FM Nirmala Sitharaman Launches IT initiatives ICEDASH, ATITHI for Improved Customs Clearance

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has unveiled two new IT Initiatives named ICEDASH and ATITHI on November 4, 2019 for improved monitoring and pace of customs clearance of imported goods and facilitating arriving international passengers.
  • ICEDASH is an Ease of Doing Business monitoring dashboard of the Indian Customs helping the public see the daily Customs clearance times of import cargo at various ports and airports.
  • The ATITHI app will facilitate hassle-free and faster clearance by Customs at the airports by electronic filing of Customs baggage and currency declarations and thus enhance the experience of international tourists and other visitors at the airports.

Assam govt signs Rs 400 cr pact with AFD to restore forest ecosystems

  • The French Development Agency (AFD) and the Government of Assam has signed a 50 million euro (Rs 400 crore) project agreement for supporting Phase II of Assam Project for Forest and Biodiversity Conservation (APFBC).
  • The total budget of the second phase is Rs 500 crore out of which the State government will contribute Rs 100 crore.
  • The project was launched in response to the threats posed by deforestation, poaching and over-dependence of local communities on forest resources. It aims to restore Assam’s forest ecosystems and preserve their biodiversity.

IIT Madras develops India’s “first indigenously” designed standing wheelchair named Arise

  • Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, has launched the country’s “first indigenously” designed standing wheelchair. It is named ‘Arise’.
  • It will enable a differently-abled person to shift from sitting to standing position. Arise has been launched by IIT, Madras in collaboration with Phoenix Medical Systems.
  • The standing wheelchair was launched in the presence of Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thawarchand Gehlot

IFFCO Launches India’s First Nanotechnology based products for on-field trials

  • Fertiliser major, the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), has introduced first of its kind ‘nano-technology’ based products – nano nitrogen, nano zinc and nano copper for onfield trials in an effort to cut usage of chemical fertilisers and boost farmers’ income.
  • The three products have been researched and developed at the IFFCO Nano Biotechnology Research Centre (NBRC), an advanced research and development centre based at Kalol Unit in Gujarat.
  • IFFCO NANO NITROGEN has been developed as an alternative to Urea.
  • IFFCO NANO ZINC is developed as an alternative to the currently used Zinc fertilisers.
  • IFFCO NANO COPPER will provide both nutrition and protection to the plant and boosts the plants immunity against harmful pathogens.

IPS officer Aditya Mishra appointed chairman of Land Ports Authority of India

  • Senior IPS officer Aditya Mishra has been appointed as the chairman of the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) for a period of five years from the date of assumption of the charge.
  • He is a 1989 batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre.

US-Bangladesh Navy exercise CARAT-2019 begins in Bangladesh

  • The US Navy exercise that it conducts with various other navies named ‘Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT)- 2019’ has started with Bangladesh Navy in Chattogram, Bangladesh from 4 to 7 November, 2019.
  • CARAT is a series of annual bilateral military exercises conducted by the United States Pacific Fleet with several member nations of ASEAN in Southeast Asia.
  • The exercise provides an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the operational activities of the Navies of two countries.

Reserve Bank announces the opening of first cohort under the Regulatory Sandbox; Theme- ‘Retail Payments’

  • The Reserve Bank of India has announced the opening of first cohort under the Regulatory Sandbox (RS) with ‘Retail Payments’, as its theme.
  • What is Regulatory Sandbox (RS): The RS allows the regulator, the innovators, the financial service providers (as potential deployers of the technology) and the customers (as final users) to conduct field tests to collect evidence on the benefits and risks of new financial innovations, while carefully monitoring and containing their risks.
  • The innovative products/services that will be considered by RBI for inclusion under this ‘Retail Payments’ based RS is:
    • Mobile payments including feature phone-based payment services
    • Offline payment solutions
    • Contactless payments

LIC allows revival of lapsed policy of over 2 years

  • Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has allowed policyholders to revive their policies that have lapsed for more than two years.
  • Before: Earlier, after the IRDA Product Regulation 2013, which came into effect on January 1, 2014, the revival period was restricted to two consecutive years from the date of the first unpaid premium.
  • Now: The LIC policyholders who bought their policies after January 1, 2014 could revive their,
    • Non-linked policies within five years of the first unpaid premium.
    • Unit-linked policies within three years of the first unpaid premium.

French Resistance member Yvette Lundy who survived Nazi camps Passes Away at 103

  • Yvette Lundy, a well-known member of the French Resistance during World War II and a Nazi concentration camp survivor passed away. She was 103.
  • She supplied fake documents to Jewish families and escaped prisoners of war during the Nazi occupation of France.
  • In 2017, she was made a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour, one of the highest civilian decorations in France.

N.V. Balasubramanian Retired Judge of Madras High Court Passes Away

  • Justice N.V. Balasubramanian, retired Judge of Madras High Court has passed away.
  • He served as the Madras High Court judge from 1996 – 2007.

World Tsunami Awareness Day: November 5

  • The World Tsunami Awareness Day was designated on November 5 by the UN General Assembly in December 2015.
  • The day aims to spread awareness in areas such as tsunami early warning, public action and building back better after a disaster to reduce future impacts.
  • It was on December 26, 2004 that a devastating Tsunami in the Indian ocean created havoc in 14 countries, killing over 230,000 people.
