National
PM Modi launches SAFAL Assessment Framework for CBSE Students
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched SAFAL initiative of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), on July 29, 2021, on the occasion of the first anniversary of National Education Policy (NEP).
- SAFAL stands for Structured Assessment For Analysing Learning.
- SAFAL is a competency-based assessment programme for grades 3, 5 and 8 introduced by the CBSE, to assess the progress of foundational skills and basic learning outcomes among students.
- This SAFAL initiative is in line with Para 4.40 of the National Education Policy 2020 which recommends that, for the benefit of students, parents, teachers, principals, and the entire schooling system in planning improvements to schools and teaching-learning processes, all students will take school examinations in Grades 3, 5 and 8 which would test achievement of basic learning outcomes, through assessment of core concepts along with relevant higher-order skills and application of knowledge in real-life situations, rather than rote memorization.
- SAFAL will be conducted on a pilot basis in CBSE schools during the academic year 2021-22, in key curricular areas of Language, Mathematics, and EVS, Science.
Karnataka becomes first State to provide 1% reservation for Transgender persons in Government Employment
- Karnataka has become the first state in India to reserve jobs in public employment in favour of transgender persons.
- As per the information, the state government has approved 1% horizontal reservation for transgenders in government jobs.
- For this the government has amended the Karnataka Civil Services (General Recruitment) Rules, 1977.
- The amendment is made to Rule 9 by inserting Sub Rule (1D) to provide for 1% of vacancies which needs to be filled in any service or post by the state government from among the transgender candidates in each category of general, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribesand in each of thecategories among the Other Backward Classes.

UT of Ladakh gets RBI nod to Acquire 8.23% stake in J&K Bank
- On July 26, 2021, the Government of the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh has received the approval of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to acquire 8.23 percent of the paid-up equity capital of Jammu and Kashmir Bank Ltd.
- This means that the ownership of 8.23 percent (4,58,29,445 Equity Shares) shareholding of J&K Govt. in Jammu and Kashmir Bank shall now be transferred to the Government of UT of Ladakh as on the date of enforcement of Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, i.e. October 31, 2019.
- Additionally, one post of Director on the Board of the J&K Bank has been earmarked for the UT of Ladakh.
RBI imposes Rs 5 crore penalty on Axis Bank for non-compliance with certain rules
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 5 crore on Axis Bank on July 28, 2021, for non-compliance with certain provisions of the norms of central bank.
- The penalty has been imposed for contravention of certain provisions of directions issued by the RBI on ‘Strengthening the Controls of Payment Ecosystem between Sponsor Banks and SCBs/UCBs as a Corporate Customer’, ‘Cyber Security Framework in Banks’, ‘RBI (Financial Services provided by Banks) Directions, 2016’, ‘Financial Inclusion- Access to Banking Services – Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account’ and ‘Frauds – Classification and Reporting’.

- Google’s parent company, Alphabet has announced that they will soon launch a new company, known as Intrinsic, which will focus on building industrial robots software.
- The new company will focus on releasing new robotic software and projects related to artificial intelligence.

Najib Mikati elected as new Lebanese Prime Minister
- Billionaire businessman Najib Mikati has been voted as the new prime minister of Lebanon in a Parliament election on July 26, 2021.
- The 65-year-old received 72 votes out of a total of 118 members of parliament.
- If Mikati successfully forms a government, this would be his third stint as Lebanon’s prime minister.
- Prior to this, Mikati had served as Prime Minister of Lebanon in 2005 and from 2011 to 2014.

- The World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed every year on July 30.
- The day was designated by the UN General Assembly in 2013 to raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.
- The 2021 theme for World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is “VICTIMS’ VOICES LEAD THE WAY”
