India signs Rs 200 Crore deal with Russia for ‘Strum Ataka’ anti-tank missiles

  • India has signed a deal with Russia for acquiring the ‘Strum Ataka’ anti-tank missiles. The deal is worth around Rs 200 Crore.
  • The deal has been signed under the emergency clause as a result of which the missile would be delivered within a time of 3 months of the signing of the contract.
  • The deal would give an added capability to the Mi-35 attack choppers to take out enemy tanks and other armoured elements.

India ranked 74th in terms of money parked in Swiss Bank; Top- UK

  • India has been ranked at 74th position in terms of money parked by its citizens and enterprises with Swiss bank as per the data released by Swiss National Bank (SNB). Last year India’s rank was 73rd.
  • The UK is on top. UK is followed by the US, West Indies, France and Hong Kong in the top five.

Airtel becomes India’s first telecom company to start phasing out 3G network

  • Airtel has announced that it has shut down services on 3G network in Kolkata, making it India’s first operator to start phasing out 3G service in the country.
  • The company’s mobile broadband services in the telecom circle will now be available on high-speed 4G network. Now it is strengthening its 4G network by phasing out 3G technology in the country.

ISA’s First Joint Security Exercise ‘ISALEX19’ Begins in Abu Dhabi

  • The first edition of the joint security exercise of International Security Alliance (ISA) named ISALEX19 kicked off in Abu Dhabi, UAE on June 30, 2019 to test the readiness of the different teams and to evaluate the tools, strategies and procedures developed jointly between member countries.
  • The International Security Alliance was launched in Abu Dhabi in 2017 and comprises nine countries, the United Arab Emirates, France, the Italian Republic, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Kingdom of Morocco, the Kingdom of Spain, the Republic of Senegal, the Republic of Singapore, and the Slovak Republic.

In a first, Australian astronomers find precise location of cosmic radio waves

  • In a first, Australian scientists have determined the precise location of a powerful one-off burst of cosmic radio waves.
  • The discovery was made with Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.
  • A team of researchers made a high-resolution map showing that the burst originated in the outskirts of a Milky Way-sized galaxy about 3.6 billion light-years away.

Delhi Journalists Felicitated with Narad Samman Awards

  • The Indraprastha Vishwa Samvad Kendra (IVSK), the media arm of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), conferred the ‘Narad Samman 2019’ journalism awards on June 29, to journalists based in Delhi-NCR for their outstanding contribution to journalism in 2018
  • The award has been constituted in memory of the first-ever and the most eminent journalist-scholar of the universe, namely Narad Maharishi.
  • The 2019 Narad Samman was given in total nine categories.

Former Navy Chief Sushil Kumar Authors Book ‘A Prime Minister to Remember’

  • A Book titled ‘A Prime Minister to Remember: Memories of a Military Chief’ was released on June 28, 2019.
  • The book has been written by Admiral Sushil Kumar and speaks about the huge impact that the late Prime Minister Vajpayee had on the Armed Forces of India. 
  • Author Sushil Kumar was the Chief of the Indian Navy during the Kargil War and Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee when Operation Parakram was launched following the terror attack on the Indian Parliament.
  • The Admiral served with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee from 1998 to 2001 during challenging times of Kargil War, hijacking of IC 814 and Operation Parakram.

Karolina Pliskova defeats Kerber to win the Eastbourne Title

  • The Eastbourne International tennis title 2019 has ended. The winners are:
    • Women’s Single: Karolina Pliskova defeated Angelique Kerber
    • Men’s Single: Taylor Fritz defeated Sam Querrey

International Day of Parliamentarism: June 30

  • The United Nations International Day of Parliamentarism is held on June 30 to celebrate parliaments and the ways in which parliamentary systems of government improve the day-to-day lives of people the world over.
  • The 2019 event is the second edition of the celebration. 
  • It also marks the anniversary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the global organization of parliaments, that was established on June 30, 1889.

International Asteroid Day: June 30

  • The International Asteroid Day, also known as Asteroid Day is a United Nations proclaimed day observed on June 30 ever year globally to raise awareness about asteroids and what can be done to protect the Earth, its families, communities, and future generations from a catastrophic event.
  • The event marks the anniversary of the Siberian Tunguska event that took place on June 30, 1908, and was the most harmful known asteroid-related event on Earth in recent history.
