India Commemorates “Chabahar Day” on 04 March 2021

  • India commemorated the ‘Chabahar Day’ on March 04, 2021 on the sidelines of the Maritime India Summit-2021 which was held from March 2-4, 2021.
  • The virtual event was attended by ministers from Russia, Afghanistan, Armenia, Iran, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Chabahar Port

  • The commemoration was part of the strategy of India to boost its involvement in the Chabahar Port, which is New Delhi’s key gateway to Afghanistan.
  • Chabahar Port is a seaport located in southeastern Iran, on the Gulf of Oman.
  • The location of the Chabahar port has strategic advantage and high potential to provide connectivity among India, Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and other Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, and boost trade.
  • It is a key pillar of India’s Indo-Pacific vision, to connect Eurasia with the Indian Ocean Region.
  • The Port will also be part of INSTC network connecting Mumbai with Russia via Iran.

DRDO successfully flight test SFDR technology

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted successful flight test of Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) technology on March 05, 2021 from the integrated test range (ITR), Chandipur, off Odisha coast.
  • The success of SFDR technology will enable DRDO to develop long-range air to air missiles.
  • The SFDR  is a missile propulsion system being developed primarily by the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad.
  • The High Energy Material Research Laboratory (HEMRL) has developed the nozzle-less booster while the ramjet engine is being developed with Russian assistance.

Australia plans to build world’s first platypus sanctuary to promote breeding and rehabilitation

  • The Australian conservationists have unveiled their plan to build the world’s first refuge for the platypus, a duck-billed mammal, that are facing extinction due to climate change.
  • The new facility will promote breeding and rehabilitation of these iconic creatures, which are native to Australia.
  • The Taronga Conservation Society Australia and the New South Wales State government plans to build the specialist facility by 2022, at a zoo 391-km from Sydney.
  • The facility would contain mostly ponds and burrows for the semiaquatic creatures, and could house up to 65 platypuses.

India-Sweden Virtual Summit 2021

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the virtual India-Sweden summit on March 05, 2021, with the Prime Minister of Sweden, Stefan Lofven.
  • The virtual summit was organised to exchange views on regional and global issues and to discuss the bilateral relations between the two countries.
  • This was the fifth interaction between the two leaders since 2015.

NPCI Partners SBI Payments to launch “RuPay SoftPoS” for Merchants

  • National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and SBI Payments have partnered to launch “RuPay SoftPoS” for Indian merchants.
  • RuPay SoftPoS will enable merchants to use their near-field communication (NFC)-enabled smartphones as point of sale (PoS) terminals and accept payment up to Rs 5,000 through a simple tap and pay mechanism.
  • Merchants can convert their existing android smartphone devices into a payment terminal by simply downloading a supported app.
  • The RuPay SoftPoS solution will provide cost effective acceptance infrastructure to retailers at nominal cost.

Second Edition of Khelo India Winter Games Concludes as J&K Tops Medal Tally

  • The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has topped the medals tally in the second edition of Khelo India Winter National Games.
  • The five-day mega sports event was held from February 26 to March 02, 2021, at the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir.
  • J&K won 11 gold, 18 silver and 5 bronze medals. It was followed by Karnataka [5 Gold and 4 Bronze] and Maharashtra [ 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze medals].
  • The event was organised by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the J&K Sports Council and the Winter Games Association of Jammu and Kashmir. 
  • More than 1,000 athletes from 27 states and union territories took part.

Indian Women’s Trap Team wins silver at ISSF Shotgun World Cup, taking country’s final medal tally to 2

  • The Indian Women’s Trap team trio of Kirti Gupta, Manisha Keer and Rajeshwari Kumari won a silver medal in International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Shotgun 2021, in Cairo, Egypt.
  • The trio lost to Russia’s Ekaterina Subbotina, Dana Semianova, Luliia Saveleva, 4-6 in the finals.
  • With this, the Indian team managed to collect two medals at the tournament. Earlier , Men’s Skeet team bagged a bronze medal.
