India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant successfully completes five-day maiden sea voyage

  • India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) Vikrant began its maiden sea trials on August 04, 2021 from Kochi. The five-day sea voyage successfully completed on August 08, 2021.
  • The aircraft carrier Vikrant is expected to be commissioned into the Indian Navy in the second half of 2022. Once it enters service with the Indian Navy, the warship will be called as INS Vikrant.
  • This is the first as well as largest and most complex aircraft carrier designed and built in India.
  • Vikrant has been designed by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design (DND), and is being built at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).
  • Currently, India has only one aircraft carrier, namely INS Vikramaditya, made by Russia.

Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar launches ‘PM-DAKSH’ Portal and Mobile App

  • The Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Virendra Kumar unveiled a portal and mobile application named ‘PM-DAKSH’, which aims to make the skill development schemes accessible to the target groups.
  • The ‘PM-DAKSH’ stands for Pradhan Mantri Dakshta Aur Kushalta Sampann Hitgrahi (PM-DAKSH) Yojana.
  • The scheme is being implemented by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment from the year 2020-21.
  • The portal can be accessed at: http://pmdaksh.dosje.gov.in
  • The platform has been developed by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, in collaboration with National E-Governance Division (NeGD), under Department Of Electronics And Information Technology.

  • The Banker’s Innovation in Digital Banking Awards recognise the most innovative banks globally, for their digital banking initiatives, strategy, and overall commitment to digital transformation.

Centre Approves One-Year Extension to Rajiv Gauba’s term as Cabinet Secretary

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has extended the term of service of Rajiv Gauba, as the Cabinet Secretary of India, for a further period of one-year.
  • Gauba, a 1982-batch IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre, was appointed to the top bureaucratic post of the country in August 2019 for two years.
  • His term of service was to end on August 30, 2021.
  • Prior to this, Mr Gauba was Union Home Secretary from August 2017 to August 2019.

India-UAE Navy undertakes bilateral exercise ‘Zayed Talwar 2021’ off coast Abu Dhabi

  • The Indian Navy and UAE Navy conducted the bilateral naval exercise ‘Zayed Talwar 2021’ on August 07, 2021 off the coast of Abu Dhabi.
  • The main objective of the ‘Zayed Talwar 2021’ naval exercise was to enhance interoperability and synergy between the two navies.
  • Indian Navy participated with INS Kochi, with two integral Sea King MK 42B helicopters, deployed in the Persian Gulf.
  • From UAE, UAES AL – Dhafra, a Baynunah class guided missile corvette and one AS – 565B Panther helicopter took part in the exercise.

Indian Contingents Concludes with 7 Medals at 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics Games

  • The 2020 Summer Olympics came to an end on August 08, 2021. The international multi-sport event was held from July 23 to August 08, 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.
  • The United States has topped the overall medal table with 113 medals, which includes 39 Gold, 41 Silver and 33 Bronze Medal.
  • Indian Contingent managed to win 7 medals comprising 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze Medals. The country stood at 48th position in the medal table out of 86 countries.
  • India finished the Games with its best-ever Olympic medal tally of 7 in Tokyo Games 2020, surpassing the previous best record of 6 medals at 2012 London Olympic.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples: 9 August

  • The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (World Tribal Day) is observed on 9 August annually to protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population and recognize the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make to improve world issues such as environmental protection.
  • The day was recognised by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 1994.
  • The date to marks the day of the inaugural session of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations at the United Nations in 1982.
  • The theme for 2021 is “Leaving no one behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract.”
