measured against the US dollar.
