PM Narendra Modi declares January 16 as ‘National Startup Day’

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared to mark January 16 as ‘National Start-up Day’.
  • The announcement was made by PM Modi on January 15, 2022, via video conferencing during a week-long event “Celebrating Innovation Ecosystem” as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • The Prime Minister interacted with more than 150 startups across different sectors, during the event.

IAMAI organises 16th India Digital Summit

  • The Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal virtually addressed the 16th India Digital Summit, 2022 on January 12, 2022.
  • The two day virtual event was organised on January 11 and 12, 2022 by Internet And Mobile Association of India (IAMAI).
  • The theme of the summit was “Supercharging Startups”
  • India Digital Summit is the oldest event of the digital industry in India.
  • During the event, the Minister unveiled ‘LEAP’ as the way forward to further strengthen our Startups ecosystem .
  • LEAP stands for “Leverage, Encourage, Access & Promote”.

Paytm Payments Bank emerges biggest UPI beneficiary bank while SBI biggest remitter in December 2021: NPCI Data

  • According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) emerged as the biggest receiver of UPI amount in the October to December 2021 quarter.
    • In December 2021, PPBL received 926.17 million UPI transactions in a single month. The lender became the first beneficiary bank in the country to achieve this landmark.
    • In the October to December 2021 quarter, PPBL registered 2,507.47 million beneficiary transactions
    • PPBL was also the largest UPI beneficiary bank throughout the year (except in May 2021).
  • PPBL was followed by State Bank of India (SBI) as the second-largest beneficiary bank.
    • SBI recorded 664.89 million transactions in December 2021.
  • On the other hand, SBI was also adjudged as the biggest remitter of UPI amount in December 2021.

Yes Mutual Fund renamed as White Oak Capital Mutual Fund

  • The name of YES Asset Management has been rechristened as WhiteOak Capital Asset Management and therefore the name of YES Mutual Fund has been changed to WhiteOak Capital Mutual Fund
  • The change in the names are effective from January 12, 2022.
  • In November 2021, White Oak Capital group, through its subsidiary, GPL Finance and Investments, acquired the mutual fund business, Yes Asset Management, of Yes Bank.
  • The White Oak Capital group provides investment management and advisory services for Indian equity investors.

Under-19 Shuttler Tasnim Mir becomes first Indian to achieve World No. 1 Ranking

  • India’s under-19 shuttler Tasnim Mir has become world number-1 badminton player in the women’s singles category of Under-19, in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) junior rankings.
  • With this feat the 16-year-old Tasnim has become the first Indian to top the under-19 girls’ singles world rankings.
  • Tasnim is at the top of the pile with 10,810 points.
  • She hails from Mehsana, Gujarat.

Goalkeeper Savita Punia named captain of Indian women hockey team for Asia Cup 2022 in Muscat

  • The 2022 Women’s Hockey Asia Cup will be held from 21 to 28 January 2022 at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, Oman.
  • It will be the 10th edition of the quadrennial Women’s Hockey Asia Cup, organized by the Asian Hockey Federation.
  • The 18-member Indian squad, taking part in the tournament will be captained by Goalkeeper Savita Puni.
  • Indian women are the defending champions.
  • Seven other teams competing at the Women’s Hockey Asia Cup 2022 are China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand.

Daniel Ortega sworn in for 4th straight term as Nicaragua’s President

  • Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega has been sworn in for a fourth consecutive five-year term.
  • The 76-year-old Nicaraguan politician is serving as President of Nicaragua since 2007.
  • Along with Ortega, the first lady Rosario Murillo was also sworn in for her second term as vice president.
