World’s first 3D-printed stainless steel bridge opens in Amsterdam

  • The world’s first 3D-printed stainless steel bridge has been opened for pedestrians and cyclist in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, over the Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal.
  • This 12-metre 3D-printed pedestrian bridge is designed by Joris Laarman Lab and built by Dutch robotics company MX3D , in collaboration with a consortium of experts.
  • The bridge is fabricated from stainless steel rods by six-axis robotic arms equipped with welding gear.
  • 4500 kilograms of stainless steel have been used to create this bridge.
  • The structure is fitted with a network of sensors that allows the bridge to monitor strain, movement, vibration and temperature across the structure as people pass over it and the weather changes. This data will be fed into a digital model of the bridge in efforts to further data-centric design.

SBI selects Paisalo Digital as National Corporate Business Correspondent

  • The State Bank of India has selected Paisalo Digital as its National Corporate Business Correspondent to boost its financial inclusion drive with the help of kiosk-based banking services.
  • As a business correspondent for State Bank of India, Paisalo Digital shall extend its services and its reach to the general public including its existing customers and new customers to ensure superior financial inclusion and increasing the outreach, 
  • Paisalo Digital Limited is a Systemically Important Non-Deposit taking NBFC registered with the Reserve Bank of India.
  • It was incorporated in the year 1992 as a Private Limited Company, and converted in a Public Limited Company in the year 1995.

Aramane Giridhar gets additional charge of NHAI Chairman

  • Aramane Giridhar, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has been assigned the additional charge of the post of Chairman, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
  • He has been appointed in place of Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, who has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand. 
  • Mr. Giridhar will hold the position till any officer is appointed on a regular basis or until further orders.

Indian FinMin Officer Rasmi Ranjan Das among 25 global tax experts appointed to UN Tax Committee

  • Rasmi Ranjan Das, a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, has been appointed as a member of the UN Tax Committee, by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
  • She has been appointed for five year term, from 2021 to 2025. 
  • Das is among the 25 tax experts from around the world who has been appointed as a member of the UN tax committee.
  • She is Joint Secretary, (FT&TR-I), Central Board of Direct Taxes, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.

Pedro Castillo Wins Presidential Election of Peru

  • Pedro Castillo has won the the 2021 Presidential election of Peru to be declared as the president-elect of the country.
  • The 51-year-old Castillo will be sworn in as the President on 28 July.
  • Castillo, head of Marxist party, secured 50.1% of the votes to win the election.

Ariel Henry appointed new Prime Minister of Haiti 

  • Ariel Henry was formally sworn in as the Prime Minister of Haiti on July 20, 2021.
  • The 71-year-old Henry, who is a neurosurgeon by profession, will also be serving as the acting President of Haiti, until a new President is chosen in an election scheduled for September, following the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse.

  • The World Brain Day is celebrated on July 22 every year to raise awareness and promote advocacy related to brain health.
  • The day is organised by the World Federation of Neurology (WFN).
  • It was observed for the first time in 2014 and 2021 is the eighth World Brain Day.

  • The World Fragile X Awareness Day is marked on 22 July every year to celebrate families impacted by Fragile X and highlight progress of research to find a cure. 
  • On this day, communities around the world come together to shine a light on Fragile X, by illuminating monuments and landmarks globally.
  • The World Fragile X Day was initiated by the US-based FRAXA Research Foundation.
  • Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a genetic disorder causing mild-to-moderate intellectual disability (mental retardation).

National Broadcasting Day: 23 July

  • In India, the “National Broadcasting Day” is observed on July 23 every year, to celebrate the radio, which has been an important part in people’s life in India, both as an easy medium of entertainment along with news.
  • It is celebrated because it was on this day in the year 1927, that the first-ever radio broadcast in the country went on the air from the Bombay Station under a private company, the Indian Broadcasting Company.
