India’s Foreign Exchange Reserves Rise By $4.3 Billion as on April 26: RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released a data on May 3, 2019 stating that India’s Foreign Exchange Reserves increased by $4.368 billion to $418.515 billion in the week ending April 26 helped by the second dollar-rupee swap auction.
  • Within the foreign exchange reserves, the foreign currency assets rose by USD 4.387 billion to USD 390.421 billion.
  • Gold reserves remained unchanged at USD 23.303 billion.
  • Special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund was down by USD 5.9 million to USD 1.449 billion.
  • India’s reserve position with the Fund also declined USD 13.6 million to USD 3.341 billion.

Canada’s $10 bill adjudged as the best bank note for 2018 by IBNS

  • $10 bill of Canada has been adjudged as the best bank note for 2018 by the International Bank Note Society (IBNS).
  • This note of Bank of Canada features civil rights activist Viola Desmond (civil rights activist). Banknotes from 16 nations were in the race.
  • The IBNS Banknote of the Year award is an initiative to recognise an exceptional banknote issued every year.

Malaysia Set to Open World’s First Crypto Powered City

  • Malaysia is set to become the site of the world’s first crypto city, where cryptocurrency called DMI will be used in place of cash.
  • The government of Malaysia is developing 835 acres of Malacca City into a tourist destination for the crypto lovers. The city will be called the Melaka Straits City. Tourist visiting the city will reportedly be able to convert their money into DMI through their mobile phones or computers.

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo wins 2019 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize

  • Journalists Kyaw Soe Oo and Wa Lone from Myanmar have been awarded with the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize 2019. 
  • They were awarded as a part of celebration of World Press Freedom Day on 3 May. They have won the award for reporting alleged human rights violations in state of Rakhine, Myanmar.
  • The Prize recognizes outstanding contributions to the defence or promotion of press freedom especially in the face of danger and is named after Guillermo Cano Isaza, the Colombian journalist who was assassinated in front of the offices of his newspaper El Espectador in Bogotá, Colombia, on 17 December 1986.

CEA Krishnamurthy Subramanian Included in Advisory Council of 15th Finance Commission

  • Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian, the Chief Economic Advisor to Central government, has been included as the member of the Advisory Council of the Fifteenth Finance Commission.
  • He is the twelfth Member of the Council.
  • The Fifteenth Finance Commission had constituted an 11 member Advisory Council on April 16 2018.
  • The other Members of the Council include: Dr. D.K. Srivastava, Dr. Indira Rajaraman, Dr. Arvind Virmani, Dr. Surjit S. Bhalla, Dr. Sanjeev Gupta, Prof. Pinaki Chakraborty, Sajjid Chinoy, Neelkanth Mishra, Prachi Mishra, Dr M. Govinda Rao, and Dr. Omkar Goswami.

General Tod D.Wolters Sworn in as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe

  • The United States Air Force General Tod D.Wolters has been sworn in as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), the top military officer of the 29-nation NATO military alliance.
  • He succeeds General Curtis M.Scaparrotti (US Army) as NATO’s 19th SACEUR for a term likely to run two to three years.
  • General Tod D.Wolters will also serve as commander of U.S. forces in Europe.

AAI names Sunil Sharma as acting President

  • Archery Association of India has named its senior vice president Sunil Sharma as its acting president. This comes after AAI president B.V.P. Rao resigned.
  • A new full-time president will be elected soon.

Noted writer, academician Maramraju Satyanarayana Rao passed away

  • Prominent writer and academician, Maramraju Satyanarayana Rao passed away at the age of 84 years.
  • He had authored several books and had worked as professor of political science and registrar of Ambedkar Open University in Telangana.
