Govt sets up forum for cooperatives to boost farm exports

  • Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has announced the formation of a Cooperative Sector Exports Promotion Forum (CSEPF). The aim is to achieve the target of doubling farm exports to USD 60 billion by 2022.
  • Since the export cooperatives are in a very nascent stage in India, hence the government’s aim is to get them together and encourage them to produce and market products for the global market.
  • Cooperative Sector Exports Promotion Forum (CSEPF) has been set up in National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) which will work with 20 states and union territories in the area of export.

Govt sets up committee of CMs to ‘transform Indian agriculture’; Head- Devendra Fadnavis

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has constituted a high-powered committee of chief ministers for the transformation of agriculture and raising farmers’ income.
  • The 9 member committee is headed by Devendra Fadnavis, the CM of Maharashtra. The committee will suggest policy measures, attract investments and raise growth in food processing.
  • The remaining members of the committee are Chief Ministers of Karnataka, Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, (Union Agriculture, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Narendra Singh Tomar) and NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand.

UGC launches STRIDE scheme to boost research culture in Indian universities

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved a new scheme named ‘Scheme for Trans-disciplinary Research for India’s Developing Economy’ (STRIDE). The scheme is aimed at strengthening research culture and innovation in universities and colleges of the country.
  • An Advisory Committee has been set up by the UGC to oversee the STRIDE Scheme and is headed by Prof Bhushan Patwardhan. He is the Vice Chairman of UGC.
  • The STRIDE Scheme has three components:
  • Component 1: First is to identify young talent and providing research capacity building in diverse disciplines by mentoring, nurturing and supporting young talents to innovate solutions for local, regional, national and global problems. This component is open to all disciplines for a grant up to Rs 1 crore.
  • Component 2: to enhance problem-solving skills with the help of social innovation and action research to improve well being of people and contribute to India’s developing economy. Collaborations between universities, government, voluntary organisations, and industries are encouraged under this scheme. This component is also open to all disciplines for grant up to 50 lakh-1 crore.
  • Component 3: Funding high impact research projects in the field of identified thrust areas in humanities and human sciences through a national network of eminent scientists from leading institutions. This component is only open to specific disciplines with a possible grant of up to Rs 2 lakhs to developing a proposal.

AYUSH Ministry signs MOU with MeitY for AYUSH GRID Project

  • Ministry of AYUSH (MOA) and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) have signed MOU for AYUSH GRID Project.
  • The Project aims for digitization of AYUSH Sector. It will be beneficial for all stakeholders of AYUSH including citizens of the country and in turn, will help to achieve various national and international goals in healthcare.

UP Government Launches Month Long DASTAK Campaign to Eradicate JE and AES

  • The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a massive door to door campaign named “DASTAK” to eradicate the deadly Acute Encephellitis Syndrome(AES) and Japanese Encephallitis(JE).
  • The campaign has been launched in association with UNICEF. The month long campaign will run from 1 to 31 July, 2019.
  • the Slogan of DASTAK is ‘Darwaja khatkhatao, AES aur JE ko Bhagao’.
  • Under the campaign, teams will go in every village of the state to create awareness about the communicable diseases as well as JE and AES. 

Delhi Airport becomes first airport to operationalise Transshipment Hub Centre

  • Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), has become the first airport in the country to operationalise a dedicated Transshipment Excellence Centre (TEC). The TEC will simplify and expedite the procedure for transfer of transshipment cargo.
  • The facility will allow exporters and shippers in the region to bring their cargo to Delhi and move it globally.
  • DAIL manages the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Transshipment is the process of offloading a cargo from one aircraft and loading it to another aircraft at a point between the origin city and final destination.

India Assisted Mahatma Gandhi IT & Biotechnology Park Inaugurated in Cote d’Ivoire

  • The Mahatma Gandhi IT and Biotechnology Park (MGIT-BP) was inaugurated on June 27, 2019 in Cote d’Ivoire. It is a dedicated Free Trade Zone (FTZ) for IT and Biotechnology.
  • MGIT-BP is being built with the Indian assistance through EXIM Bank Lines of Credit of USD 20 million.

Trump Becomes First Sitting US President to Step Into North Korea

  • On June 30, 2019, President Donald Trump became the first sitting US head to set foot in North Korea.
  • Trump was on a four-day trip to Asia to visit Japan and South Korea. During his visit to South Korea, Trump crossed the military demarcation line between North Korea and South Korea to step over Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) and shook hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
  • Mr Trump was accompanied to the DMZ by South Korean Moon Jae-in and even agreed to resume talks on nuclear programs with North Korea.

India Pledges USD 5 million to UN Palestine Refugee Agency in 2019

  • The Government of India has pledged to contribute USD 5 million in 2019 to the UN Palestine refugee agency, UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East).
  • India increased its annual financial contribution fourfold to the UNRWA core budget, from USD 1.25 million in 2016 to USD 5 million in 2018.

Morgan Stanley India’s GDP at 6.2% in 2019 and 7.1% in 2020

  • America based Investment Bank, Morgan Stanley has predicted the GDP growth rate for India at 6.2% in 2019 and 7.1% in 2020. For 2018 it was 7.4%.
  • Morgan Stanley has also cut the global growth estimate at 3% and 3.2%t for 2019 and 2020.

Indo-French Joint Air Exercise Garuda-VI Kicks Off

  • The bilateral air exercise named Garuda VI between Indian Air Force and French Air Force (Armée de l’Air) began at French air base Mont de Marsan on July 1, 2019.
  • The exercise will take place from July 1 to 12, 2019.

Government Reappoints N.S. Vishwanathan as RBI Deputy Governor for One Year

  • N.S Vishwanathan has been reappointed as deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) with effect from 4 July 2019. His tenure was to end on 3 July 2019.
  • Vishwanathan is in charge of regulation of banks, non-banking finance companies and cooperative banks.
  • He is one of the three deputy governors of Central bank, besides B P Kanungo and M K Jain.

V K Tyagi takes over as CVO of PNB

  • V K Tyagi has been appointed as the chief vigilance officer (CVO) of Punjab National Bank (PNB).
  • Before this, he was a director in the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) under the finance ministry. He also holds 35 years of work experience in State Bank of India.

MTNL Chairman P.K. Purwar gets Additional Charge of BSNL CMD

  • The government has appointed MTNL Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) P.K. Purwar as the interim CMD of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL).
  • He has been appointed for a period of three months with effect from July 1,  2019 or till the appointment of a regular incumbent to the post or until further orders, whichever is earliest 
  • He succeeds Anupam Shrivastava who retired upon superannuation on June 30, 2019.

Nalin Shinghal appointed as CMD of BHEL

  • Nalin Shinghal has been appointed as the chairman and managing director (CMD) of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
  • BHEL is India’s largest power generation equipment manufacturer and is owned by Government of India.

Manoj Kumar Nambiar appointed as chairman of MFIN

  • Manoj Kumar Nambiar has been appointed as the Chairman of Microfinance Institutions Network (MFIN).
  • Microfinance Institutions Network is an association for the microfinance sector in India. Its member organizations constitute the leading microfinance institutions in India.

21st Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship to be held in Odisha

  • Odisha Government will host the 21st Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship at the Jawaharlal Indoor Stadium in Cuttack. The event is scheduled for July 17 to 22.
  • This championship will see participation from some of the best players from across the world.

Renowned Motorcycle Racer Carlin Dunne Passes Away

  • A prominent motorcycle racer Carlin Dunne passed away as he crashed near the finish line of an event during the 2019 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Championship.
  • The  36-year-old Ducati racer was famous as king of the mountain.
