Centre plans to form empowered group of secretaries under Cabinet secretary to review implementation of PM GatiShakti

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has decided to set up an institutional framework to implement, support and monitor the entire programme of PM GatiShakti the national master plan for ‘multi-modal connectivity’.
  • Under this, the government will constitute an empowered group of secretaries (EGOS), a network planning group and a technical support unit.
  • EGOS: This will have the cabinet secretary as the Chairperson, the head of the commerce ministry’s logistics division as convenor and secretaries of 18 ministries as members.
  • Term of Refenerence of EGOS : Review implementation of the programme and prescribe norms for undertaking any subsequent amendments to it.
  • Network Planning Group: This group will assist the EGOS and consist of heads of such wings of respective infrastructure ministries.
  • Technical support unit: It will have experts from various infrastructure sectors, including aviation, maritime, rail, roads and highways, ports, etc, to oversee the complexities involved in the overall integration of networks.

Central Government notifies Indian Telegraph Right of Way (Amendment) Rules, 2021

  • The Department of Telecom (DoT)  has notified the Indian Telegraph Right of Way (Amendment) Rules, 2021 on October 21, 2021, by amending the Indian Telegraph Right of Way Rules, 2016.
  • The new rules have been introduced to ease the Right of Way (RoW) related permission and procedures for establishment and augmentation of Digital Communications Infrastructure across the country.
  • Amendments notified are as follows:
    • The one-time compensation for establishment of overground telegraph line has been fixed at maximum Rs 1000 per kilometre. 
    • No fee will be charged other than Administrative fee and Restoration charges for establishing, maintaining, working, repairing, transferring or shifting the underground and overground telegraph infrastructure.
    • Besides, Documentation for Right of Way (RoW) application for overground telegraph line has also been simplified.

Indian Navy launches Offshore Sailing Regatta from Kochi to Goa

  • The Indian Navy has organised an Offshore Sailing Regatta from Kochi to Goa, as a part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, and above all, boost the spirit of adventure and ocean sailing among the Navy Personnel.
  • The event organised under the aegis of the Indian Naval Sailing Association (INSA) will see the participation of six Indian naval sailing vessels (INSVs), comprising of four 40 footers ad two 56 footers.
  • The six INSVs include:
    • 56 footer – Mhadei and Tarini
    • 40 footer – Bulbul, Neelkhanth, Kadalpura and Hariyal
  • The race will begin on October 24, 2021, for a tentative duration of five days.
  • The vessels will cover a total distance of 360 nautical miles between the starting point at the Naval base in Kochi to Goa.

UIDAI announces first-ever Aadhaar Hackathon 2021

  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has organised Aadhaar Hackathon 2021 for young innovators from October 28 to 31, 2021.
  • The hackathon consists of two broad themes:
    • Enrollment and Update (innovative solutions to cover challenges being faced by the common man while updating their address)
    • Identity and Authentication (innovative solutions to prove Identity without sharing the Aadhaar number and other demographic information)
  • Registration for Aadhaar Hackathon 2021 can be accessed at – https://hackathon.uidai.gov.in/.

Tamil drama film Koozhangal is India’s official entry for Oscars 2022

  • The Tamil-language drama film Koozhangal (internationally translated as Pebbles), has been selected as India’s official entry for the 94th Academy Awards (Oscars 2022).
  • The film has been directed by filmmaker Vinothraj PS and produced by Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara.
  • The 94th Academy Awards are scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, on March 27, 2022.

  • German sportswear brand Adidas has roped in Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone as global ambassador for women sports.
  • Deepika will represent adidas women globally.
  • She joins the elite list of female brand ambassadors of Adidas in India, including Mirabai Chanu; boxers Lovlina Borgohain, Nikhat Zareen and Simranjeet Kaur; sprinter Hima Das, and squash player Dipika Pallikal.

Election Commission of India launches Garuda App for Digital Mapping of Polling Booths

  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched the Garuda app for digital mapping of all polling stations, to ensure faster, smarter, transparent and timely completion of election work.
  • Through the Garuda app, Booth Level Officers (BLO) will upload photos and location information of the polling stations, along with data like latitude and longitude of the centre, from their registered mobile numbers..
  • The app will also help in reducing the paperwork.

  • “Writing for My Life”, an anthology of author Ruskin Bond has been released. It contains some of the most exemplary stories, essays, poems and memories of Ruskin Bond.
  • What is an anthology: an anthology is a collection of literary works chosen by the compiler; it may be a collection of plays, poems, short stories, songs or excerpts by different authors.
  • This anthology has been released 25 years after the first anthology of Bond titled, “The Best of Ruskin Bond”.
  • The selections for this anthology have been made by Bond himself and his editor Premanka Goswami. Ruskin Bond is an Indian author of British descentHis first novel is The Room on the Roof.

China launches satellite ‘Shijian-21’

  • China successfully launched a new satellite named Shijian-21 on October 24, 2021.
  • The satellite will be used to test and verify space debris mitigation technologies.
  • Shijian-21 was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in southwest China’s Sichuan Province on a Long March-3B carrier rocket.

South Korea flight tests first homegrown space rocket “Nuri”

  • South Korea recently launched its first indigenously developed rocket, known as “Korean Satellite Launch Vehicle II” or “Nuri”.
  • The launch vehicle lifted off from the Naro Space Center, in Goheung, built on an island nearly 300 miles (500 kilometers) south of Seoul.
  • Nuri rocket is 47.2 metres long and weighs 200 tones. The three-stage rocket is fitted with six liquid-fuelled engines. It has been built at an estimated cost of 2 trillion won (£1.23bn or $1.6bn).

  • The Victor Denmark Open 2021 badminton tournament was held at the Odense Sports Park in Odense, Denmark, from 19 to 24 October 2021.
  • Given below is the list of winners of the tournament
    1. Men’s single – Viktor Axelsen (Denmark) beat Kento Momota (Japan)
    2. Women’s single – Akane Yamaguchi (Japan) beat An Se-young (South Korea)
    3. Men’s double – Takuro Hoki, and Yugo Kobayashi (Japan)
    4. Women’s double – Huang Dongping and Zheng Yu (China)
    5. Mixed double – Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino (Japan)

Nagaland to host 56th National Cross Country Championship in 2022

  • The 2022 South Asian Federation Cross Country Championships is scheduled to be held in Kohima, Nagaland on January 15, 2022.
  • Besides this, the 56th National Cross Country Championships will also be clubbed with the South Asian Federation Cross Country Championships. This will be the first-ever national athletics event hosted by Nagaland.
  • Top athletes from the eight south Asian countries will take part in the day-long international sports event.
  • The championship will involve running on different types of terrain including sprint over dirt, jog downhill and mount uphill.
