Morgan Stanley Projects India to be the fastest-growing Asian economy in FY23 with GDP at 7%

  • The analysts at Morgan Stanley expects that India is likely to be the fastest-growing Asian economy in the Asian region in 2022-23.
  • As per Morgan Stanley, the gross domestic product (GDP) growth of Indian economy is estimated at 7 percent in 2022-23 (FY23).
  • This rate is the strongest among the largest economies and contributes 28 percent to Asian and 22 percent to global growth.

Indian Army launches Him ‘Drone-a-thon’

  • The Indian Army has launched the ‘Him Drone-a-thon’ programme on August 08, 2022, in collaboration with the Drone Federation of India (DFI), to support indigenous drone ecosystem.
  • The initiative aims to achieve self-reliance in defence manufacturing by providing opportunities to the Indian drone ecosystem to develop path-breaking drone capabilities for meeting requirements of frontline troops.
  • The ‘Him Drone-a-thon’ programme is pan India initiative open for anyone from industry, academia, software developers and drone product manufacturers.
  • To begin with, the drone development in the following categories are included:
    • o Logistics/ Load carrying Drone in High Altitude Areas.
    • o Autonomous Surveillance/ Search & Rescue Drone.
    • o Micro/ Nano Drones for Fighting in Built Up Areas.
  • The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar, virtually laid the foundation stone of the Indo-Israel Center of Excellence for Vegetables in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh on August 09, 2022.
  • These Centers of Excellence (CoE) act as demonstration and training centers for the latest technologies in the field of Horticulture.
  • At the same time, they serve as a source of planting material for fruits and vegetables in protected cultivation.
  • These CoE are being set up based on Israeli technologies. The technology is provided by experts from Israel under the India-Israel Action Plan (IIAP).
  • Funds for building infrastructure for demonstration purposes will be used from Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for the holistic growth of the horticulture sector.

Singapore gives National Monument Status to Padang, where Netaji’s famous Call ‘Chalo Dilli’ was immortalised 

  • Singapore government has declared the iconic green site Padang, as its 75th national monument on August 09, 2022, the day which marked the 57th National Day of Singapore.
  • Padang is the large open field site in Singapore, from where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave the slogan of ‘Delhi Chalo’ in July 1943.
  • Padang has a strong national, historical and social significance, and is one of the oldest open spaces continuously used since the 1800s.
  • It is popular for sporting events such as cricket, football, hockey, tennis and lawn bowling
  • With the Monument Status, Padang will now be preserved and accorded the highest level of protection in Singapore under the Preservation of Monuments Act, said the National Heritage Board (NHB).

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit appointed as 49th Chief Justice of India

  • Justice Uday Umesh Lalit has been appointed as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI).
  • He will be taking over from incumbent CJI N V Ramana, with effect from August 27, 2022.
  • CJI NV Ramana took charge as 48th head of the Indian judiciary on April 24, 2021.
  • He will be demitting office on August 26, 2022 upon the completion of his over 16-month-long tenure.

Nitish Kumar Takes Oath as Bihar CM for 8th Time in 22 Years

  • JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar took oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar on August 10, 2022.
  • This is for the 8th time that Kumar took oath as Bihar CM since he was first sworn-in as the CM of the state in 2000.
  • Apart from him, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state.  
  • This move comes a day after Nitish Kumar resigned from the post of the CM of the NDA alliance government and broke ties from BJP.
  • Later he staked claim to form a new government with the RJD, the Congress and other parties.

Tennis legend Serena Williams announces her retirement after US Open

  • The 41-year-old tennis legend, Serena Williams, plans to retire from the game after the 2022 U.S. Open, which will run from August 29 to September 11, 2022.
  • During her tennis career so far, the American athletes Serena has won 73 singles titles, 23 doubles titles and over $94 million in career winnings.

Uzbekistan wins Gold in open section & Ukraine in women’s section of 44th Chess Olympiad, India wins Bronze in both

  • The team Uzbekistan has won the gold medal in the Open section of the 44th Chess Olympiad which concluded on August 09, 2022.
  • Team Armenia won silver while the India-2 team settled for bronze in Open Section.
  • In the women’s section, Ukraine won the gold medal. Team Georgia won the silver, while India-1 team won the bronze medal.

  • Former South African international umpire Rudi Koertzen has passed away, following a car crash accident
  • He was 73.
  • Rudi Koertzen was one of the most respected and famous umpires in world cricket from the late 1990s till 2010.
  • He had officiated in nearly 400 international games.
  • Koertzen was inducted into the ICC’s Elite Panel in 2002 and was a part of it for 8 years.

AIADMK’s first MP Maya Thevar passes away at  87

  • Former Member of Parliament (MP) and senior All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) politician K. Maya Thevar has passed away due to age-related illness. He was 87.
  • Mr. Maya Thevar was the first MP of the AIADMK.
  • He led the party to enter the world of politics by registering the party’s first victory by contesting by-election to Dindigul Lok Sabha constituency in 1973.
  • Also, it was Mr. Maya Thevar who chose the iconic ‘two-leaves’ symbol of the AIADMK party.
  • Later, he left AIADMK and joined the DMK.
