India’s first heart failure biobank unveiled in Thiruvananthapuram

  • India’s first Heart Failure Biobank has been set up at the National Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in HF (CARE-HF) at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.
  • The HF (Heart Failure) Biobank will store the biospecimens such as blood, serum, tissue samples obtained during open-heart surgery and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and genomic DNA collected from heart failure patient for research purpose.
  • It would also provide guidance for future therapies and technologies to improve the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of heart patients significantly.

DRDO Organises Virtual IEEE International Conference on Range Technology

  • Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, inaugurated the second Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Conference on Range Technology (ICORT-2021) on August 05, 2021 via videoconferencing.
  • The conference was organised by Integrated Test Range (ITR) Chandipur, a laboratory of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • The speakers from across the globe participated in the event to present their technological achievements in multiple subjects related to Test and Evaluation of defence systems.

  • The SBI General Insurance has partnered with the Manipal Business Solutions, to tap customers of fintech platform SahiPay, in a bid to increase its non-life insurance penetration in the rural market.
  • Manipal Business Solutions is the promoter of SahiPay, which provides digital and financial services in the semi-urban and rural parts of the country, to different business entities.
  • Under this partnership, SBI General will provide a range of non-life insurance solutions to SahiPay customers.
  • This initiative is part of the strategy of SBI General in strengthening its distribution footprints in the country and becoming the most trusted general insurer for India.

Dhriti Banerjee appointed first woman director of Zoological Survey of India

  • Dr. Dhriti Banerjee has been appointed as the first woman Director of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI).
  • This is for the first time in the 105 years history of ZSI that a women director has been appointed.
  • The 51-year-old Dr Banerjee has had an illustrious career as a scientist at ZSI, conducting research in taxonomy, zoogeography, morphology and molecular systematics.
  • The ZSI was started in July 1916, under the ministry of environment and forests and climate change. It is headquartered at Kolkata and has 16 regional centres.

Bajrang Punia clinches men’s 65 kg wrestling bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics

  • Ace India wrestler Bajrang Punia beat Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan, 8-0, to win the bronze medal in men’s freestyle 65kg wrestling at Tokyo Olympics on August 07, 2021.
  • This is the sixth medal for India at the ongoing Games, and the fourth bronze for the nation.

Neeraj Chopra Wins Gold in Men’s Javelin Throw at Tokyo Olympics 2020

  • India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won a historic gold medal in men’s javelin throw at the Tokyo 2020 Games on August 07, 2021.
  • Neeraj Chopra threw 87.58m in his second attempt to claim the yellow medal.
  • This is the first gold medal for India at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2020 and the 7th medal overall.
  • Chopra is the first athlete of independent India to win a gold medal in the track and field discipline.
  • He is also the only second Indian to win gold in Olympic, after Abhinav Bindra, who claimed gold in the 10-meter air rifle event at the 2008 Summer Olympics at Beijing.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award rechristened as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award

  • The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honour of India, has been renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, as per an announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 06, 2021.
  • The Khel Ratna award was instituted in 1991-1992 and comes with a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh. The first recepient was Chess legend Viswanathan Anand. 
  • Allahabad-born Major Dhyan Chand was a legendary field hockey player, who played international hockey from 1926 to 1949, scoring over 400 goals in his career.
  • The ultimate hockey hero was famously known as ‘The Wizard’.
  • Dhyan Chand was part of the Olympic team that won gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936.

  • The Tribal Co-operative Marketing Federation of India (TRIFED) celebrated its 34th Foundation Day on August 06, 2021.
  • TRIFED is a national level cooperative body under the administrative control of Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
  • It was established on August 6, 1987, under the Multi-state co-operative societies act 1984.
  • TRIFED aims to drive tribal development through marketing support for tribal products, both, handicrafts and Non Timber Forest Produce (NTFP).

National Handloom Day: 7 August

  • The National Handloom Day is observed annually on 7 August in India, to honour the handloom weavers in the country and highlight the contribution of handloom industry towards the socioeconomic development of the country and increase income of the weavers.
  • 2021 marks the 7th National Handloom Day.
  • The Union government officially declared August 7 as NHD in July 2015, to recognize the contribution of India’s handloom weavers, from Kanjivaram to Pashmina.
  • It was on this day in 1905, that the Swadeshi Movement was launched in the Calcutta Town hall to protest against partition of Bengal by the British Government.

Quit India Day: 8 August

  • Every year, the Quit India Day (or August Kranti Day) is observed on 8 August to commemorate the anniversary of Quit India Movement, launched by Father of Nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, on 8 August 1942 at the All-India Congress Committee session in Bombay.
  • In 2021, we are celebrating the 79th anniversary of Quit India Day.
  • Quit India Movement also known as Bharat Chodo Andolan and August Kranti Movement was a ‘do or die’ call to the people of India initiated by Gandhiji to demand an end to the British rule in India.

India’s Olympian footballer SS ‘Babu’ Narayan passes away at 86

  • Former Indian footballer Subramaniam Sankar Narayan, who played at the 1956 and 1960 Olympics, has passed away. He was 86.
  • He was famously known as S. S. “Babu” Narayan and had represented India as a goalkeeper at the 1956 (Melbourne) and 1960 (Rome) Olympic Games.
  • The two-time Olympian was also a part of Maharashtra’s Santosh Trophy-winning campaign in 1964.
