Complete List of Narendra Modi Cabinet 2019 Along with Their Portfolios

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his 57-member council of ministers were sworn in by President Ram Nath Kovind on May 30, 2019.
  • The Modi government allocated the portfolio to each of his new ministers on May 31, 2019.
  • The Union Cabinet for the 17th Lok Sabha includes 24 Cabinet Ministers, 9 Ministers of State with Independent Charge (IC) and 24 Ministers of State (MoS).
  • Nirmala Sitharaman is the first Indian female to be appointed as full-time Union Minister of Finance & Corporate Affairs.

PM Modi Approves Hike in Scholarship Rate Under NDF; Extends Scholarship to Martyred State Police Officials Ward

  • After assuming of office of the Prime Minister, the first decision taken by PM Modi on May 31, 2019 was changes in Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved an increase in the rates of scholarship in the ‘Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme’ under the National Defence Fund (NDF).
    • Rates of scholarship for boys increased from Rs. 2000 per month to Rs. 2500 per month.
    • Rates of scholarship for girls increased from Rs. 2250 per month to Rs. 3000 per month for girls.
    • Ambit of the Scholarship Scheme is extended to the wards of State Police officials who are/were martyred during terror/naxal attacks. T
    • Rate of scholarship for wards of state police officials will be 500 in a year.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs will be the nodal Ministry in this regard.

Modi Government Extends Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sammaan Yojana to All Farmers

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 31, 2019 has approved the extension of Prime Minister Kisan Sammaan Yojana to all farmers, benefiting around 14 crore 50 lakh farmers of the country.
  • Previously, this benefit was applicable to only those farmers having 2 hectacre land.
  • PM-Kisan scheme will provide Rs 6000 per year in three installments to the farmers.
  • The estimated annual expenditure of the revised scheme would be Rs. 87,217.50 crore in 2019-20. Earlier the estimated annual expenditure was of Rs. 75,000 crore.

Government Approves Farmers Pension Scheme ‘Pradhan Mantri Kisan Pension Yojana’

  • Indian Government, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a new scheme called Pradhan Mantri Kisan Pension Yojana on May 31, 2019.
  • It is a voluntary and contributory pension scheme to cover all small and marginal farmers across the country.
  • A similar scheme has also been approved for small shopkeepers, self-employed persons and retail traders with GST turnover of Rs 1.5 crore.

Salient Features of the scheme:

  • Minimum age to join the scheme- 18
  • Maximum age – 40
  • Upon attaining the age of 60, farmers will get a minimum fixed pension of Rs 3000 per month.
  • Initially, the scheme will cover 5 crore farmers in the first 3 years.
  • The central government will contribute an equal amount to the pension fund at the rate of the sum contributed by each age group of beneficiary.
  • In case of the death of the beneficiary, the spouse will get 50% of the amount.

Indian Economy to Grow at 7.1% for FY20 & 7.2% for FY21: FICCI

  • The Industry body FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) expects the median GDP of India to grow at 7.1% in 2019-20 in its economic outlook survey released on May 30, 2019.
  •  The GDP growth projection for the fiscal 2020-21 is 7.2 per cent.

RBI to Observe Financial Literacy Week 2019 from June 3-7

  • The Reserve Bank of India will observe the Financial Literacy Week 2019 from June 3-7, 2019.
  • The theme for 2019 is Farmers.
  • Financial Literacy Week is organised by RBI to promote awareness on key topics every year through a focused campaign.

Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2019-20

  • The Government of India, in consultation with the Reserve Bank of India, has decided to issue Sovereign Gold Bonds for 2019-20 starting from June 2019 to September 2019.
  • The Bonds will be sold every month between July and September only through:
    • Scheduled Commercial banks (except Small Finance Banks and Payment Banks),
    • Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited (SHCIL),
    • Designated post offices, and
    • Recognised stock exchanges viz., National Stock Exchange of India Limited and Bombay Stock Exchange Limited.
  • Denomination: multiple of 1 grams
  • Tenor: 8 years with exit option after 5th year to be exercised on the interest payment dates.
  • Minimum Size: 1 gram
  • Maximum Size: 4 KG for individual, 4 Kg for HUF and 20 Kg for trusts and similar entities

Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa Takes Over as Chairman COSC

  • The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa, has taken over as the Chairman, Chiefs of Staffs Committee (COSC).
  • He succeeds outgoing Chairman COSC Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of the Naval Staff,  whose tenure ends on May 31
  • The Chairman, COSC, is the highest position in the Indian armed forces and is responsible to oversee the tri-services matters of the armed forces.

Admiral Karambir Singh Assumes Charge as Chief of the Naval Staff

  • Admiral Karambir Singh took over as the 24th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) on May 31, 2019.
  • He is the first helicopter pilot from the Indian Navy to become the CNS.
  • He succeeds Admiral Sunil Lanba who retired on May 31, 2019 after a distinguished career spanning over four decades.

6 Indian-Origin Students Wins US National Spelling Bee

  • In a historic win, six Indian-origin students were among eight co-champions who jointly won the prestigious 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
  • It is the first time in the 94-year history of the contest that more than two co-champions have been named.
  • Of the total 562 participants, 50 reached the finals and 8 were named co-champions.
  • Each of the 8 winners will be awarded cash prize of 50,000 US Dollar.
  • Scripps National Spelling Bee is an annual spelling bee held in the United States to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.
  • The 8 co-winners include: Rishik Gandhasri, Saketh Sundar, Shruthika Padhy, Sohum Sukhatankar, Abhijay Kodali, Rohan Raja, Christopher Serrao and Erin Howard.

World No-Tobacco Day: May 31

  • The World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed on 31 May annually to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe.
  • The Day was created by the member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1987.
  •  The theme of 2019 WNTD is ‘Tobacco and Lung Health’.

India’s Only Orangutan Binny Passes Away at 41 in Odisha Zoological Park

  • The only surviving species of Orangutan in India named Binny passed away at the age of 41 at the Nandan Kanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on May 29, 2019.
  • Binny was undergoing treatment for old-age related complications. She was brought to Odisha in 2003 from Pune
