HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal launches ‘Manodarpan’ initiative to provide psychosocial support to students

  • The Union Minister of Human Resource and Development (HRD) Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishak has virtually launched a mental health initiative called Manodarpan.
  • The Manodarpan initiative has been launched under Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan to provide psycho-social support to students, teachers and parents and address their issues related to mental health and emotional well being.
  • The platform will act as a sustainable psychosocial support system for all students, teachers & families, especially during these unprecedented times of #COVID19.
  • The platform can be accessed at http://manodarpan.mhrd.gov.in/
  • A helpline number 8448440632 has been launched to provide the consultation which can be accessed from morning 8 AM to 8 PM.

India’s first public EV charging plaza inaugurated in New Delhi

  • The Minister of State (IC) for Power, New and Renewable Energy, RK Singh inaugurated India’s first public EV (Electric Vehicle) charging plaza at Chelmsford Club in New Delhi on 20 July 2020.
  • The plaza has 5 EV charging points of different specifications, and has been set up with a focus on enhancing energy efficiency and promoting a robust e-mobility ecosystem in the country.
  • The EV charging plaza has been established by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) in collaboration with New Delhi Municiapal Council (NDMC).

Chhattisgarh launches ‘Godhan Nyay Yojna’, to boost rural economy

  • Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel launched ‘Godhan Nyay Yojana’ on 21 July 2020, under which the state government will purchase cow dung from the cattle rearers at the rate of Rs 2 per kg.
  • The women self-help groups will then prepare vermicompost from it, which will then be sold at Rs 8 per kg to farmers, while the dung will be utilized for other products.
  • The scheme will help to promote cattle rearing, ensure safety of livestock, help cattle ranchers earn extra income, help in tackling the problem of open grazing by stray cattle and encourage use of organic fertilizers as well as boost rural economy among other things.

India Among 10 Worst Countries For Working People: ITUC Global Rights Index

  • The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has released its Global Rights Index for the year 2020, which ranks countries on the degree of respect for workers’ rights.
  • This is the seventh edition of the annual report and ranks 144 countries.
  • The ITUC Global Rights Index ranks countries on a scale from 1 (best) to 5+ (worst)
    • 5+:- No guarantee of rights due to the breakdown of the rule of law
      5 : No guarantee of rights
      4 : Systematic violations of rights
      3 : Regular violations of rights
      2 : Repeated violations of rights
      1 : Sporadic violations of rights
  • Each country is analysed against a list of 97 indicators derived from ILO conventions.
  • The index provides an opportunity to increase the visibility and transparency of each country’s record on workers’ rights.

Key Points of the ITUC Global Rights Index

  • India has been ranked among the 10 worst countries for working people. It is rated with 5 on the scale.
  • The ten worst countries for workers in 2020 are Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Honduras, India, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Turkey and Zimbabwe.
  • The Middle East and North Africa is the worst region in the world for working people.
  • Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, Sweden, Uruguay are the best countries with rating of 1.
  • The most violated rights in the world includes:
    • RIGHT TO STRIKE
    • RIGHT TO COLLECTIVE BARGAINING
    • RIGHT TO ESTABLISH OR JOIN UNIONS
    • RIGHT TO CIVIL LIBERTIES

P Praveen Siddharth appointed as new Private Secretary to President Kovind

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has appointed P Praveen Siddharth, a 2001-batch officer of Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax), as the new Private Secretary (PS) to President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • He replaces Vikram Singh, who has been appointed as the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Shipping.

Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon passes away at 85

  • Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon has passed away after battling long time illness. He was 85.
  • He had been hospitalised in Lucknow since June 11, after developing breathing problems among other health issues.
  • UP Governor Anandiben Patel had been given the additional charges as Governor of MP in his absence.
  • Tandon was appointed as the 22nd Governor of Madhya Pradesh, replacing Anandiben Patel.
  • He had also served as the 28th Governor of Bihar from 23 August 2018 – 28 July 2019.
  • Apart from this, Tandon served in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council for two terms from 1978 to 1984, and 1990-1996;  MLA in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for three terms between 1996 to 2009 as well as an MP in the 15th Lok Sabha.

Science Exploration Day: 20 July

  • The Science Exploration Day (also called Moon Day) is marked every year on 20 July.
  • It was on this day in 1969 that Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon’s surface.
  • Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon’s surface.
  • The Armstrong- Aldrin duo spent 21.5 hours on the surface of the moon out of which they spent 2.5 hours outside of their capsules.
  • To commemorate their achievement, the day was declared a holiday in 1984 by the then President of the United States, Ronald Reagan.
