Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurates India’s first private LNG Facility plant at Nagpur

  • The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, inaugurated India’s first private Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility plant at Nagpur in Maharashtra, on July 11, 2021.
  • The plant has been set up on Kamptee Road near Nagpur Jabalpur Highway, by Baidyanath Ayurvedic Group, the makers of Ayurvedic medicines..
  • Once operational, this LNG filling station in Nagpur will be first such facility to operate on commercial basis.
  • LNG is a clean, pollution-free and cost effective liquid fuel, which is also easy to store and reduces the logistics cost.

India’s first Cryptogamic Garden Inaugurated in Dehradun

  • India’s first cryptogamic garden, with around 50 different species grown, has been inaugurated on July 11, 2021, in Deoban area of Dehradun in Uttarakhand.
  • The garden is situated at a height of 9,000 feet, and is spread over an area of three acres.
  • Cryptogams are the non-seed bearing plants. These primitive plants do not reproduce through seeds.
  • For example algae, bryophytes (moss, liverworts), lichens, ferns and fungi are the best-known groups of cryptogams that require moist conditions to survive.

RBI approves Re-appointment of Shyam Srinivasan as Federal Bank CEO for 3 years till September 2024

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the reappointment of Shyam Srinivasan as the MD & CEO of Federal Bank for a period of three years with effect from September 23, 2021, till September 22, 2024.
  • Srinivasan has served three terms as CEO of the Kerala-based Federal Bank since September 23, 2010.
  • He is the longest-serving MD & CEO of the bank, after its founder, late K P Hormis.

Twitter Appoints Vinay Prakash as Resident Grievance Officer for India

  • Twitter has named Vinay Prakash as the Resident Grievance Officer (RGO) for India, as per the information updated on it’s website.
  • Users can contact Vinay Prakash using an email ID listed on the page.
  • Earlier the US-based company had announced the appointment of California-based Jeremy Kessel as the new Grievance Officer for India.
  • However, as per the new IT rules in India, social media platforms with over 50 lakh users are mandated to appoint three key personnel namely chief compliance officer, nodal officer and grievance officer, and all these three personnel have to be residents in India.

BCCI forms seven-member working group for domestic cricket

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formed a seven-member working group, to look into the compensation package for the domestic players and the other aspects of domestic cricket.
  • The group will have the following members:
    • Rohan Jaitley (North Zone), Yudhvir Singh (Central Zone), Jaydev Shah (West Zone), Devajit Saikia (North-East Zone), Avishek Dalmiya (East Zone), and Santosh Menon and Mohammed Azharuddin (South Zone).
  • The main focus of the group will be the remuneration of domestic players for the previous season wherein tournaments were cancelled, due to COVID-19.

Manu Sawhney resigns as ICC CEO with immediate effect

  • International Cricket Council (ICC) CEO Manu Sawhney has resigned from his position on July 08, 2021, with immediate effect.
  • Geoff Allardice will continue as the Acting CEO of ICC, until fresh appointment.
  • Sawhney replaced Dave Richardson as the CEO of ICC in 2019 for a tenure till 2022.
  • It must be noted that ICC had suspended Sawhney since March 2021, due to a disciplinary inquiry after he came under scrutiny for his “abrasive behaviour” with colleagues.

Ashleigh Barty Beat Karolina Pliskova to Win Wimbledon 2021

  • In Tennis, Ashleigh Barty of Australia beat Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic), 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3, to win her first Wimbledon women’s single title on July 10, 2021.
  • The 25-year-old Barty is the first Australian woman to win the Wimbledon singles title in 41 years since Evonne Goolagong, who claimed her second All England Club title in 1980.
  • Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, which also includes the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open.
  • The tournament is held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877

Novak Djokovic Beats Matteo Berrettini to win 2021 Wimbledon Men’s Single Title 

  • In Tennis, Novak Djokovic defeated Matteo Berrettini in the Wimbledon final, 6-7(4-7), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3, to win his sixth Wimbledon title and 20th Grand Slam trophy.
  • With this win, he has equalled his total major men’s singles titles record with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, with each of them winning 20 titles.

  • Lionel Messi-led Argentina beat Neymar’s Brazil 1-0 to win the Copa America final match, held at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on July 10, 2021.
  • With this win, Lionel Messi has secured his first major International trophy.
  • The 2021 Copa America was the 47th edition of the annual international men’s football championship organised by South America’s football ruling body CONMEBOL.
  • Earlier the tournament was scheduled to be held in July 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • It was the first time since 1991 that no guest nation took part in the tournament.

  • The World Population Day is observed every year on July 11 to raise awareness of global population issues, including their relations to the environment.
  • The day was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989 in commemoration of the day in 1987, when the world reached the population of 5 billion.

  • The United Nations designated 12 July to be observed as World Malala Day, on July 12, 2013, in honour of the young Pakistani human rights activist, Malala Yousafzai.
  • July 12 also marks the birth anniversary of Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Prize laureate.
  • On her 16th birthday, on 12 July 2013, Yousafzai delivered speech at the United Nations (UN) headquarters on the need for gender equality in education, following which the day was declared as the World Malala Day by the UN.

Ayurveda Medicine Doyen, Dr P K Warrier, Passes Away at 100

  • Veteran Indian Ayurveda practitionerDr P.K. Warrier, who was the most respected name in Ayurveda across the world, has passed away. He was 100.
  • He was the chief Physician and Managing trustee of Arya Vaidya Sala, a healthcare centre located in Kottakkal, Kerala, and known for its heritage and expertise in Ayurveda.
  • The doyen of Ayurveda, Dr Warrier, was honoured with the Padma Shree in 1999 and Padma Bhushan in 2010.
  • His autobiography titled Smrithiparvam won the Kerala Sahitya Academy Award in 2009.
  • PM Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the passing away of such noted Ayurvedic physician, Dr. PK Warrier.
