PM Modi inaugurates One World TB Summit in Varanasi

  • Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi addressed the One World TB Summit at Rudrakash Convention Centre in Varanasi, on March 24, 2023.
  • It must be noted that, under the leadership of PM Modi, India is on the path of ending TB by 2025 
  • Select States/UTs and districts were awarded for their progress towards ending TB.
  • The winners were Karnataka and Jammu & Kashmir on the State/UT level and The Nilgiris, Pulwama and Anantnag at the district level. 

PM Modi inaugurates medical institute at Chikkaballapur in Karnataka

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Muddenahalli in Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka on March 25, 2023.
  • The Institute has been established by the Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence.
  • It will provide free medical education and offer free medical treatment to the poor. 
  • Apart from this, PM Modi also emphasized every Indian to contribute towards making India a developed country by 2047.

Centre hikes DA/DR by 4 percent to 42%

  • The Central Government has announced an increase in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) for central government pensioners by 4 percent.
  • This will increase the overall DA/DR from current 38% to 42%.
  • The hiked DA/DR will be effective from January 1, 2023.
  • This move will benefit around 47.58 lakh central government employees and 69.76 lakh central government pensioners.

Centre extends Rs 200 per LPG cylinder subsidy by one more year

  • The Union Cabinet has extended the LPG cylinder subsidy of Rs 200, under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana by one year.
  • This means that Rs 200 per LPG cylinder will be provided to the beneficiaries for one more year, to ease the burden of high cooking gas prices. 
  • This decision has been taken keeping in mind the high prices of petroleum products in the international market.
  • The move will benefit 9.6 crore (96 million) families.

Reliance Industries appoints Srikanth Venkatachari as new CFO

  • Srikanth Venkatachari has been appointed as the new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL).
  • Venkatachari will take charge from June 01, 2023.
  • He is currently serving as the Joint CFO of the company since 2011.
  • He will replace Alok Agarwal,who has been appointed as senior advisor to the Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani.

Luis Caffarelli wins the 2023 Abel prize

  • Luis Caffarelli is the winner of the 2023 Abel prize, unofficially called the Nobel prize for mathematics.
  • Mr Caffarelli has won the prestigious award for his work on partial differential equations (PDA), a class of equations that describe many real-world physical systems, from melting ice to jet engines.
  • He is the first ever winner of Abel Prize from South Africa.
  • Luis Caffarelli is currently a professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

Intel co-founder Gordon Moore dies at 94

  • Gordon E. Moore, one of the co-founder of US Chipmaker Intel, has passed away. He was 94.
  • Moore and his longtime colleague Robert Noyce founded Intel Corporation in July 1968 as NM Electronics.
  • He was one of the driving personalities behind the creation of Silicon Valley.

Earth Hour 2023: 26 March

  • Every year, the Earth Hour is celebrated worldwide on the last Saturday of the March month to show support for fight against climate change and commitment towards better planet.
  • Earth Hour 2023 is being marked on March 25, 2023.
  • The theme for Earth Hour 2023 is Switch Off
  • The Day is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), encouraging individuals, communities, corporates, and households to turn off their lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
  • It was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007 to raise awareness for energy consumption and effects on the environment.

International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade 2023: 25 March

  • International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is marked on 25 March every year to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice
  • 2023 Theme: Fighting slavery’s legacy of racism through transformative education”  
  • The day was designated for international observance by United Nations in 2007.
  • It was first observed in 2008 to remember those who suffered and died at the hands of the brutal slavery system.

International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members 2023: 25 March

  • The United Nations observes the International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members on 25 March every year.
  • The UN observes the day to mobilize action, demand justice and strengthen its resolve to protect UN staff and peacekeepers, as well as the colleagues in the non-governmental community and the press.
  • The day commemorates the anniversary of the abduction of Alec Collett in 1985 by armed gunman.
  • He was a former journalist who was working for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
  • His body was found in the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon in 2009.
