India becomes first country to administer COVID-19 DNA vaccine

  • India has become the first country in the world to administer a DNA vaccine against COVID-19.
  • The ZyCoV-D which is the World’s first plasmid DNA vaccine has been produced by Ahmedabad-based vaccine manufacturer Zydus Cadila and it was administered for the first time in Patna On February 05, 2022.
  • It is a Painless and Needleless vaccine given at intervals of 28 days and 56 days. 
  • It is the second India-made vaccine to get emergency authorization in India after Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.

Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launches Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI) 4.0

  • Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, launched the Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI) 4.0 on February 07, 2022, virtually.
  • The IMI 4.0 will be conducted in 416 districts across 33 states/UTs.
  • The programme will be implemented in three rounds, of 7 days each.
  • The first round will begin from 7th February 2022, second round from 7th March 2022, and the third round from 4th April 2022.
  • In the first round 11 states will be covered. These are Assam, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura and Chhattisgarh.
  • Till date, ten phases of Mission Indradhanush have been completed covering 701 districts across the country. 

West Bengal Government launches Open-air Classroom ‘Paray Shikshalaya’

  • The West Bengal government has started an open-air classroom program, called Paray Shikshalaya (Neighborhood School), for students studying in primary and pre-primary classes.
  • Under this program, the students would be studying in an open area. 
  • The initiative has been started by the Bengal government keeping in mind the ongoing COVID pandemic situation, which has forced the students to stay back home and attend online classes. However, it was found that students remain absent from their classes and do not take their studies seriously in online classes. 
  • With this program, children will get accustomed to the physical classes. The government has selected clubs and parks to hold classes for standards 1 to 7.

Karnataka Bank wins digital transformation award, ‘DX 2021 Awards’ of CII

  • Karnataka Bank has won the digital transformation award, ‘DX 2021 Awards’ by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for Best Practice in Digital Transformation.
  • Karnataka Bank has won this award in recognition of the “innovative” best practice ‘KBL VIKAAS’, which was launched by the bank in 2017.

ICICI lombard partners with Airtel Payments Bank for Cyber Insurance

  • ICICI Lombard General Insurance has partnered with Airtel Payments Bank to offer cyber insurance to customers of Airtel Payments Bank.
  • This Cyber Insurance policy provides financial protection to customers against potential financial fraud relating to banking, credit or debit card; identity theft; phishing or email spoofing etc.
  • The policy will provide a 90-day discovery period followed by a seven-day reporting period.

Centre appoints Dinesh Prasad Saklani as new Director of NCERT

  • Dinesh Prasad Saklani has been appointed as the new Director of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), for five years.
  • He is currently a professor of history at the HNB Garhwal University, in Uttarakhand.
  • Saklani succeeds Hrushikesh Senapaty, whose five-year term ended in November 2020.
  • Sridhar Srivastava has been holding the position on interim charge since then.

Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit appointed as first woman Vice Chancellor of JNU

  • The Ministry of Education (MoE) has appointed Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit as the new Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on February 7, 2022. 
  • She is the first women Vice-Chancellor of JNU.
  • The 59-year-old Pandit has been appointed for a period of five years.
  • Pandit replaces M Jagadesh Kumar, who has been appointed as Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) (Read Here)
  • Before this appointment, Pandit was serving as the Vice-Chancellor of Savitribai Phule University in Maharashtra.

China beat South Korea to win AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 Football Tournament

  • China PR defeated South Korea (Korea Republic), 3-2, to win the AFC Women`s Asian Cup India 2022 final title at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on February 06, 2022.
  • This is the record-extending 9th AFC Women`s Asian Cup title won by China.

Sri Lankan fast bowler Suranga Lakmal announces retirement after upcoming tour of India

  • Veteran Sri Lankan fast bowler Suranga Lakmal has announced to retire from international cricket, after Sri Lanka’s upcoming tour of India, scheduled in February and March 2022 to play two Test and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches.
  • The 34-year-old right-arm fast bowler and right-handed batsman aim to join the English county club Derbyshire after retirement.
  • The Derbyshire County Cricket Club has signed up Lakmal on a two-year contract.
  • Lakmal has represented Sri Lanka in 165 international matches across formats, in his international career spanning over 12 years.

Former Greek President Christos Sartzetakis passes away at 93

  • Christos Sartzetakis, the former President of Greece, has passed away. He was 93.
  • Sartzetakis, who was a jurist by profession, served as the President of Greece from 1985 to 1990
