ICMR launches Mission SHAKTTI for health awareness

  • Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has launched Mission SHAKTTI (School based Health Awareness, Knowledge Test and Training Initiative) to create awareness among school children about health.
  • This has been done to commemorate 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Under this program ICMR scientists and officers are visiting schools for active interaction with the school kids to aware them regarding value for good health.
  • Mahatma Gandhi has been chosen as ‘health ambassador’ to create awareness among school children.

WB government observes Save Water Day on July 12

  • West Bengal Government has announced that it will observe July 12 every year as ‘Save Water Day’.
  • This year the West Bengal State Government carried out a march (padyatra) in the city to raise awareness on water conservation. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also participated in the event.
  • About three lakh water bodies have been dug so far by the state government under the water conservation programme of ‘Jal dharo Jal bharo’ (Collect water, store water).

Meghalaya becomes first state to have water policy

  • Meghalaya cabinet became the first state to approve a draft water policy to address water issues, conservation, and protection of water sources in the state. The state has become the first in India to have a water policy.
  • The policy intends to achieve sustainable development, management and use of water resources with community participation.

Anshula Kant appointed MD and CFO of World Bank

  • Anshula Kant of India has been appointed as managing director and chief financial officer of the World Bank. She is the managing director of the State Bank Of India.
  • In her role as Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer, Anshula Kant will be responsible for financial and risk management of the World Bank Group, reporting to the President i.e David Malpass.
  • Kant is a graduate in Economic Honours from Lady Shri Ram College for Women and a Post-Graduate in Economics from Delhi School of Economics.

France Passes Legislation to Impose 3 Percent Tax on Digital Giants

  • The French Parliament has passed a legislation dubbed as GAFA to impose a tax on major digital giants. GAFA tax is acronym for Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon.
  • With this, France has become the first major economy to impose a tax on digital giants.
  • The tech giants will be levied 3% percent tax on total annual revenues from services provided to French consumers.
  • GAFA targets digital companies with global annual sales of more than 750 million euros ($845.6 million) and sales in France of at least 25 million euros.

TIFR Scientists Develops ‘Black Gold’ That Can Boost Solar Panels and Solve Drinking Water Crisis

  • Indian scientists at the Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) have created a unique material from gold named as ‘black gold’ which can be used for applications ranging from harvesting solar energy to desalinating seawater.
  • The scientists did not add any other materials or chemicals to the precious metal, instead, they just rearranged size and gaps of gold nanoparticles to develop a new material that can absorb both light and carbon dioxide.
  • Since gold do not have these properties, the newly developed material, which is also black in color, has been named as ‘black gold’.

  • The world’s biggest diamond mine, Argyle Diamond Mine is being shuttered after almost four decades.
  • It is run by by Rio Tinto Group and is located in Western Australia. It will close its working by the end of 2020 due to exhausting of its supply of economically viable stones.
  • It is the largest diamond producer in the world by volume. Argyle is best known as the source of about 90% of the world’s prized pink diamonds

YouTube Set To Launch ‘Learning Playlists’ for Educational Videos

  • Google owned content sharing app YouTube has planned to introduce a new education feature called ‘Learning Playlists’ that will show educational videos on topics like math, science, music and language.
  • The main highlight of this initiative is that the playlist will be notably free from “recommended videos”, which will let viewers focus on their lessons without distractions.
  • The playlist will serve all groups of learners from beginners to advanced learners.

G. Sathiyan and Anthony Amalraj Pair Wins Bronze to Get India’s First Medal at World Tour Platinum Australian Open

  • In Table Tennis, the Indian pair of G. Sathiyan and Anthony Amalraj won the bronze medal in men’s double competition at the World Tour Platinum Australian Open.
  • This is the first ever medal for India in the Australian Open, which is a Platinum event.
  • The Indian duo lost 12-14, 9-11, 8-11 to top seed Korean pair of Jeoung Youngsik and Lee Sangsu in semifinals.

Popular cinematographer M J Radhakrishnan passed away

  • Well-known Malayalam cinematographer M J Radhakrishna passed away at the age of 61.
  • In a career that spanned over four decades, he worked in about 70 films. He won seven State Film Awards.
