Indore become only Indian city to get selected for International Clean Air Catalyst Programme

  • The Indore city of Madhya Pradesh, or the cleanest city of India, has become the only city from the country to be selected for International Clean Air Catalyst Programme.
  • Clean Air Catalyst is a new flagship programme launched by The US Agency for International Development (USAID) and a global consortium of organisations, led by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) to combat air pollution in low and middle-income countries by accelerating clean air solutions.
  • The project will be operated for a period of five years to purify the air in the city with the cooperation of Indore Municipal Corporation and Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board.
  • Under the project, USAID and partners will work with local communities to better understand local pollution sources and identify, test, accelerate, and scale solutions for cleaner, healthier air.

Madhya Pradesh announces Ayush-based economic upgradation scheme ‘Devaranya Yojana’

  • The State Government of Madhya Pradesh has prepared an Ayush-based economic up-gradation scheme named Devaranya Yojana, to bring together AYUSH and tourism to boost employment opportunities in tribal areas.
  • The scheme is launched with the dual objective of maximizing Ayurveda benefits in the scheduled tribal areas and increase employment and livelihood opportunities in tribal-dominated areas. 
  • Under the Devaranya Yojana, medicinal and aromatic plants will be cultivated in the tribal-dominated areas, industries based on them, medicine manufacturing, storage, processing, marketing, rural and health tourism in tribal areas will be promoted.

Puri city of Odisha becomes first in India to provide 24×7 ‘safe to drink’ tap water facility

  • Puri, in Odisha, has become the first city in India to implement the Drink-from-Tap project. The city now offers safe drinking water directly from the tap on 24 hours basis, through smart water management technology. 
  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the Sujal or ‘Drink From Tap’ mission in Puri on July 26, 2021. 
  • As a result of this, the people of Puri will receive high-quality drinking water directly from the tap.
  • This means that there is no need to store or filter drinking water for cooking and drinking.
  • The initiative will benefit around 2.5 lakh people of Puri along with 2 crore tourists coming to Puri every year.

Rakesh Asthana appointed as Delhi Police Commissioner

  • Border Security Force (BSF) Director General (DG), Rakesh Asthana has been appointed as the Delhi Police Commissioner on July 27, 2021, with immediate effect.
  • His appointment comes just three days before his superannuation on July 31, 2021.
  • Rakesh Asthana, a 1984 batch IPS officer of Gujarat cadre, will have a tenure of one year.

Brazil landscape garden Sitio Burle Marx receives UNESCO World Heritage status

  • The Sitio Burle Marx site, a landscape garden in Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro has been added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites.
  • The garden features more than 3,500 species of plants native to Rio and is considered a laboratory for botanical and landscape experimentation.
  • The site has been named after Burle Marx, a Brazilian landscape architect whose designs of parks and gardens made him world-famous. The Sitio Burle Marx site was his home until 1985.

Arjuna Award-winning Badminton Legend Nandu Natekar passes away at 88

  • Legendary Indian badminton player Nandu Natekar, who became the first Indian to win the international title in 1956, has passed away, suffering from age-related ailments.  He was 88.
  • Natekar won over 100 national and international titles for India in his career spanning 15 years.
  • He was the recipient of the first Arjuna Award, instituted in 1961. 
  • In 1956, Natekar won the Men’s Singles title in the Selangor International Tournament in Kuala Lumpur to win the first international title by an Indian badminton player.

International Tiger Day: 29 July

  • International Tiger Day ( also called Global Tiger Day) is celebrated every year on July 29 to raise awareness for tiger conservation.
  • The day was created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia to put in place a global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues.
  • During the Summit, 13 tiger range countries came together to create Tx2, the global goal to double the number of wild tigers by the year 2022. 
  • The theme/Slogan for 2021 International Tiger Day celebration is  “Their Survival is in our hands”.
