National

Indian Railways’ First Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal commissioned in Asansol Division of Eastern Railway

  • The Indian Railways has commissioned the first ‘Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal’ (GCT) in Asansol Division of Eastern Railways, under the PM GATI-SHAKTI programme.
  • This private siding of Maithan Power Limited was commissioned by the Asansol division at Thaparnagar in Jharkahnd.
  • This is the first Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) commissioned in the Indian Railways network since the launch of the GCT policy in December 2021.
  • The commissioning of this terminal will enhance the earnings of Indian Railways by around Rs. 11 crores per month.
  • Indian Railways will set up around 500 multi-modal cargo terminals under the PM GATI-SHAKTI programme within 4-5 years, in line with PM Narendra Modi’s vision of “Gati Shakti” and the Railway Ministry’s Policy regarding GCT .

Labour Minister Bhupendra Yadav launches Book titled ‘Role of Labour in India’s Development’

  • Union Minister for Labour and Employment, Shri Bhupender Yadav released a book titled ‘Role of Labour in India’s Development’, on March 09, 2022 at New Delhi, as a part of the ‘Iconic Week’ celebration of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
  • The book has been published by the V V Giri National Labour Institute, Noida, under the Ministry of Labour of Government of India.
  • The Book contains 12 articles written by eminent academicians and practitioners on the contribution of labour in India’s development journey.

India emerges as largest importer of arms in 2017-21: SIPRI Report

  • The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) released its latest report on Trends in International Arms Transfer, 2021.
  • Largest Arms Importers in 2017-21: As per the report, India and Saudi Arabia emerged as the largest importers of arms between 2017-21. Both the two countries accounted for 11% of all global arms sales. The report placed India at the top of the list.
  • Largest Arms Exporters in 2017-21:USA, with 39% share, retained its standing as the world’s largest arms exporters during 2017-21.

Appointment

N Chandrasekaran appointed as chairman of Air India

  • N Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Sons, has been appointed as the chairman of Air India. 
  • In February 2022, N Chandrasekaran was reappointed as chairman of Tata Sons for a second term of five years.
  • Tata Sons will soon announce a new MD and CEO for Air India to replace Ilker Ayci who was to take charge next month but resigned in the wake of controversies regarding his appointment.

Ranjit Rath appointed as Chairman & MD of Oil India Ltd.

  • Ranjit Rath has been appointed as the next Chairman and Managing Director of Oil India Limited (OIL).
  • He will replace current chairman and managing director Sushil Chandra Mishra, who will superannuate on June 30, 2022.
  • Presently Rath is the chairman and managing director of Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd (MECL).

Lakshya Sen Clinches Silver Medal at German Open (Badminton) 2022

  • Indian Shuttler Lakshya Sen settled for silver after losing to Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand, 18-21, 15-21, in the men’s singles final at the German Open 2022.
  • German Open is an annual badminton tournament classified as BWF World Tour Super 300 event.

  • The day was initiated by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) to celebrate the beauty and importance of mathematics and its essential role in everyone’s life.
  • The 40th General Conference of UNESCO approved the Proclamation of March 14 as the International Day of Mathematics, on November 26, 2019.

  • The International Day of Action for Rivers is celebrated every year on 14th of March.
  • It was first marked in March 1997.
  • The year 2022 marks the 25th anniversary of the International Day of Action for Rivers.

Former Zambian President Rupiah Banda passes away at 85

  • Rupiah Banda, the former President of Zambia, has passed away after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 85.
  • Banda had served as the fourth president of Zambia from 2008 and 2011.
