PM Modi Unveils ‘Call Before u Dig’ to prevent damage from uncoordinated digging 

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched an app called ‘Call Before u Dig’ (CBuD) on March 22, 2023, to protect underground public infrastructure across the country.
  • This app has been launched with the aim to help prevent uncoordinated digging that results in damage to underground utility assets like optical fibre cables.
  • The CBuD app will facilitate coordination between excavation agencies and underground utility owners to prevent damage to utilities due to digging.
  • It will help to reduce financial losses that occur in executing infrastructure projects.
  • The ‘Call Before u Dig’ mobile application has been developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications and the Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics, Government of Gujarat.

India sets target to become ‘Global Hub for Green Ship’ building by 2030

  • The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) and Ayush Shri Sarbananda Sonowal on March 22, 2023, inaugurated India’s first National Centre of Excellence in Green Port & Shipping (NCoEGPS) in Gurugram, Haryana.
  • It has been developed through collaboration between the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Government of India and the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
  • India has set the target to become ‘Global Hub for Green Ship’ building by 2030.
  • For this, the government has launched Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP).
  • Initially, Green Tugs will start to work in all major ports by 2025 and then atleast, 50% of all the Tugs will be converted into Green Tugs by 2030.

Tamil Nadu to launch its 18th wildlife sanctuary in Erode district

  • The state government of Tamil Nadu has announced a new wildlife sanctuary to be established in Erode district.
  • The new wildlife sanctuary will be called ‘Thanthai Periyar Animal Sanctuary’.
  • It will be formed in 2023-2024.
  • This will be the 18th wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das lays foundation stone of “Greenfield Data Centre” and “Enterprise Computing and Cybersecurity Training Institute” in Bhubaneshwar

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das laid the foundation stone for establishment of a new “Greenfield Data Centre” and “Enterprise Computing and Cybersecurity Training Institute” in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha on March 22, 2023.
  • The new centre of RBI is spread over 18.55 acres.
  • Once commissioned, the new facilities shall look after the emerging requirements of the RBI and the financial sector.

Rani Rampal becomes first woman hockey player to get stadium in her name

  • The Indian Railways’ Modern Coach Factory (MCF) hockey stadium in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, has been renamed as ‘Rani’s Girls Hockey Turf’.
  • This hockey stadium has been named after Indian star hockey player Rani Rampal, to honour her commitment to the sports.
  • She has now become the first woman hockey player in India to have a stadium in her name.

IN-SPACe announces ₹1 crore seed funding scheme for space startups

  • The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) has announced a Rs 1 crore seed fund scheme for early-stage space start-ups, to bolster the space industry in the country.
  • Under this scheme, the selected startups would get a grant of up to ₹1 crore in instalments.
  • Startups recognised by the DPIIT and owned 80% by Indians and have not availed more than Rs 50 lakh through any other Central Government Scheme can avail for the scheme.

Anti-submarine warfare craft ‘INS Androth’ launched in Kolkata

  • The INS Androth, second in a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), was launched on March 21, 2023, in Kolkata.
  • INS Androth has been built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata.
  • INS Arnala is the first in this series.
  • Purpose: conduct anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, low intensity maritime operations and mine laying operations.
  • INS Androth measures about 77.6 metres long and 10.5 metres wide.
  • It is capable to attain a maximum speed of 25 knots.

Indian Navy and Royal Navy conducted annual bilateral maritime Exercise KONKAN 2023 off Konkan Coast

  • The annual bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy, named Konkan 2023, was held from March 20 to 22, 2023 off the Konkan coast in the Arabian Sea.
  • Indian Navy participated with INS Trishul, a guided missile frigate, while HMS Lancaster, a  Type 23 guided missile frigate was from Royal Navy.
  • They undertook multiple maritime drills to enhance interoperability and  imbibe best practices. 

Martyrs Day (Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru): 23 March

  • Every year, March 23 is observed as Martyrs Day (Shaheed Diwas or Sarvodaya Day) to pay tribute on death anniversary of the freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru, who laid their lives for the freedom of India.
  • It was on March 23 in 1931, in Lahore (Pakistan), that these three were hanged to death for assassinating John Saunders, a British police officer in 1928.
  • They had mistook him for British police superintendent James Scott, who had ordered lathi charge, which eventually led to the death of Lala Lajpat Rai.

World Meteorological Day: 23 March

  • The World Meteorological Day is celebrated every year on 23 March to commemorate the date of the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization in 23 March 1950.
  • The day also highlights the contribution that the National Meteorological and Hydro-logical Services make to the safety and well-being of society.
  • The theme for 2023 World Meteorological Day is The Future of Weather, Climate, and Water Across Generations”.
