IIT Madras and Sony India jointly host national-level hackathon ‘SAMVEDAN 2021’

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras & Sony India have collaborated to jointly organise a National-level hackathon called ‘SAMVEDAN 2021 – Sensing Solutions for Bharat’.
  • The main purpose of this hackathon is to inspire the citizens of India to participate in solving societal problems of national importance, using IoT Sensor Board.
  • The hackathon is being organized by IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation (IITM-PTF), jointly with Sony India Software Centre.
  • IITM-PTF is a Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) for Sensor, Networking, Actuators, and Control Systems (SNACS) area supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS).
  • Participants will be provided with Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation’s SPRESENSE™ Board, free of cost through IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation, to participate in this challenge.
  • SAMVEDAN 2021 will provide a platform to successful start-ups that could solve India-specific problems of societal interest.

Indian Navy receives 10th Anti-Submarine Warfare Aircraft ‘P-8I’ from Boeing

  • On July 13, 2021, the Indian Navy received the 10th anti-submarine warfare aircraft P-8I from the US-based aerospace company Boeing.
  • It must be noted that the Defence Ministry had signed a contract for eight P-8I aircraft in 2009. However, later in 2016, it signed a contract for four additional P-8I aircraft.
  • The remaining two aircrafts are expected to be delivered in the last quarter of 2021.
  • P-8I is a long-range maritime reconnaissance and Anti-Submarine Warfare Aircraft, and a variant of the P-8A Poseidon used by the US Navy.
  • India was the first international customer of Boeing for this aircraft.
  • The Indian Navy inducted the first P-8I aircraft in 2013, while the ninth P-8I aircraft was received in November 2020.

NICL Launches First Ever Insurance Policy for Himalayan Yaks

  • The National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY) at Dirang in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh has tied up with the National Insurance Company Ltd. (NICL) for insuring yaks.
  • This is the first such instance in the country that an insurance policy for highly valuable Himalayan cattle/yak have been approved.
  • The insurance policy will be a big boon for the yak owners, as it will shield them against a number of risks posed by weather calamities, diseases, in-transit mishaps, surgical operation, strike or riots and permanent total disability for breeding or stud yaks.
  • The policy will provide financial security to the yak rearing communities in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, incase of loses incurred due to deaths of the animal, amid climate change, diseases, attacks by wild animals, etc..

Nepal Inks USD 1.3 billion mega-deal with India to develop 679 MW Lower Arun Hydropower project

  • Nepal has signed a USD 1.3 billion deal with India, to develop a 679-megawatt Lower Arun Hydropower project, located between Sankhuwasabha and Bhojpur districts in eastern Nepal.
  • As per the deal, India’s state-owned Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN), will develop the 679-megawatt hydropower project in the neighbouring Himalayan nation.
  • This will be the second mega project undertaken by India in Nepal, after the USD 1.04 billion 900-MW Arun-3 hydroelectric project.
  • The project will be developed under the build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) model.
  • This 679 MW Hydropower project is the single largest foreign investment project in the country, based on the 2017 cost estimates.

  • A new book titled The Struggle Within: A Memoir of the Emergency” has been released, by the author Ashok Chakravarti.
  • The book is published by HarperCollins India.
  • The book is a major account of the Emergency (1975-1977), one of independent India’s darkest hours.
  • Over 150,000 people were imprisoned without trial, while about eleven million were forcibly sterilized; and countless killed in police firings or otherwise eliminated.
  • Ashok Chakravarti is an economist who has been providing policy advice to countries, mainly in the African region, for the past forty years. Currently he is serving as Senior Economic Advisor to the Government of Zimbabwe.

  • Italy won the UEFA Euro 2020 final by defeating England, on penalties, following a 1–1 draw after extra time, at the Wembley Stadium in London on July 12, 2021.
  • The Italians sealed a 3-2 win in the penalty shootout, to claim their second EURO title, (won the first title in 1968).
  • The UEFA European Football Championship (commonly referred to as UEFA Euro) is the quadrennial international men’s football championship of Europe organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).

1983 World Cup winning former India cricketer Yashpal Sharma passes away at 66

  • Former Indian cricketer, Yashpal Sharma, who was the member of the Indian team that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, has passed away after massive cardiac arrest. He was 66.
  • Yashpal represented India in 37 Tests and 42 ODIs.
  • He was a middle-order batsman, who played during the 1970s and 80s.
  • The Punjab-born cricketer had represented three teams in Ranji including Punjab, Haryana and Railways.

Former WWE Wrestler ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Paul Orndorff Passes Away at 71

  • The renowned American professional wrestler, Paul Orndorff, who is best known with his nickname Mr. Wonderful, has passed away. He was 71.
  • Orndorff was one of professional wrestling’s biggest stars of the 1980s, and was famous for his appearances with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW).
  • He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.
  • He retired in 2000.
