National

PM Modi unveils 6.5 m tall Bronze National Emblem Statute on top of new Parliament building

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi unveiled the handcrafted bronze statute of India’s National Emblem on the roof of the new Parliament building in New Delhi on July 11, 2022.
  • The emblem is made up of high-purity bronze and has a total weight of 9,500 kg and height is 6.5 metre (21 foot).
  • The emblem has a steel supporting structure, weighing around 6,500 kg, constructed to support the bronze statue.
  • It has been handcrafted by over 100 artisans who worked for over nine months to create it.
  • The statute has been installed 108 feet above the ground on Parliaments’s central foyer.

India likely to surpass China as world’s most populous country during 2023: UN World Population Prospects 2022 report

  • According to the United Nations’ World Population Prospects (WPP) 2022 report, the global population is estimated to reach eight billion in mid- November ( November 15, 2022).
  • The report also states that India is projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country during 2023.

Other key findings

  • The global population is estimated to grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050. It is further projected to reach a peak of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s and remain at that level until 2100.
  • According to the report, the population in India stands at 1.412 billion in 2022, while in China it is 1.426 billion.
  • The world’s two most populous regions in 2022 were Eastern and South-Eastern Asia, accounting 2.3 billion people, representing 29 percent of the global population.
  • Similarly Central and Southern Asia accounted for 2.1 billion people, representing 26 percent of the total world population.
  • More than half of the projected increase in global population up to 2050 will be concentrated in just eight countries. These are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania.

Parameswaran Iyer takes over as CEO of NITI Aayog

  • Parameswaran Iyer has taken charge as the new CEO of NITI Aayog with effect from July 11, 2022.
  • He replaces Amitabh Kant, who demitted office on June 30.
  • Parameswaran Iyer is a 1981-batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre. He had served as the Secretary in the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation during 2016-2020.

Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay appointed as new CMD of  Goa Shipyard Limited

  • The Union Cabinet has appointed Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay as the new chairman and managing director (CMD) of Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), for a period of five years.
  • Prior to this, Mr. Upadhyay was serving as director (operations) at GSL .

IFAD appoints Alvaro Lario as next President

  • The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has appointed its top finance executive, Alvaro Lario, as the next President to lead the UN agency.
  • Lario is currently serving as IFAD’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and an Associate Vice-President for financial operations since 2018.
  • He will take office with effect from October 01, 2022 for a four-year term.
  • Lario will replace Gilbert Houngbo who has led the organisation since 2017.

Jonny Bairstow, Marizanne Kapp named ICC Players of the Month for June

  • England batter Jonny Bairstow has been voted as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for June 2022.
  • Meanwhile, Marizanne Kapp of South Africa has been voted ICC women’s Player of the Month for June 2022.

Charles Leclerc wins F1 Austrian  Grand Prix 2022

  • Charles Leclerc (Ferrari-Monaco) has won the Formula One Austrian  Grand Prix 2022.
  • Max Verstappen (Red Bull – Netherlands) came second while Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes-Great Britain) finished third.

94-year Bhagwani Devi Dagar wins gold in World Masters Athletics Championships

  • India’s Bhagwani Devi Dagar created history by winning a gold medal for the country at the World Masters Athletics Championship-2022, held in Tampere, Finland.
  • The 94-year-old from Haryana clinched the gold in 100 metres sprint event with a timing of 24.74 seconds.
  • Apart from this, she also bagged two Bronze medals.

World Population Day: 11 July

  • The World Population Day is observed every year on July 11 to raise awareness of global population issues, including their relations to the environment.
  • The day was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989 in commemoration of the day in 1987, when the world reached the population of 5 billion.
  • Theme of 2022 World Population Day is ‘A world of 8 billion: Towards a resilient future for all – Harnessing opportunities and ensuring rights and choices for all’.

World Malala Day : 12 July

  • The United Nations designated 12 July to be observed as World Malala Day, on July 12, 2013, in honour of the young Pakistani human rights activist, Malala Yousafzai.
  • July 12 also marks the birth anniversary of Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Prize laureate.
  • On her 16th birthday, on 12 July 2013, Yousafzai delivered speech at the United Nations (UN) headquarters on the need for gender equality in education, following which the day was declared as the World Malala Day by the UN.
Obituary

B K Syngal, ‘Father of Internet in India’ passes away

  • Brijendra Kumar Syngal, the former chairman of Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), has passed away. He was 82.
  • Syngal took charge of VSNL in 1991. Under him, the company rolled out India’s internet service, because of which Syngal is widely referred to as ‘Father of Internet & Data Services in India’.

Angola’s Former President, Jose Eduardo dos Santos passes away

  • Jose Eduardo dos Santos, the former President of Angola, has passed away following a long illness. He was 79.
  • He was the second-longest serving president in Africa, after coming to power in 1979. He had stepped down in 2017.
