Manduadih Railway Station in Varanasi Renamed as Banaras Railway Station

  • The Northern Eastern Railway (NER) authorities have renamed the Manduadih Railway Station in Varanasi city, as Banaras Railway Station.
  • The newly painted signboards depicts Banaras written in Hindi, Sanskrit, English, and Urdu.
  • The code for the station with the new identity will be ‘BSBS’, with effect from 15 July 2021.
  • The renaming of Manduadih railway station was initiated by former minister of state for railway and the current lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha in February 2019.

Raksha Mantri launches AI-powered grievance management application for Central Government

  • Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh launched India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered grievance management application in New Delhi on July 15, 2021, to improve grievance redressal in the Central government.
  • The application has been developed by Ministry of Defence with the help of IIT-Kanpur.
  • The AI-powered application will automatically handle and analyse the complaints of the people and at the same time would reduce human intervention, thus saving time and bring more transparency in their disposal. 
  • The AI-based tool can understand the content of the complaint based on the contents therein.
  • It can identify repeat complaints or spam automatically.
  • Based on the meaning of the complaint, the app can categorise complaints of different categories even when key words normally used for such search are not present in the complaint.
  • It enables geographical analysis of complaints in a category including analysis of whether the complaint was adequately addressed or not by the concerned office.

Adani Group takes management control of Mumbai International Airport from GVK Group

  • The Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), a 100% subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, has taken over the management control of the world class Mumbai International Airport (MIAL), by both passenger and cargo traffic,  from the GVK Group.
  • With this, AAHL has become the largest airport infrastructure company in India.
  • Now AAHL accounts for a total of eight airports in its management and development portfolio, accounting for 25% of airport footfalls. Besides, AAHL will also control 33% of the country’s air cargo traffic.

China launches world’s first commercial onshore small reactor project ‘Linglong One’

  • China is constructing world’s first onshore commercial modular small reactor ‘Linglong One’ at the Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant in the Hainan Province.
  • The multipurpose small modular reactor (SMR) ‘Linglong One’, (also called the ACP100), is the first SMR to get green signal by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2016.
  • The ACP100 will have a generation capacity of 125,000 kilowatt hours and upon completion, the capacity can climb up to 1 billion kilowatt hours, and cater to more than 500,000 households in China.

Singapore Unveils One of World’s Biggest Solar Farms To Fight Climate Change

  • On July 14, 2021, Singapore unveiled one of the world’s largest floating solar panel farms, which is spread over an area equivalent to 45 football fields and has the capacity to produce enough electricity to power the island’s five water treatment plants.
  • The project is part of efforts by the country to increase its solar energy production four times by 2025 to help tackle climate change.
  • The 60 megawatt-peak floating solar system is built at Tengeh Reservoir by Sembcorp Floating Solar Singapore, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, in collaboration with Singapore Public Utilities Board.
  • The solar farm consists of 122,000 solar panels, on the 45-hectare (111.2 acres) site, making Singapore one of the few countries in the world to have a water treatment system fully powered by sustainable energy.

AIFF Nominates ‘Gokulam Kerala FC’ to represent India in AFC Women’s Club Championship

  • The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has nominated women’s team of ‘Gokulam Kerala FC’ to represent India in the AFC Women’s Club Championship 2020-21, to be held in October-November 2021..
  • The winners of the Hero Indian Women’s League competes in the AFC Club Championship, but since the 5th edition of the tournament has been postponed which was to be held in 2021, the national federation nominated the champions of the fourth edition, that is ‘Gokulam Kerala FC’.
  • The Kozhikode-based club is also the first Indian club whose both men’s and women’s teams are playing in the AFC tournament in the same season.

National Award-winning actress Surekha Sikri dies at 75

  • Three-time national award winning veteran television and film actress Surekha Sikri, has passed away following a cardiac arrest. She was 75.
  • Surekha Sikri was best known for her performances in television daily soap Balika Vadhu.
  • She was also credited for films like Tamas, Mammo, Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro, Zubeidaa, Badhaai Ho among others.
  • Sikri was last seen in Netflix’s anthology “Ghost Stories” (2020),directed by Zoya Akhtar.
  • Sikri won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her roles in Tamas (1988), Mammo (1995) and Badhaai Ho (2018).

Pulitzer Prize-winning Indian photojournalist Danish Siddiqui passes away

  • Pulitzer Prize-winning Indian photojournalist Danish Siddiqui, has passed away, after he was killed in a clash while reporting fight between Afghan troops and the Taliban in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province in Afghanistan on July 13, 2021.
  • He was in his early 40s.
  • Siddiqui was employed with international news agency Reuters.
  • Siddiqui was a recipient of the prestigious Pulitzer Prize with six others working as a photographer with Reuters news agency in 2018.

  • The World Day for International Justice, (also known as Day of International Criminal Justice or International Justice Day), is celebrated globally on July 17 to support and recognize the work of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
  • The day marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute on July 17, 1998, the treaty that created the International Criminal Court.
