2022 Commonwealth Games Overview

  • The 2022 Commonwealth Games took place in Birmingham, England from 28 July to 08 August 2022.
  • England hosted the Commonwealth Games for the third time, after London 1934 and Manchester 2002.
  • It was the largest Commonwealth Games ever held, with 72 participating nations.
  • Mascot : The official mascot for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games was Perry, a multi-coloured bull. Perry was designed by 10-year-old Emma Lou from Bolton.
  • Top Nation: Australia finished the Games with highest number of medals, winning 178 medals, [67G; 57S; 54B].
  • Host nation England finished second with 176 medals [57G; 66S; 53B].
  • Canada was third with 92 medals [26G; 32S; 34B]
  • India at 2022 CWG: Indian contingents finished the 2022 Commonwealth Games at fourth position with a total of 61 medals [22G; 16S; 23B].
  • 2022 marked the 18th appearance of India at the Commonwealth Games.
  • From India, overall 210 athletes took part comprising 106 men and 104 women, competing in 16 sports.
  • The sports in which Indian contingents did not participate included 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, netball and rugby sevens.
  • Flagbearers from India:
    • Indian Hockey player Manpreet Singh and badminton athlete P. V. Sindhu were the flagbearers at the opening ceremony.
    • Indian Boxer Nikhat Zareen and table tennis legend Achanta Sharath Kamal served as the flagbearers at the closing ceremony.
  • 14-year-old Squash player Anahat Singh was the youngest Indian athlete to compete at the Commonwealth Games.
  • 45-year old Lawn Bowls player Sunil Bahadur was the oldest player in the contingent.
  • Sanket Sargar won India’s first medal of the Games which was a silver in weightlifting.
  • Weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won India’s first gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
