Overview of PM Modi’s Two Days Visit to Gujarat

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on two day visit to Gujarat on 4-5 March 2019 to inaugurate and lay foundation stones of several development projects.
  • During his visit, PM visited Jamnagar, Jaspur and Ahmedabad on march 4 while he was in Adalaj and Vastral on March 5.
  • Some of the projects launched includes:
    • Inauguration of the first phase of Ahmedabad Metro Service at Vastral Gam Metro Station and foundation stone for the second phase of the Ahmedabad Metro.
    • Launched the Pradhan Mantri Shram-Yogi Maandhan Yojana (PM-SYM) and distributed PM-SYM Pension Cards to select beneficiaries.
    • Inauguration of India’s first indigenously developed One Nation, One Card Model for transport mobility. It is Common Mobility Card of Ahmedabad Metro

PM Modi launches NCMC, India’s first indigenously developed payment platform for transport

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched  One Nation, One Card for transport mobility at a function in Ahmedabad on March 04, 2019. 
  • The One Nation One Card model aims for payments across all segments including metro, bus, suburban railways, toll, parking, smart city and retail across the country using this single card.
  • This payment eco-system is India’s First Indigenously Developed Payment system for transport. It has three parts;
    • First is the Card: National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) is the first of its kind in India. Developed by NPCI in collaboration with CDAC.
    • Second is the Fare Collection Software: SWEEKAR – Swachalit Kiraya: Automatic Fare Collection System
    • The third is the SWAGAT (Swachalit Gate). Developed by BEL. This is the first gate and the reader which has been manufactured by an Indian company.
  • The ministry responsible for this development is the Ministry of Housing &  Urban Affairs.

Rajnath Singh Launches Smart Fencing Project ‘BOLD-QIT’ on Indo-Bangladesh border

  • The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the project BOLD-QIT (Border Electronically Dominated QRT Interception Technique) on March 5, 2019 on 61 km Indo- Bangladesh border in Dhubri district of Assam.
  • BOLD-QIT is a project under Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS).
  • The project makes use of technological solutions like sensors for border guarding as it was not feasible to construct border fencing physically along riverine border.
  • The CIBMS project aims to help BSF in detecting and controlling the cross border crimes like illegal infiltration, smuggling of contraband goods, human trafficking and cross border terrorism etc. 

Mahesh Sharma Inaugurates ‘Azaadi Ke Diwane’ Museum at Red Fort

  • The ‘Azaadi ke Diwane’ museum was inaugurated by the Minister of State for Culture (Independent charge) and Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Mahesh Sharma at Red Fort Complex, Delhi on March 4, 2019.
  • This museum has been created by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to pays homage to all the unsung heroes of freedom struggle of the nation, who would have otherwise been merged away in forgetfulness.
  • The ‘Azaadi ke Diwane’ museum is fifth in the series of recently inaugurated museums in the Red Fort Complex.

Gurugram most polluted city in Global Air Pollution 2018 report

  • Gurugram has been ranked as the most polluted city in the world in 2018 as per the IQAir AirVisual 2018 World Air Quality Report launched by Greenpeace.
  • Out of top 20 cities in terms of pollution, 15 are from India. Ghaziabad has been ranked second.

India to collaborate with four nations to protect Asian rhinos

  • The five rhino range nations that include India, Bhutan, Nepal, Indonesia and Malaysia have signed ‘The New Delhi Declaration on Asian Rhinos 2019’ for the conservation and protection of Asian Rhinos.
  • The declaration was signed at the Second Asian Rhino Range Countries meeting held in New Delhi.

Mumbai Monorail, India’s First Monorail Network now fully operational

  • India’s first monorail has now become fully operational in Mumbai. Mumbai Monorail is India’s first monorail system.
  • It is being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The entire 19.54 kilometre route has now become operational.
  • What is Monorail?– It is a system in which trains run on single track instead of two track.

ISRO Launches Young Scientist Programme (YUVIKA) to Train Students in Space Science

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched a special programme called “Young Scientist Programme” also dubbed as YUva VIgyani KAryakram (युविका) to provide basic knowledge regarding space activities to school children.
  • Students who have finished 8th standard and currently studying in 9th standard will be eligible for the programme.

World Bank to provide India $250 mn for women led businesses in rural areas

  • The World Bank will provide a $250-million loan to India for the National Rural Economic Transformation Project (NRETP) to help women in rural households develop viable enterprises for farm and non-farm products.
  • NRETP is an additional financing to the $500-million National Rural Livelihoods Project (NRLP) approved by the World Bank in July 2011.
  • The $250 million loan has a 5-year grace period, and a final maturity of 20 years.

India Signs USD 25.2 Million Loan Agreement with the World Bank for Chhattisgarh Public Financial Management and Accountability Program

  • The World Bank and the Government of India has signed a USD 25.2 Million Loan Agreement on March 5, 2019 to support Chhattisgarh Public Financial Management and Accountability Program.
  • The programs is the First Bank-Financed State-Level Project in Chhattisgarh to support the State’s Reforms in Expenditure Management, covering issues like Expenditure Planning, Investment Management, Budget Execution, Public Procurement and Accountability.

India – World Bank Signs USD 96 Million Loan Agreement for Uttarakhand Disaster Recovery Project

  • The World Bank has signed USD 96 Million Loan Agreement with the Government of India and Government of Uttarakhand (GoUK) on March 5, 2019.
  • The agreement aims to provide additional funds to the state under the Uttarakhand Disaster Recovery Project.
  • The World Bank has been supporting the Uttarakhand Government since 2014 to restore housing and rural connectivity and build resilience of communities, since the floods of 2013 to strengthen its capacity for Disaster Risk Management.

India-Oman Joint Military Exercise Al Nagah III to Begin on 12 March 2019

  • The third edition of the bilateral joint exercise between India and Oman, Exercise Al Nagah III, will take place from 12 to 25 March 2019 at Jabel Al Akhdar Mountains in Oman.
  • Exercise Al Nagah III is being held to exchange expertise and experience in tactics, weapon handling and firing to enhance interoperability in counterterrorist operations in semi urban mountainous terrain.

US, South Korea to end military exercise “Foal Eagle 2019” and “Key Resolve”

  • The US and South Korea have announced that they have ended their military exercises “Foal Eagle” and “Key Resolve”.
  • “Foal Eagle” was a combined field training exercise (FTX) between US and Republic of Korea Armed Forces (Armed forces of South Korea).
  • “Key Resolve” was a computer-simulated war game conducted by military commanders which usually begins in March and runs for about 10 days.
  • The US and South Korea have started a new military exercise named Dong Maeng, or “alliance,”. It will run from March 4-12.

Anil Kumble Takes Charge as ICC Cricket Committee Chairman for Third Consecutive Term

  • Former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble has been reappointed as the Chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee for the third consecutive time.
  • His three-year tenure will end in 2021 and will also be his final term as the Chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee.
  • Kumble was appointed to the post of the Chairman of the panel in the year 2012 for his first term followed by second term in the year 2016

Nagendra Nath Sinha appointed chief of NHAI

  • Nagendra Nath Sinha has been appointed the chief of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
  • He will replace Sanjeev Ranjan, who has been named secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in a reshuffle.

  • Famous Industrialist and Philanthropist Dinesh Shahra has launched his book titled ‘Simplicity & Wisdom’. The book is dedicated to Late eminent Vedanti Swami Pragananandji.

National Safety Day: March 4

  • The National Safety Day is celebrated every year on March 4 since 1972.
  • The is organized by the National Safety Council to instill a sense of safety awareness among people by providing them with safety, health and environment related support services.
  • The National Safety Day Theme 2019 is “Cultivate and Sustain a Safety Culture for Building Nation”.
  • National Safety Week is celebrated from 4 March to the 10 March by organizing week long safety campaigns.
