Implementing Agency: Rural Electrification Corporation Limited (REC) is the Nodal Agency for operationalization and implementation of the scheme.

The old scheme for rural electrification named Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) has been subsumed with Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY).

Target to achieve 100% rural electrification

The government had set a target of May 10, 2018. On April 28, 2018 the government announced that all of India’s 597,464 census villages have been electrified. Hence the government completed the electrification process before target.

When does the government considers a village electrified?

A village is considered to be ‘electrified’ by the government when:;

  • it has the basic electrical infrastructure and
  • atleast 10% of its households, as well as public places viz schools, hospitals are connected to the grid.

So this 100% electrification only means that in all these 597,464 census villages atleast 10% of the household (including schools, hospitals) have electric connections.

Whats Next?– To Provide electricity connection to all. For this Saubhagya scheme was launched with an objective to provide electricity to those households which remained un-electrified. The scheme will be discussed in next post.
