Government Forms National Council for Transgenders to Formulate Policies Aimed at Equality & Participation

  • Central Government has constituted the National Council for Transgender Persons to formulate policies, programmes, legislation and projects for the benefits of the transgender community and help them in achieving equality and have full participation by them.
  • Union Minister of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment will be the ex-officio Chairperson of the council. Presently, this post is held by Thaawar Chand Gehlot.
  • The council was established by the Centre in exercise of the powers conferred by the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019.

Ministry of Tourism virtually signs an MoU with Travel Agents Association of India &  FICCI Ladies Organisation to promote tourism as sustainable livelihood model for women’s economic empowerment

  • The Ministry of Tourism has signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) and FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) for women empowerment.
  • This collaboration aims to increase participation of women in the tourism sector by initiating and engaging women at grassroot level, the middle level in semi urban, urban areas and the urban educated unemployed, to provide sustainable livelihood for women and ensure their economic upliftment. .
  • FLO and TAAI will be the facilitators in the process connecting women with the relevant stakeholders, undertake training in specific verticals for enhancing their livelihood opportunities, increasing their self-awareness as equal partners in the nation’s growth and working towards their economic empowerment.

Nitin Gadkari launches mobile app ‘Harit Path’ to monitor plantation along national highways

  • The Union Minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari has launched a mobile app called ‘Harit Path’ on 21 August 2020, via video conference while chairing a meeting to review ‘New Green Highways Policy (Plantation)’ and discuss use of new technologies in road construction.
  • The app ‘Harit Path’ has been developed by the National Highways authority of India (NHAI) to monitor the plantation and transplantation of trees along the highways, through geo-tagging and web-based GIS enabled monitoring tools.
  • The app will allow to monitor the location, growth, species details, maintenance activities, targets and achievements of each of its field units for each and every plant under all plantation projects.

General insurance companies ICICI Lombard and Bharti AXA announces merger

  • ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company and Bharti AXA General Insurance Company have announced the merger of their businesses.
  • After the merger, ICICI Lombard will become the third-largest non-life insurer in India.
  • The merger would result in an entity with a combined annual premium of Rs 16,447 crore and a market share of nearly 8.7%.

Ashwani Bhatia appointed as Managing Director of State Bank of India

  • Ashwani Bhatia has been appointed as the managing director (MD) of the State Bank of India (SBI) on 21 August 2020.
  • Bhatia will serve the post up to the date of his superannuation on May 31, 2022.
  • He has been appointed in place of P K Gupta who superannuated on March 31.
  • Bhatia is currently working as the managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) at SBI Mutual Fund.

Anand Mahindra and Shantanu Narayen selected for 2020 Leadership Awards by USISP

  • Anand Mahindra (Mahindra group Chairman) and Shantanu Narayen (Adobe Chairman and CEO) will be awarded the 2020 Leadership Awards by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF).
  • They will be awarded during the third Annual Leadership Summit, titled ”US-India Week: Navigating New Challenges”, which will be held virtually from August 31, 2020 to September 03, 2020.

China launches optical remote-sensing satellite Gaofen-9 05

  • China has successfully launched a new optical remote-sensing satellite named “Gaofen-9 05” from its Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre.
  • The satellite was sent into orbit by a Long March-2D carrier rocket. Along with it, another satellite named Tiantuo-5 and one multifunctional test satellite was also launched by the rocket.
