Narendra Modi Takes Oath as Prime Minister of India for Second Term

  • Following a landslide victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Narendra Modi took oath as the Prime Minister of India for the second consecutive term on May 30, 2019 in the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • Indian President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath to the 68-year-old Modi along with his Councils of Minister.
  • Total 58 Member of Parliament (MPs) including PM Modi took oath on the swearing in ceremony.

Jaganmohan Reddy Sworn in as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh

  • YSR Congress Party Leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy took oath as the new Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on May 30, 2019.
  • The 46-year-old Reddy is the second Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh post its bifurcation, after N Chandrababu Naidu.
  • Governor ESL Narasimhan administered the oath of office to Reddy at the IGMC Stadium in Vijayawada city.
  • The state council of ministers is likely to be constituted on June 7.
  • The YSR Congress bagged 151 of the 175 seats in the state Assembly

Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain Takes Over as Commander-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command

  • Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain has taken over as the new Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C), Eastern Naval Command (ENC) from Vice Admiral Karambir Singh on May 30, 2019.
  • The outgoing FOC-in-C, Vice Admiral Karambir Singh, will assume the charge as the 24th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) on 31 May 2019. 
  • He will succeed Admiral Sunil Lanba, post his retirement from service on 31 May 2019.

James Marape Takes Over as Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea

  • A former finance minister, James Marape has been sworn in as the 8th Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea by the National Parliament on 30 May 2019.
  • His appointment follows the resignation of Peter O’Neill upon having lost the support of the House after more than seven years in power.

RBI Constitutes Task Force on the Development of Secondary Market for Corporate Loans

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constituted a six member Task Force on the Development of Secondary Market for Corporate Loans to bring in place a well-developed secondary market for debt for transparent price discovery of the inherent riskiness of the debt being traded.
  • The committee will be chaired by Shri T. N. Manoharan, Chairman, Canara Bank.
  • The task force will review the existing state of the market for loan sale/transfer in India as well as the international experience in loan trading and shall submit its report by the end of August 2019.

RBI Constitutes Committee on the Development of Housing Finance Securitisation Market

  • The Reserve Bank of India has constituted a Committee on the Development of Housing Finance Securitisation Market. 
  • The six member committee will be chaired by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Senior Advisor, Bain & Company.
  • The basic purpose of constituting the committee is to come up with a suitable mechanism to make the mortage securitisation market available for diverse investor classes which otherwise is primarily dominated by direct assignments among a limited set of market participants.
  • The committee will review the existing state of mortgage securitisation in India and various issues constraining market development, and to develop the market further.
  • The Committee shall submit its report by the end of August 2019.

RBI Extends Relaxation on the Guidelines to NBFCs on Securitisation Transactions

  • The Reserve Bank of India has decided to extend the ‘Relaxation on the guidelines to NBFCs on securitisation transactions’ till December 31, 2019.
  • The “Relaxation on the guidelines to NBFCs on securitisation transactions” was issued on November 29, 2018 by RBI to be applicable till May 2019.

Relaxed Norms

  • RBI has relaxed the minimum holding period (MHP) requirement for non-banking finance companies (NBFC) in respect of loans with maturity of over five year. 
  • The lenders can now sell their loan pools or securitise them after holding them for six months on their books. (Earlier it was one year)
  • To avail the relaxed norms by NBFC, RBI has also prescribed the Minimum Retention Requirement (MRR) of 20% of the fresh eligible loan portfolio instead of the regular norm of 10%.

J&K Govt Unveils Healthcare Investment Policy-2019 to Promote Medical Tourism

  • The Jammu and Kashmir Government has unveiled Healthcare Investment Policy-2019 on May 29, 2019 to boost healthcare infrastructure in the state.
  • Under the Healthcare Investment Policy-2019 the state Government will promote and encourage the private parties and entrepreneurs for healthcare infrastructure in the state by providing subsidies and incentives.

Some Features of Healthcare Investment Policy-2019

  • 30% subsidy on capital investment for setting up of multi-speciality Hospitals, Super Specialty Hospitals, Medical Colleges, Nursing Colleges and Paramedical Colleges. 
  • Interest subsidy @ 5% per annum on term loan subject to a ceiling of Rs 15 lakh per year for a period of five years from the date of operationalization of the project.
  • Subsidized power tariff rates to Industries Sector.
  • 100 % subsidy on purchase and installation of DG sets with an upper ceiling of Rs 45 lakh.
  • One-time subsidy up to 25% of the cost incurred on imparting training to the Nurses and Paramedical staff

Playwright and Journalist Annie Zaidi wins Nine Dots Prize 2019

  • Indian playwright and journalist Annie Zaidi has been named for the 2019 Nine Dots Prize for her essay Bread, Cement, Cactus. The book will be published by Cambridge University Press in May 2020.
  • The 40-year-old Annie is Mumbai based Freelance writer.
  • The Nine Dots Prize is a global book prize for creative thinking that tackles contemporary societal issues. Entrants for the prize are asked to respond to a question in 3,000 words.
  • The winner then writes a short book expanding on their essay’s idea for which they receive $100,000 (Rs 69.83 lakh). The question this year was “Is there still no place like home?”

Wax Statue of Virat Kohli Unveiled At Lord’s Ahead Of World Cup 2019

  • The renowned wax museum Madame Tussauds, unveiled the wax statue of Indian captain Virat Kohli at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, London on May 29, 2019 to mark the launch of the ICC Men’s World Cup 2019.
  • The statue will be open for display at the museum in London from May 30, 2019 onwards until the end of the tournament on July 15, 2019.
  • Kohli’s statue is dressed in official Indian kit with the shoes and gloves donated by the player  himself.
  • The statue will stand alongside Usain Bolt, Sir Mo Farah and fellow Indian cricket star Sachin Tendulkar.

2019 ICC Cricket World Cup Begins; Sachin Tendulkar Makes Commentary Debut

  • The 12th edition of the Cricket World Cup, known as the ICC Cricket World Cup England & Wales 2019 began on 30 May 2019 and will continue upto 14 July 2019. The matches will be hosted by England and Wales.
  • The first match of the tournament will be played at The Oval while the final will be played at Lord’s.
  • The 2019 World Cup will feature 10 teams as compared to 14 teams in previous World Cups in 2011 and 2015.
  • The legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar will make his debut as a commentator in World Cup on May 30, 2019 between hosts England and South Africa at The Oval, London.
  • England and Wales is hosting the Cricket World Cup for the fifth time, following the 1975, 1979, 1983 and 1999 World Cups

Chelsea beat Arsenal 4-1 to win UEFA Europa League

  • English football club Chelsea beat Arsenal 4-1 to win the UEFA Europa League final on May 29, at the Olympic Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan.
  • The 2018–19 UEFA Europa League was the 48th season of Europe’s secondary club football tournament organised by UEFA, and the 10th season since it was renamed from the UEFA Cup to the UEFA Europa League.
  • With this win, Chelsea has earned the right to play against the winners of the 2018–19 UEFA Champions League in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup.

World Hunger Day: May 28

  • The World Hunger Day is observed on May 28 to raise awareness of chronic hunger and celebrate the achievements of millions of people who are already taking actions to end their own hunger.
  • It was launched by The Hunger Project in 2011 to inspire people all over the world to show their solidarity and support for the women, men and children that are ending their own hunger and poverty.
  • The theme for World Hunger Day 2019 is Sustainability.

International Everest Day: May 29

  • The International Everest Day is observed every year on May 29 in memory of the first summit of Mt. Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary (New Zealand) and Nepalese Tenzing Norgay Sherpa on May 29 in 1953.
  • 2019 marks the 66th Everest Day.

‘The Godfather’ Actor Carmine Caridi Passes Away

American television and film actor, Carmine Caridi, who is remembered for his role in “The Godfather” series, has passed away. He was 85.
