National

Google unveils ‘India Ki Udaan’ to Celebrate 75 Years Of Independence

  • The Ministry of Culture has collaborated with Software giant Google as a part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ to capture the milestones India has achieved in its journey of 75 years since Independence.
  • As a part of this collaboration, Google has unveiled an online project named ‘India ki Udaan’ to celebrate country’s achievements.
  • The project is being executed by Google Arts & Culture under the theme “A celebration of the unwavering and undying spirit of India and its 75 years of Independence.”

Conference & Meetings

PM Modi Chairs 7th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi chaired the seventh meeting of the Niti Aayog Governing Council on August 07, 2022 in New Delhi.
  • This was the first in-person assembly of the Council since July 2019. The last two meetings were held through videoconferencing owing to covid.
  • The agenda of the meeting included:
    1. crop diversification and achieving self-sufficiency in oilseeds and pulses and agri-communities;
    2. implementation of the National Education Policy-school education;
    3. implementation of the National Education Policy-higher education;
    4. urban governance.
  • The meeting was attended by 23 Chief Ministers, 3 Lieutenant Governors and 2 Administrators and Union ministers.

ITU’s Regional Standardization Forum (RSF) for Asia and Oceania held in New Delhi

  • The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Regional Standardization Forum (RSF) for Asia and Oceania region was hosted by the Ministry of Communication, Government of India on 08 August 2022 in New Delhi, as a part of the celebrations of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. 
  • The theme of the Forum was “Regulatory and Policy aspects of Telecommunications/ICTs”
  • The Regional Standardization Forum was inaugurated by Shri Devusinh Chauhan, Minister of State for Communications.  
  • Over 250 delegates from 20 countries participated in Regional Standardization Forum. 
  • The Forum is being followed by four-day meeting of International Telecommunication Union-T Study Group 3 Regional Group Asia and Oceania (ITU-T SG3RG-AO) from August 9 to 12, 2022.

Defence

12th Defence Expo to be held in Gandhinagar from in October 2022

  • India’s flagship defence exhibition ‘DefExpo-2022’, is scheduled to be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat from October 18 to 22, 2022.
  • DefExpo 2022 is the 12th edition of prestigious biennial defence exhibition.
  • The five-day event will be comprising of three business days and two public days.
  • The theme 2022 DefExpo is ‘Path to Pride’.
  • The event will include live demonstrations at Sabarmati River Front to showcase the equipment and skill set of the armed forces, DPSUs (defence public sector units) and industry.
  • DefExpo 2022 will focus on the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to achieve self-reliance in defence and export of USD 5 billion by 2025.
  • It must be remembered that DefExpo 2022 was earlier proposed to be held between March 10 and 14, 2022 in Gandhinagar, however, the defence ministry had postponed the event due to logistics problem being face by participants.

In-a-first, US Naval Ship Charles Drew arrives in Indian shipyard for repair

  • A US Navy Ship named USNS Charles Drew arrived at L&T’s Katupalli Shipyard at Ennore, near Chennai, on August 07, 2022. for undertaking repairs and maintenance.
  • It is for the first time that a US Navy ship has docked in an Indian shipyard for repairs and allied services. The development will mark a new strategic dimension to the burgeoning Indo-US military partnership.
  • The USNS Charles Drew will be at Kattupalli shipyard for 11 days to undergo repairs in various areas.
  • This is the third Indo-Pacific base being used by US Navy for maintenance and ship repair. The other two are located at Diego Garcia and Singapore.

Indo-US Joint Special Forces Exercise begins in Bakloh, Himachal Pradesh

  • The India-US Joint Special Forces exercise “Ex Vajra Prahar 2022”, began on August 08, 2022 at the Special Forces Training School in Bakloh, Himachal Pradesh.
  • Ex Vajra Prahar 2022 is the 13th edition of the annual exercise.
  • The main objective of this joint exercise is to share the best practices and experiences in areas such as joint mission planning and operational tactics.
  • The Indian Army contingent is represented by drawing Special Forces personnel under the aegis of SFTS, while the US contingent is represented by personnel from the 1st Special Forces Group (SFG) and Special Tactics Squadron (STS) of the US Special Forces.

RBI imposes monetary penalty of Rs 2.33 crore on Hyderabad-based Spandana Sphoorty Financial Limited

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 2.33 crore on Spandana Sphoorty Financial Limited, based in Hyderabad.
  • The penalty has been imposed due to non-compliance with certain provisions of the ‘Non-Banking Financial Company – Systemically Important Non-Deposit taking Company and Deposit taking Company (Reserve Bank) Directions, 2016”.
  • RBI has imposed the fine in exercise of its powers under the provisions of clause (b) of sub-section (1) of section 58 G read with clause (aa) of sub-section (5) of section 58 B of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.

Aarya Walvekar crowned Miss India USA for 2022

  • An Indian-American teenager Aarya Walvekar from Virginia, has been crowned Miss India USA 2022.
  • Walvekar represented Washington DC at the contest.
  • The Miss India USA 2022 is the 40th anniversary of the annual beauty pageant.
  • It is also the longest-running Indian Pageant outside of India.
  • The event was started by New York-based Indian- Americans Dharmatma and Neelam Saran under the banner of Worldwide Pageants.

India’s medal tally counts 61 medals including 22 Gold on final day at 2022 CWG

  • Indian contingents finished the 2022 Commonwealth Games at fourth position with a total of 61 medals including 22Gold; 16Silver; 23Bronze.
  • From India, overall 210 athletes took part comprising 106 men and 104 women, competing in 16 sports.
  • Australia finished the Games with highest number of medals, winning 178 medals, [67G; 57S; 54B].
  • Host nation England finished second with 176 medals [57G; 66S; 53B].
  • Canada was third with 92 medals [26G; 32S; 34B]
  • Indian Hockey player Manpreet Singh and badminton athlete P. V. Sindhu were the flagbearers at the opening ceremony.
  • Indian Boxer Nikhat Zareen and table tennis legend Achanta Sharath Kamal served as the flagbearers at the closing ceremony.

Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya and England’s Emma Lamb declared ICC Player of the Month for July 2022

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has chosen Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya ICC Men’s Player of the Month for July 2022.
  • Meanwhile England’s emerging all-rounder Emma Lamb as been declared ICC Women’s Player of the Month for July 2022.
  • The 30-year-old Jayasuriya made his Test debut against Australia in Galle in July 2022, during which he picked up 12 wickets to take his team to a series-levelling victory.
  • Lamb was chosen due to her extraordinary performance in three-match ODI series against South Africa, where she secured 234 runs in three matches, including a match-winning century (102 off 97 balls) followed by two half-centuries (67 off 65 balls and 65 off 66 balls) in the next two games.. 

Chennai’s V Pranav is the 75th Chess Grandmaster of India

  • As India is going to celebrate its 75th Independence Day, a 16-year-old Chennai boy, V. Pranav, has emerged as the 75th Chess Grandmaster of India.
  • V Pranav achieved the feat of securing his third and final GM norm on August 07, 2022 in Romania during the Limpedea Open.
  • He made his first GM norm from the Serbian Open in 2021 and the second from Vezerkepzo tournament at Budapest in June 2022.

Important Days

Nagasaki Day: 09 August

  • In 2022 the world is observing the 77th anniversary of the Nagasaki bombing that took place on August 9, 1945.
  • United States dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan and was codenamed “Fat Man” due to the design of the bomb as it had a wide, round shape.
  • The atomic bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima (August 6) forced Japan to surrender, thus ending World War II.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples: 09 August

  • The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (World Tribal Day) is observed on 9 August annually to protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population and recognize the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make to improve world issues such as environmental protection.
  • The theme for 2022 is The Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge.”
  • The day was recognised by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 1994.
  • The date to marks the day of the inaugural session of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations at the United Nations in 1982.

World Biofuel Day: 10 August

  • The International Biofuel Day (World Biofuel Day) is observed every year on August 10 to raise awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels and highlight the various efforts made by Government in the biofuel sector.
  • The Day is being observed by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas since 2015.

World Lion Day: 10 August

  • World Lion Day is observed globally on August 10 every year with the following objective:
    • raise awareness of lion and the issues that the species faces in the wild.
    • find ways to protect the big cat’s natural environment
    • educate people who live near wild cats on the dangers and how to protect themselves
  • The World Lion Day was launched in 2013.
  • The big cat is listed as an endangered species in the IUCN Red List.
