Basavaraj Bommai elected as Karnataka’s new Chief Minister

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) legislature party has unanimously elected Basavaraj S Bommai as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka on July 27, 2021.
  • The 61-year-old will succeed BS Yediyurappa, who resigned on July 26, 2021..
  • He will be sworn in as the 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka on July 28, 2021.
  • Prior to this, Basavaraj Bommai was the Home Minister in the BSY government.

Dholavira, the Harappan City in Gujarat’s Rann of Kutchch inscribed as India’s 40th UNESCO World Heritage Site

  • The historic Harappan City ‘Dholavira’ in the Rann of Kutchch, Gujarat has been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list on July 27, 2021, during the ongoing 44th session of the World Heritage Committee of the UNESCO.
  • The site was on the UNESCO’s tentative list since 2014.
  • Dholavira: a Harappan city, is one of the very few well preserved urban settlements in South Asia dating from the 3rd to mid-2nd millennium BCE.
  • With this new addition, India has entered the Super-40 club for World Heritage Site inscriptions, since Dholavira is the 40th treasure in India to get UNESCO’s World Heritage status.

Amit Shah inaugurates Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme in Meghalaya’s Cherrapunji

  • The Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the much-awaited and prestigious “Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme” at Sohra, also known as Cherrapunji, in Meghalaya.
  • Under this project, pure drinking water will be provided through taps to Sohra Town and 12 other habitations close to Sohra in East Khasi Hills. For this, the government will tap the stream sources of Wah Lyngksiar waterfall and Law Sanlait spring.
  • The Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme was proposed by the government of Meghalaya and funded by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) in 2019, at an amount of Rs 24.08 crore.
  • Apart from this, Shah also launched the ‘Sohra Afforestation Project’, a joint initiative of the Assam Rifles and the Meghalaya government. He also planted a tree saplings under the project.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma lays foundation stone of Bamboo Industrial Park in Dima Hasao

  • Assam Chief Minister Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone of the first-ever Bamboo Industrial Park of the Northeast at Manderdisa in Dima Hasao district of Assam on July 26, 2021.
  • The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER Ministry) at an estimated cost at Rs. 50 crores, over an area covering 75 hectares.
  • Once completed, the park will contribute to the overall economic development of the State apart from developing the bamboo-based industries.

Central & South Asia Connectivity Conference 2021 Held at Tashkent in Uzbekistan

  • Uzbekistan hosted a high-level International Conference titled “Central and South Asia: Regional Connectivity. Challenges and Opportunities” at Tashkent on July 15 and 16, 2021.
  • The conference was an initiative of the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
  • Delegates from over 40 countries and about 30 international organizations, and heads of think tanks participated in the conference.
  • From India, the Union Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar led the Indian delegations at the event.
  • The forum aimed at strengthening historically close and friendly ties, trust and good-neighborliness between Central and South Asia in the interests of all peoples and countries of both regions.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh Visits Tajikistan to attend SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting

  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh is on a three-day visit to Dushanbe, Tajikistan from July 27-29, 2021 to attend the annual meeting of the Defence Ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states.
  • During the annual meeting, defence cooperation issues among SCO member states will be discussed and a communique is expected to be issued after the deliberations. 
  • Raksha Mantri will also meet his Tajikistan counterpart Col Gen Sherali Mirzo to discuss bilateral issues and other issues of mutual interest.

IMF Projects India’s economic growth forecast for FY22 at 9.5% & FY23 at 8.5%

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sharply cut India’s economic growth projection by 300 basis points, from 12.5 percent to 9.5 percent for the financial year 2021-22 (FY22)
  • The downward revision in the GDP growth rate is due to lack of access to vaccines and possibility of renewed waves of coronavirus.
  • For FY23 (2022-23), IMF has estimated the gross domestic product (GDP) of India at 8.5 percent, which is 160 basis points higher than its earlier projection of 6.9 percent.
  • Incase of global economy IMF has projected 6.0 percent growth in 2021 and 4.9 percent in 2022.

INS Talwar Participates in Maritime Exercise Cutlass Express 2021, organised in Kenya’s Mombasa

  • The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Talwar is participating in multinational maritime exercise named ‘Cutlass Express 2021 (CE21)’, which has been organised along the East Coast of Africa, in Mombasa, Kenya
  • The annual maritime exercise aims to promote national and regional maritime security in East Africa and the Western Indian Ocean.
  • The Exercise Cutlass Express 2021 (CE21) has been organised from July 26 to August 06, 2021.
  • It has been sponsored by the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), and is being conducted by the US Naval Forces Africa.

Indo-Russia Joint Military Drill ‘Exercise INDRA 2021’ to be held in August 2021 at Volgograd in Russia

  • The 12th Edition of Indo-Russia joint military exercise called ‘Exercise INDRA 2021’ will be held at Volgograd, Russia from 01 to 13 August 2021.
  • 250 personnel from both the nations will form part of the exercise, which will involve conduct of counter terror operations against international terror groups, under the United Nations mandate.
  • Exercise INDRA-21 will further strengthen mutual confidence and interoperability between the Indian & Russian Armies and enable sharing of best practices between the contingents of both the countries.

Japan’s Yuto Horigome wins Olympics’ First Gold for Skateboarding

  • Yuto Horigome of Japan has achieved the feat of winning the first ever skateboarding competition at the Olympic Games.
  • The 22-year-old scored 37.18 points to win the first ever Olympic Gold medal for skateboarding in the men’s street skating competition, held at Ariake Urban Sports Center, in Tokyo.
  • Kelvin Hoefler of Brazil won silver while Jagger Eaton of the United States clinched the bronze.

World Hepatitis Day : 28 July

  • The World Hepatitis Day is observed on 28 July every year to raise global awareness of the burden of viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that causes a range of health problems, including liver cancer.
  • The day 28 July was chosen for World Hepatitis Day because it is the birthday of Nobel-prize winning scientist Dr Baruch Blumberg, who discovered hepatitis B virus (HBV). He also developed a diagnostic test and vaccine for the virus.
