India’s First Mobile COVID-19 testing lab, developed by IISC, launched in Bengaluru

  • The Karnataka Government has launched a first-of-its-kind mobile COVID-19 laboratory on 5th August 2020.
  • The unique lab has been developed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
  • The mobile lab is the first Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-approved mobile RT-PCR Covid-19 testing laboratory in India.
  • The Mobile Infection Testing and Reporting (MITR) lab is capable of performing 9,000 RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) tests per month with 100% accurate results within four hours.
  • The MITR lab has been handed over to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) in Bengaluru.

India extends Line of Credit worth 18 million dollars to Maldives for Fisheries Development

  • The Government of India has extended Line of Credit (LoC) of USD 18 million to the Government of Maldives for the expansion of fishing facilities at Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).
  • The fund will be used for development of fish collection and storage facilities and setting up of a tuna cooked plant and fishmeal plant.
  • This grant is part of the 800 million US dollars line of credit offered by India with repayment tenor of 20 years and a 5-year moratorium.

RBI keeps repo rate unchanged in Monetary Policy Committee of August 2020

  • The Monetary Policy Committee of RBI met on 4th, 5th and 6th August for its second meeting of 2020-21. In the meeting, the following things have been mentioned.
  • The policy rates have been kept unchanged as:
    • Policy Repo Rate- 4.00%
    • Reverse Repo Rate- 3.35%
    • Marginal Standing Facility Rate and Bank Rate- 4.25%
    • CRR- 3%
    • SLR- 18%
  • The committee continues with the accommodative stance.

Manoj Sinha takes charge as new Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir After GC Murmu Resigns

  • The incumbent Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Girish Chandra Murmu has resigned from the post on 5 August 2020.
  • 5 August also marks the first anniversary of abrogation of Article 370 by Centre, to scrap special status to Jammu and Kashmir and turn it into two union territories
  • Murmu was the first L-G of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, who took charge on October 31, 2019, under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
  • Following Murmu’s resignation, Manoj Sinha, a senior BJP leader and former Union Minister, has been appointed as the new LG of the UT of Jammu & Kashmir.
  • The 61-year-old Manoj Sinha, was a Minister of State for Communications and Minister of State for Railways in the first term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Girish Chandra Murmu appointed as new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India

  • Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Girish Chandra Murmu has been appointed as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. He will assume office on 8 August 2020.
  • Murmu is the 14th CAG of India.
  • He will replace Rajiv Mehrishi, a 1978 batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, as the CAG.
  • Murmu, a 1985 batch IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre, was the first Lt Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
  • He was Principal Secretary to Narendra Modi when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Centre Extends Ajay Tyagi’s Tenure as SEBI Chairman by 18-Months till February 2022

  • The Ministry of Finance has extended the tenure of Ajay Tyagi as the chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a period of 18-months.
  • His extended term will begin with effect from September 1, 2020 and continue atleast up to February 28, 2022.
  • Mr Tyagi, a 1984 batch IAS (retired) officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre, was appointed as the SEBI chairman in March 2017 for three years.
  • This is the second extension given to Tyagi.
  • The first one was granted in March 2020 for six months, which will expire on 31 August 2020.

  • The new book, titled “RAW: A History of India’s Covert Operations”, has been launched, which gives a peep into the heroic covert operations carried by India’s external spy agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).
  • The book has been written by investigative journalist and author Yatish Yadav. It has been published by Westland.
  • The book gives a detailed account of the unanswered questions surrounding the spy agency like its operatives, and also reveals hitherto unknown aspects of their life, trauma and temptation, triumphs and setbacks in executing each of their “Mission Impossible”.

Renowned TV actor Sameer Sharma passes away due to suicide

  • Veteran Television actor Sameer Sharma is no more.
  • The 44-year-old actor committed suicide on 5 August 2020, by hanging from the kitchen ceiling of his home.
  • Sharma has been part of some renowned TV serials like ‘Geet – Hui Sabse Parayi’, ‘Left Right Left’, ‘Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii’, ‘Four’ and ‘Ssshhhh….Koi Hai’.
  • He was also seen in Sidharth Malhotra’s movies ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ and ‘Ittefaq’.

Veteran CPI(M) leader and former West Bengal Minister Shyamal Chakraborty passes away of COVID-19

  • A senior CPI(M) leader and former West Bengal transport minister, Shyamal Chakraborty has passed away. He was 76.
  • Chakraborty served as the transport minister of West Bengal for three-times from 1982 to 1996.
  • He was also a two-time Rajya Sabha member.
  • Apart from this, he was also the state president of Centre of Indian Trade Unions, (CITU), the trade union arm of CPM.

World Lung Cancer Day: 1 August

  • Every year, the World Lung Cancer Day is observed on August 1 to raise awareness about the causes and treatment of lung cancer and highlight the issues of lack of sufficient research funding for the ailment.
  • The campaign was first organised in 2012 by the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) , in collaboration with the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and also the American College of Chest Physicians.
  • The IASLC is the largest organisation in the world of its kind that only deals with lung cancer.
