Piyush Goyal chairs 5th meeting of BRICS Industry Ministers

  • The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal chaired the 5th BRICS Industry Ministers Meeting on August 18, 2021.
  • India holds the Chairship of BRICS for 2021.
  • The theme for BRICS 2021 is BRICS@15: Intra BRICS Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation and Consensus for its Chairship.

Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur confers National Youth Awards for 2017-18 and 2018-19 to 22 awardees 

  • The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur presented the National Youth Awards for the year 2017-18 and 2018-19 on August 12, 2021 on the occasion of the International Youth Day 2021.
  • A total of 22 National Youth awards (NYA) were given in individual and organisations categories.
  • The NYA 2017-18, was conferred upon 14 awardees which included 10 awards in individual category and 4 awards in Organization category.
  • Similarly, 8 awards were given for NYA 2018-19 with 7 awards in individual category and 1 award in Organization category.
  • The award comprises of a medal, a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000/- to individual and a cash prize of Rs. 3,00,000/- to organization respectively.

National Youth Awards

USOF partners BSNL for high speed internet access to North Eastern States

  • The Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) has signed an agreement with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to make available high quality and high speed internet facility to states in the North Eastern Region of India.
  • The agreement calls for hiring 10 Gbps International Bandwidth for Internet Connectivity to Agartala from Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL).
  • The USOF will provide financial support to BSNL for a period of three years.
  • The Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) comes under Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications.

Indian Navy Conducts Bilateral Maritime Exercise with Vietnam People’s Navy

  • The Indian Navy and Vietnam People’s Navy (VPN) undertook bilateral maritime exercise on August 18, 2021 in the South China Sea, to strengthen the defence ties among the two navies
  • From India, INS Ranvijay and INS Kora took part in the exercise and from the Vietnam People’s Navy (VPN), frigate VPNS Ly Thai To(HQ-012) participated in the drill.

Priyanka Chopra replaces Deepika Padukone to be appointed as Chairperson of Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival

  • Actress-producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas has been appointed as the chairperson of Jio Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) Film Festival on August 17, 2021.
  • She replaces Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, who stepped down from the position in April 2021.
  • Priyanka was unanimously nominated by MAMI’s Board of Trustees which has Nita M Ambani as Co-Chairperson.

  • Direct selling FMCG major Amway India has roped in Olympic silver medalist weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu as brand ambassador for Amway and its Nutrilite range of products in the country.
  • Signing Chanu is also a tribute to all the incredible women leaders who have been leading from the front and re-imagining the future, for themselves, for their families and ultimately for the society at-large.

World Humanitarian Day: 19 August

  • The World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is observed every year on 19 August to pay tribute to humanitarian personnel and those workers who lost or risked their lives while doing humanitarian service.
  • The theme for 2021 WHD is  #TheHumanRace: a global challenge for climate action in solidarity with people who need it the most.
  • In 2021 we are celebrating the 12th WHD.
  • World Humanitarian Day was commemorated for the first time on 19 August 2009, after it was formally recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009.
  • Why 19 August?
    • 19 August marks the day on which the then Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq, Sérgio Vieira de Mello and 21 of his colleagues were killed in the bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad.

World Photography Day: 19 August

  • The World Photography Day is celebrated on 19 August every year to promote photography as a hobby and also inspire photographers around the globe to share a single photo with the rest of the world.
  • The first official World Photo Day was observed on August 19, 2010.
  • The origin of World Photo Day comes from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic process developed by Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce in 1837.
  • It was on August 19, 1939 that the French government purchased the patent of Daguerreotype process and announced the invention as a gift “free to the world”.
