Tamil Nadu Tops in micro-irrigation coverage under PMKSY in 2019-20

  • The Tamil Nadu state has finished on top at the all-India level for micro-irrigation coverage in the financial year 2019-20, as part of implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY).
  • PMKSY is a programme aimed at promoting the “more crop per drop” concept by focussing on water-saving technologies.
  • During 2019-20, the overall coverage of the state under micro-irrigation stood at 2,06,853.25 hectares (ha).
  • Karnataka is at second place with 1,41,103.56 ha area under micro-irrigation while Gujarat is at third spot with 1,08,322.00 ha under micro-irrigation.
  • The total area brought under micro irrigation at the all-India level in 2019-20 stands at 7,72,350.63 ha

Coverage under the PMKSY during 2015-2020

  • However, speaking about the cumulative total coverage under the PMKSY during 2015-2020, the first place goes to Karnataka (8.16 lakh ha) followed by Andhra Pradesh (7.17 lakh ha) and Gujarat (7 lakh ha).
  • Tamil Nadu occupies the fourth spot with about 5.62 lakh ha.
  • During 2015-2020, 43.71 lakh ha of lands were brought under micro irrigation at the all-India level.

Ministry of Human Resources Development launches “Samadhan” a challenge to fight against covid19 and future challenges

  • Ministry of Human Resources Development in collaboration with All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has launched a mega online challenge – SAMADHAN – to test the ability of students to innovate in relation to COVID-19.
  • The students participating in this challenge will search and develop such measures that can be made available to the government agencies, health services, hospitals and other services for quick solutions to the Coronavirus epidemic and other such calamities.
  • Applications to participate in this competition will start from 7 April 2020. The last date for submission of applications is 14 April 2020.

Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir-Champa District Police Creates App ‘Rakhsa Sarv’ to keep an eye on home quarantined people

  • The district police of Janjgir-Champa in Chhattisgarh has created a mobile application named ‘Rakhsa Sarv’ to keep a tab on those violating the home quarantine order, in a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus.
  • The app has been developed with the help of Noida-based startup Mobcoder.
  • With the help of the Google Map, the district police will be able to track the people kept under home quarantine, after returning from foreign travel.
  • The purpose of launching the app is that a large number of people are kept in home quarantine, and so it is not possible to keep each one under surveillance on a regular basis.
  • A similar mobile app has been developed by the Mohali Police in Punjab named ‘Covid Control’ to keep an eye on home quarantined people to ensure quarantine protocols are being followed properly.

Supreme Court Extends Tenure of Justice Shiva Kirti Singh as TDSAT Chairman by 3 Months

  • The Supreme Court of India has extended the tenure of current Chairperson of Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), Justice Shiva Kirti Singh, by three more months.
  • This decision has bee taken by a bench comprising Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justices Sanjay K. Kaul & Deepak Gupta on 7 April 2020.
  • The 3 years term of Justice Shiva Kirti Singh (former Supreme Court judge) as TDSAT Chairperson was coming to an end on April 20, 2020.
  • He had assumed the office on April 21, 2017.

IWF Bans Thailand, Malaysia From Weightlifting Event At Tokyo Olympics

  • The Independent Member Federation Sanctions Panel (IMFSP) of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has imposed disciplinary sanctions on Thailand and Malaysia.
  • And so both the countries has been banned from participating in weightlifting events at the Tokyo Olympics.
  • Apart from this, IMFSP has also suspended the Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association (TAWA) for three years, while the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) has been given a one-year ban.
  • This ban will be effective from 1 April 2020.
  • The Tokyo Olympics 2020 will commence from July 23 to August 8 in 2021 while the Paralympics Games will be held from August 24 to September 5, 2021.

Former Libya Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril Passes Away Due to coronavirus at 68

  • Former Prime Minister of Libya, Mahmoud Jibril passed away in Egypt after contracting the coronavirus. He was 68.
  • Jibril served as the interim Prime Minister of Libya for seven and a half months during the Libyan Civil War, from 5 March to 23 October 2011.

Kannada actor Bullet Prakash passes away at 44

  • Kannada actor Bullet Prakash passed away at the age of 44 year. He was suffering from kidney-related ailment.
  • He is known for his comic roles and he was named ‘Bullet’ because of his love for Royal Enfield Bullet motorbikes which he used to ride. He was also a member of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

Film-theatre actor Sasi Kalinga passes away

  • Film-theatre actor Sasi Kalinga passed away at the age of 59 years.
  • He was from Kerala. His real name was V Chandrakumar, but the actor had been known as Sasi Kalinga throughout his decades-long acting career.

Four-year old female Malayan tiger named Nadia, at New York-based Bronx Zoo, has become the first of her kind to test positive for the coronavirus
