First marine ambulance boat ‘PRATHEEKSHA’ commissioned in Kerala

  • The Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the first ever marine ambulance named ‘PRATHEEKSHA’ on 27 August 2020 via videoconferencing.
  • Pratheeksha is first in the series of 3 fully equipped marine ambulance boat built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), for the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Kerala.
  • The other two other boats namely ‘Prathyasha’ and ‘Karunya’ were also launched on the same day.
  • These marine ambulances will be deployed at Vizhinjam village of Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala.
  • They have been built at a cost of Rs. 6.08 crore, to save the lives of fishermen during accidents at sea.
  • The boat has been designed by the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology as per the specifications of Indian Registry of Shipping.

Piyush Goyal launches National GIS-enabled land bank portal for details on industrial belts

  • On 27 August 2020, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal launched the National GIS-enabled Land Bank System- a database of industrial areas/clusters across the states- to help in providing real-time information about the availability of industrial land and resources in the country.
  • The National GIS-enabled Land Bank System  (https://iis.ncog.gov.in/parksis being developed by integrating the Industrial Information System (IIS) with state GIS (Geographic Information System) to provide deatls about State Land banks.
  • Initially, the project has been launched for six states and subsequently all the other states/UTs will be onboarded by December 2020.
  • So far around 3,300 industrial parks across 31 states/UTs covering about 4,75,000 hectare land have been mapped on the system.
  • The information available on the portal includes forest, drainage; raw material heat maps (agricultural, horticulture, mineral layers);  details of logistics, land, rail & air connectivity, tax incentives, drainage system, power supply and raw material availability on various industrial belts.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath launches NRI unified portal

  • The State Government of Uttar Pradesh under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched an ambitious ‘NRI unified portal’ to provide assistance to overseas Indians and NRIs of the state during any emergency.
  • The website can be assessed at nri.up.gov.in
  • The website will also provide a platform for NRIs keen to know about their roots or those seeking help from the UP Government to help their families in the state resolve the problems related to their house and issues with local administration.

Piyush Goyal addresses ASEAN-India Virtual Business Council Meet

  • The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal addressed the ASEAN-India Business Council virtual meet on 27 August 2020.
  • The business council meeting provided a forum to discuss concerns and best practices, share ideas, and flag the problems, so that together both the partners are able to succeed, secure future, work together, attain prosperity, and achieve a target of $300 billion trade.
  • The two sides also inked a free trade agreement (FTA) and agreed to review the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement that was signed in 2009.

14th India-Singapore Defence Policy Dialogue (DPD) held with focus on maritime security cooperation

  • The 14th India-Singapore Defence Policy Dialogue (DPD) was held virtually on 28 August 2020 to further boost the defence and security partnership between the two countries, with a special focus on the maritime sphere.
  • The meeting was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar and Permanent Secretary (Defence), Singapore Mr Chan Heng Kee.
  • The Implementing Arrangement on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) was signed between India and Singapore during the meeting.

Japan’s longest-serving PM Shinzo Abe resigns due to ill-health

  • The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe has announced to step down from the post on 28 August 2020, because of the poor health conditions.
  • The 65-year-old had held record seven years and eight months as leader of the world’s third-biggest economy, becoming the longest-serving Prime Minister in Japanese history.
  • He had been serving as the PM of Japan since 26 December 2012.
  • Prior to this, he had also served as the PM for a short period between July 2006 to September 2007, becoming the youngest PM of the country, elected at the age of 52.

Legendary Bryan brothers duo announces retirement from professional tennis

  • The Bryan brothers, the most successful men’s doubles team in the history of tennis, have announced retirement with immediate effect on 27 August 2020, ending their 22-year professional careers.
  • The American Bryan Brothers are identical twin brothers Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, both 42-years of age and have won more professional games, matches, tournaments and Grand Slams than any other men’s pairing..
  • They held the World No. 1 doubles ranking jointly for 438 weeks
  • As the most accomplished team in doubles history, the Bryan brothers captured a record 119 trophies, including 16 Grand Slams, 39 ATP Masters 1000s, four ATP Finals title and Olympic gold medals.

International Day against Nuclear Tests: 29 August

  • The International Day against Nuclear Tests is held on August 29 since 2010.
  • The day aims to increase awareness about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world
  • It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 2, 2009.

National Sports Day: 29 August

  • Every year India observes the National Sports Day, (Rashtriya Khel Divas), on 29 August to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, who is regarded as nation’s greatest hockey player of all time.
  • The National Sports Day was celebrated for the first time in 2012.
  • The day is used as a platform to launch various sports schemes as well as organise various sporting events and seminars to spread awareness about the importance of physical activities and sports in life.
  • Major Dhyan Chand Singh won Olympics gold medals for India in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936. He has scored over 400 goals in his career, from 1926 to 1948.
  • He was popularly known as “The Wizard” for his magical touch, superb control, creativity and extraordinary goal-scoring feats.
