WCD Ministry sets up task force under Jaya Jaitly to examine maternal mortality rate, women’s health among others

• The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) has constituted a task force to examine matters related to the age of motherhood, imperatives of lowering Maternal Mortality Rate and improvement of nutritional levels.
• The 10 member task force will be headed by Jaya Jaitly and is tasked to submit the report by 31st July 2020.
• The task force will be provided secretarial assistance by the Niti Aayog.

Roles & Responsibilities of the Task Force:

• Suggest suitable legislations and amendments in existing laws, and chalk out a detailed roll-out plan with timelines to implement these recommendations.
• Examine the correlation of the age of marriage and motherhood with the health, medical wellbeing and nutritional status of the mother and her baby during pregnancy, childbirth and afterwards.
• Examine the issues related to Infant Mortality Rate, Maternal Mortality Rate, Total Fertility Rate, Sex Ratio at Birth, Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and any other issues pertaining to health and nutrition.
• Suggest measures for promoting higher education among women.
