First consignment of GI tagged sweet dish Mihidana from West Bengal exported to Bahrain

  • The first consignment of Geographical Indication (GI) tagged sweet dish Mihidana, from Bardhaman, West Bengal has been exported to the Kingdom of Bahrain.
  • This initiative is part of the effort to promote indigenous & Geographical Identification (GI) tagged products of India globally.
  • The product was exported by APEDA registered M/S DM Enterprises, Kolkata.
  • West Bengal’s Bardhaman got the GI tag for the Mihidana sweetmeats in 2017.
  • A GI tag is a sign denoting a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.

  • The theme of the three-day event is “New Urban India”. It will culminate on October 07, 2021.
  • The Conference-cum-Expo is organised by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

Centre launches ICMR’s drone-based vaccine delivery model ‘i-Drone’ in North East

  • The Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, launched ‘i-Drone’, a drone-based vaccine delivery model for Northeast states, on October 04, 2021.
  • The i-Drone has been developed by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
  • i-Drone stands for ICMR’s Drone Response and Outreach in North East
  • The main objective of this tool is to facilitate vaccine delivery to tough and hard-to-reach terrains of India, and to improve healthcare accessibility to the last mile.
  • Currently, the drone-based delivery project is being implemented in Manipur, Nagaland, and union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Island.
  • ICMR collaborated with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur for conducting initial study to test the capacity of drones to carry and transfer vaccines safely.

40th-India International Trade Fair 2021 will be held at Pragati Maidan from November 14 to 27

  • The 40th edition of the India International Trade Fair (IITF) is scheduled to take place at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from November 14 to 27, 2021.
  • The theme of the 14-day IITF in 2021 is ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
  • The mega event is organised by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) annually.
  • The IITF was held for the first time in 1979.

India joins Seychelles’ Tax Inspectors Without Borders (TIWB) programme

  • The Tax Inspectors Without Borders (TIWB) has launched its programme in Seychelles on October 04, 2021.
  • India has been chosen as the Partner Administration for this programme. The country will be providing its Tax Expert in support of the initiative.
  • TIWB is a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), since its launch in 2015.
  • This is the sixth TIWB programme in which India has supported by providing Tax Expert.

5th India-Japan Bilateral Maritime Exercise JIMEX-21 

  • The fifth edition of India – Japan Maritime Bilateral Exercise JIMEX will be held in Arabian Sea from 06 to 08 October 2021.
  • JIMEX series of exercises between the Indian Navy (IN) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) are being held since 2012.
  • JIMEX-21 aims to develop common understanding of operational procedures and enhance inter-operability through conduct of a multitude of advanced exercises, across the entire spectrum of maritime operations. It will further  enhance the cooperation and mutual confidence between the two navies.
  • The Indian Navy will be represented by indigenously built Guided Missile Stealth Destroyer Kochi and Guided Missile Frigate Teg, P8I Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft, integral helicopters and MiG 29K fighter aircraft

Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi wins Nobel Prize in Physics 2021

  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics on October 05, 2021.
  • Three Laureates shares 2021 award for groundbreaking contributions and studies of chaotic and apparently random phenomena.
  • While one half of the award has been given jointly to US-based Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann of Germany “for the physical modelling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming”
  • The other half of the award has been conferred to Giorgio Parisi from Italy “for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.”
  • Prize amount: 10 million Swedish kronor. One half will go jointly to Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann and the other half to Giorgio Parisi

  • The Union Minister of Defence Shri Rajnath Singh gave away the awards to the winners of ‘Dare to Dream 2.0’ Contest of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) in New Delhi on October 04, 2021.
  • 40 winners, which included 22 in Individual category and 18 in Startup category have been felicitated with the award.
  • Meanwhile Shri Rajnath Singh also launched ‘Dare to Dream 3.0’ contest.
  • Dare to Dream is a pan-India contest by DRDO to promote Indian academicians, individuals, innovators and startups and provide a platform for the young ignited minds in the country, to develop emerging defence and aerospace technologies/systems.
  • The winners gets technical and financial support by DRDO for realisation of their ideas under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme.
  • Besides this, the minister also gave away DRDO Young Scientists awards for the year 2019.
  • The award were conferred upon sixteen DRDO scientists, under the age of 35 years, for their outstanding contribution in areas of their expertise.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu confers Assam Government’s biennial Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Award for National Integration and National Contribution on 3 awardees

  • The Vice President of India Shri M Venkaiah Naidu presented the Assam Government’s ‘Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Award for National Integration and Contribution’ for the year 2021, on October 03, 2021 to three recipients.
  • The three awardees are:
    1. Members of Assam branch of Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust
    2. German based Assamese litterateur Dr. Nirod Kumar Barooah
    3. Members of Shillong Chamber Choir at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra
  • The biennial Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Award was instituted by the Government of Assam in 1993 in the memory of the first Chief Minister of Assam Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi.

BC Patnaik sworn in as new managing director of LIC

  • B C Patnaik has been appointed as the Managing Director of insurance giant Life Insurance Corporation (LIC).
  • He has been appointed in place of Mukesh Kumar Gupta, who completed his tenure on September 30, 2021.
  • Prior to this appointment, Patnaik served as secretary General at Council for Insurance Ombudsmen(CIO), Mumbai.

  • World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen has won the inaugural Meltwater Champions Chess Tour (MCCT), to claim the non-fungible token (NFT) trophy, and $1,00,000 in the finals on October 04, 2021.
  • The 10-month long online chess tournaments, was held on chess24.com from November 22, 2020 till October 4, 2021. The tournaments are not rated by FIDE.
  • The MCCT tour comprised of 10 total tournaments.
  • The 2021 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour was the most viewed online chess event in history of the game.
  • Magnus Carlsen is now considered as the undisputed best online chess player in the world.
