Cabinet approves continuation of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) – “Housing for All” Mission upto December 31, 2024

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved for the continuation of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) up to December 31, 2024.
  • The continuation of the scheme based on the request of States/UTs, will help in completion of already sanctioned 122.69 lakh houses till March 31, 2022.
  • Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) is a flagship Mission of Government of India being implemented by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
  • The mission was launched on June 25, 2015, to ensure a pucca house to all eligible urban households by the year 2022.

PM Modi Dedicates 2G Ethanol Plant to the nation in Panipat, Haryana

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation, the second generation (2G) Ethanol Plant in Panipat, Haryana via video conferencing on August 10, 2022, on the occasion of World Biofuel Day.
  • The 2G Ethanol Plant has been built at an estimated cost of over Rs. 900 crore by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL).
  • The project will utilise about 2 lakh tonnes of rice straw (parali) annually to generate around 3 crore litres of Ethanol annually.
  • Five benefits of the bio-fuel plant of Panipat
    1. mother earth would be freed from the pain that was caused by burning stubble
    2. new systems for stubble cutting and its disposal, new facilities for transportation and new biofuel plants will bring new employment opportunities
    3. stubble which was a burden for the farmers, and was a cause of concern, would become a means of additional income for them.
    4. pollution in Delhi, NCR and Haryana will be reduced, and the contribution of farmers in protecting the environment will increase further
    5. the country will get an alternative fuel.

Banking

RBI cancels licence of Pune-based Rupee Co-operative Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the banking licence of Pune-based Rupee Co-operative Bank on August 11, 2022, following an order from the Bombay High Court.
  • The order shall come into effect after six weeks from August 11, 2022.
  • This means that the bank will have to cease to carry on banking business with effect from September 22, 2022. 
  • RBI cancelled the licence of Rupee Co-operative Bank due to following reasons:
    • the lender does not have adequate capital and earning prospects,
    • it failed to comply with banking regulations,
    • the continuance of the bank is prejudicial to the interests of its depositors as it is not in a position to pay them
    • public interest will be adversely affected if the bank is allowed to carry on its business any further.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh unveils book ‘Rusty Skies and Golden Winds’ authored by 11-years-old Sannidhya Sharma

  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh recently launched a book titled ‘Rusty Skies and Golden Winds’.
  • The book has been written by an 11-year-old, standard 7 student, Sannidhya Sharma, who hails from a remote village in Kharah on the outskirts of Jammu.
  • This 100-page poetry book is an anthology of 40 poems in which the young author defines the nature of the world.
  • The book is published by Blue-rose publishers.

James Marape sworn in as Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea for 2nd term

  • The Parliament of Papua New Guinea has elected unopposed the incumbent Prime Minister James Marape, for a second term.
  • Marape was sworn in as prime minister for a second time on August 10, 2022.
  • He first became prime minister of the South Pacific island nation in 2019 after Peter O’Neill resigned.

Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 to win 2022 UEFA Super Cup for record-equalling fifth time

  • Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt, 2-0 in finals to win the 2022 UEFA Super Cup for a record-equalling fifth time, on August 11, 2022, in Helsinki, Finland.
  • UEFA Super Cup is an annual football match organised by UEFA for the winners of the two main European club competitions, i.e. the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.
  • The last season’s Champions League winners Real Madrid defeated Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt to win the title for fifth time.
  • Prior to this, Team Barcelona, and Team Milan have won the trophy five times each.

2022 BRICS Games to be held online in September 2022

  • The 2022 BRICS Games is scheduled to be held from September 01 to 30 but on online platform.
  • This means that the athletes from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) will compete online.
  • The 2022 BRICS Games will feature only three competitive events, breakdancing, chess and Wushu (Chinese martial arts).
  • The online BRICS Games can enhance mutual understanding and people-to-people exchanges among participating countries in an innovative and safe way, through the power of sports..
  • The Game is being organised by China, as the host of the 14th BRICS Summit held in June 2022.

Women’s section introduced for first time in 2022 Tata Steel Chess India Tournament

  • The 4th edition of Tata Steel Chess India tournament will be held in Kolkata from November 29 to December 4, 2022.
  • For the first time, a separate women’s section has been added in the tournament, which had only the Open section so far.
  • Tata Steel Chess India (rapid and blitz) is one of the most important chess tournament in India.
  • Top Indian female players like Koneru Humpy, D Harika, and R Vaishali will compete in the maiden women’s edition.

  • World Elephant Day is observed every year on August 12 globally for the preservation and protection of the global elephants.
  • The main objective of World Elephant Day is to create awareness on elephant conservation, and to share knowledge and positive solutions for the better protection and management of wild and captive elephants.
  • The day is being officially celebrated since 2012.

International Youth Day: 12 August

  • The International Youth Day (IYD) is observed on August 12 annually to draw attention of governments and others towards youth issues worldwide.
  • 2022 Theme: Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages
  • The day was designated by the United Nations in 1999.
  • The first IYD was observed on 12 August, 2000.
