Gujarat Tops NITI Aayog’s inaugural Export Preparedness Index 2020

  • NITI Aayog in partnership with the Institute of Competitiveness has released the first edition of the Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2020 on 26 August 2020.
  • The index aims to examine export preparedness and performance of Indian states and union territories, identify challenges and opportunities; enhance the effectiveness of government policiesand encourage a facilitative regulatory framework to make these states and UTs active participants in the country’s export efforts.
  • The overall Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2020 has been topped by Gujarat.
    • Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu ranked second and third respectively.
  • Six of eight coastal states feature in the top ten rankings.
  • Across the Union Territories, Delhi has performed the best, followed by Goa and Chandigarh.
  • Among the Himalayan states, Uttarakhand is top ranked, followed by Tripura and Himachal Pradesh.
  • In the landlocked states, Rajasthan has performed the best, followed by Telangana and Haryana.

Tamil Nadu women top the list of MUDRA loan scheme beneficiaries

  • Women of Tamil Nadu have topped the list of women borrowers under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) since its inception.
  • More than 15 crore loans amounting to 4.78-lakh-crore have been disbursed to women borrowers under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY).
  • As on March 31, 2020 women in Tamil Nadu had availed Rs. 58,227 crore loan from the scheme followed by West Bengal Rs. 55,232 crore, Karnataka Rs. 47,714 crore, Bihar Rs. 44,879 crore and Maharashtra Rs. 42,000 crore loan.

Ahmedabad Railway Division introduces first-of-its-kind Baggage Sanitization and Wrapping Machine

  • The Ahmedabad Railway Division of the Indian Railways has introduced a unique and first of its kind concept of ‘Baggage Sanitization and Wrapping Machine’ at Ahmedabad Railway Station in Gujarat to ensure safe travel amid the pandemic.
  • The baggage sanitization and wrapping machine aims to ensure 360 degree sanitization of the luggage by using ultra violate (UV) radiation, which would have no harmful effects on tiffins, food, vegetables or water kept in the baggage.
  • The service will be voluntary in nature for passengers, who will have to pay charge upto Rs. 80, depending upon the size and weight of the luggage.
  • The machine has been set up on around 69 sq meters space on Ahmedabad Railway Station and will help Ahmedabad Division to earn additional revenue of Rs. 6 lakh.

Rajiv Srivastava Steps Down as MD & CEO of Indian Energy Exchange (IEX)

  • Rajiv Srivastava, the Managing Director & CEO of Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) has resigned on August 24, 2020 from the board of the company with immediate effect, due to his personal reasons.
  • The board of directors of the company have given Satyanarayan Goel the additional charge of Managing Director and CEO for an interim period.
  • Goel is the non-executive chairman of the board and had served as the Managing Director & CEO of the company from January 21, 2014 to July 20, 2019.

Vinay Tonse appointed as MD and CEO of SBI Mutual Fund

  • Vinay Tonse has been appointed as the managing director and chief executive officer of SBI Mutual Fund (MF).
  • He has replaced Ashwani Bhatia, who has been now appointed as the managing director (MD) of State Bank of India.

Hyderabad’s Neelakanta Bhanu Prakash wins Mental Calculation World Championship at Mind Sports Olympiad

  • Neelkantha Bhanu Prakash of Hyderabad has become the first Indian to win the gold medal at the Mental Calculation World Championship 2020 at Mind Sports Olympiad (MSO) held in London recently.
  • The 20-year-old Neelkantha Bhanu Prakash, is a student of Mathematics at Delhi’s St Stephen’s College and holds the record for being the ‘fastest human calculator’ in the world.
  • This is the first time that India has won a gold medal at MSO, the most prestigious international competition for games of mental skill and mind sports held annually
  • With a clear margin of 65 points, Bhanu won the medal by surpassing 29 other competitors, up to 57 years of age, from 13 countries.
  • He holds four world records and 50 Limca records for being the ‘fastest human calculator’ in the world.

  • James Anderson from England has become the first-ever fast bowler to take 600 wickets in a Test Match Cricket.
  • Overall he is the 4th bowler to take 600 test wickets after 3 spinners Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, and Anil Kumble.
  • He achieved this feat against Pakistan when he dismissed Azhar Ali.

Seven-time National Table Tennis Champion Poulomi Ghatak announces retirement, to focus on coaching

  • Veteran Indian table tennis player from West Bengal, Poulomi Ghatak, has announced her retirement from the game to shift focus on coaching career.
  • The Kolkata-born athlete is a seven-time national champion, winning between 1998 and 2016.
  • The 37-year-old had represented India at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006 and the Commonwealth Championships between 2000 and 2008.
  • She made her Olympic debut at the Olympic Games in Sydney when she was just 16.

  • Pascal Lissouba, the former President of the Republic of the Congo has passed away after suffering from short illness. He was 88.
  • He was president of the Republic of Congo (also called Congo-Brazzaville, to distinguish it from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)) from 1992 to 1997.
