Donald Trump announced Wilmington as the first World War II Heritage City

  • Donald Trump, President of the USA has announced Wilmington (located in southern US state North Carolina) as the first World War II Heritage City.
  • The announcement was made at a ceremony held to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. September 2, 2020 marks the 75th Commemoration of the End of World War II.
  • During the war, Wilmington was the site of the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company, which built 243 ships in five years as part of the federal government’s emergency shipbuilding program.

Rajnath Singh attends SCO Defence Minister meet in Moscow; inks deal with Russia to manufacture AK-47 203 rifles

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the joint meeting of the Defence Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Moscow. Russia on 4 September 2020.
  • Mr. Singh was on three-day visit to Russia from 3-5 September 2020 to attend the combined meeting of Defence Ministers of SCO, CIS and CSTO members.
  • Rajnath Singh will also be participating in the 75th anniversary event to commemorate Victory Day.

Deal with Russia to manufacture AK-47 203 rifles

  • During his visit, Rajnath Singh, on behalf of India finalised a major deal with Russia on 3rd September 2020 for the manufacturing of AK-47 203 rifles.
  • The deal says that the Indian Army has a requirement of 7,70,000 AK-47 203 rifles. Of this total number, 1,00,000 will be imported and the rest will be manufactured in India.
  • The AK-47 203 is the latest and most advanced version of the AK-47 rifle.
  • It will replace the Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) 5.56×45 mm assault rifle.

India attends Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) Meeting of BIMSTEC

  • India participated in the Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) of the regional grouping BIMSTEC on 2 September 2020 to discuss ways to further expand cooperation among its member nations to effectively deal with key challenges including impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The key meeting of BIMSTEC was held under the chairmanship of Sri Lanka.
  • The Indian delegation at the meeting was headed by Secretary (East) in Ministry of External Affairs Vijay Thakur Singh.
  • Some key areas of discussion included ways to deepen cooperation among the member nations including cooperation in dealing with economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic and holding of the next summit of the grouping.

Saudi Arabia Chairs G20 Foreign Ministers’ Extraordinary Meeting, S. Jaishankar Represents India

  • The G20 Foreign Ministers’ Extraordinary Meeting was held on 3 September 2020 under the current Chair, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis.
  • The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Highness Prince Faisal Bin Farhan Al-Saud, chaired the virtual meeting.
  • From India External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar represented the meeting.
  • The discussions were held on strengthening international cooperation across borders in wake of COVID-19 crisis.
  • Dr. S. Jaishankar also proposed development of voluntary ‘G20 Principles on Coordinated Cross-Border Movement of People’ with three elements:
    1. Standardisation of testing procedures and universal acceptability of test results;
    2. Standardisation of ‘Quarantine procedures’;
    3. Standardisation of ‘movement and transit’ protocols.

Arjun Munda inaugurates Two Days National Tribal Research Conclave virtually

  • The Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Shri Arjun Munda virtually inaugurated the two day National Tribal Research Conclave which is being held from 3-4 September 2020.
  • The Conclave has been organized by the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Tribal Affairs, Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA).
  • The main objective of the conclave is to review the progress of various projects being implemented under different partnerships and the best practices to be show cased to all stakeholders
  • The Conclave was attended by more than 100 participants from all over the country.
  • This is the second workshop of its kind. First such workshop was organized in January 2020.

SCO Heads of Government Summit to be held in India on 30 November

  • India will host the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit of the council of heads of government on November 30, 2020 in New Delhi.
  • This SCO Summit is the 19th edition of the council of heads of government meeting of SCO.
  • India is hosting this summit for the first time after its admission into the grouping in 2017.

Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)

  • Beijing-based SCO is an eight-nation regional grouping comprising of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan.
  • India was an observer at the SCO since 2005 and became its full member in 2017 along with Pakistan.

Defence Exercise


11th India-Russia biennial bilateral maritime naval exercise ‘INDRA NAVY’ organised in Bay of Bengal

  • The 11th edition of the biennial bilateral maritime exercise INDRA NAVY between Indian Navy and Russian Navy has been organised from 4-5 September 2020 in the Bay of Bengal.
  • The primary aim of the two day exercise is to further boost the inter-operability built up by the two Navies over the years and enhance understanding and procedures for multi-faceted maritime operations between the two Navies.
  • INDRA NAVY-20 would be undertaken in a ‘non-contact, at sea only’ format due to restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The Indian Navy will be represented by guided missile destroyer Ranvijay, indigenous frigate Sahyadri and fleet tanker Shakti, along with their integral helicopters.
  • The Russian Federation Navy will be represented by destroyer Admiral Vinogradov, destroyer Admiral Tributs and fleet tanker Boris Butoma of the Pacific Fleet, based at Vladivostok.

RBL Bank launches cardless cash withdrawal facility through ATMs via MoBank app

  • RBL Bank has partnered with Empays Payment Systems to launch a cardless cash withdrawal facility from ATMs by leveraging the Instant Money Transfer (IMT) system.
  • Customers can use RBL Bank’s MoBank app for this IMT function and initiate cash withdrawal by either using his or her mobile number linked to the account or by following a few easy steps on the app.

Aditya Birla Idea Payments Bank ceased to be a banking company: RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India has issued a notification to all banks on September 03, 2020 stating that “Aditya Birla Idea Payments Bank Limited” has ceased to be a banking company within the meaning of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 with effect from July 28, 2020.
  • Apart from this, “Westpac Banking Corporation” also ceases to be a banking company as announced by RBI.

SIDBI extends state-wise MSME support programme to 11 states

  • SIDBI in association with the Maharashtra state government will be setting up a Project Management Unit (PMU), in order to boost the MSME ecosystem in Maharashtra.
  • The role of PMU will be to design schemes and programs in the areas of equity support, interest subvention, resolution of stressed MSMEs, and supporting them. It will also facilitate other need-based interventions based on an evaluation of the existing status of MSMEs.
  • Apart from Maharashtra, the bank has already appointed an agency that would look at setting up PMUs in 10 other states- Assam, New Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Infosys to acquire US-based firm Kaleidoscope for $42 million

  • Infosys has announced that it would acquire product design and development firm, Kaleidoscope Innovation for up to $42 million.
  • Kaleidoscope is a US-based firm and would bring to Infosys a diverse talent pool with extensive knowledge of design and engineering.

Murali Ramakrishnan appointed as MD and CEO of South Indian Bank

  • Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment of Murali Ramakrishnan as the MD and CEO of South Indian Bank.
  • He will take charge from October 1, 2020 for a term of three years.
  • He has worked at ICICI Bank as Senior General Manager at Strategic Project Group. He retired in May 2020 from ICICI Bank.

S Krishnan appointed as MD and CEO of Punjab & Sind Bank

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of S Krishnan as Managing Director and CEO of Punjab & Sind Bank.
  • Prior to this, Krishnan was an Executive Director at state-owned Canara Bank.
  • He will replace S Harishankar, who has been granted permission by ACC to retire on voluntary basis.

Pope Francis’ new book “Let Us Dream” to hit stands on 1st December

  • Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, has penned a new book titled “Let Us Dream”.
  • In this book, the preeminent spiritual leader explains about what Covid-19 crisis can teach us about how to handle upheaval of any kind in our own lives and the world at large and how it can be made a safer, fairer, and a healthier place for people to live in.
  • The book is scheduled to hit the stands on December 1, 2020 in English and Spanish editions simultaneously.
  • It has been published by Simon & Schuster.

Indian GM P. Iniyan wins World Open Online Chess Tournament

  • Indian Grandmaster P Iniyan won the 48th edition of the prestigious Annual World Open online chess tournament held recently.
  • The Tamil Nadu player scored 7.5 points from nine games with six victories and three draws to finish on top.
  • The 17-year-old Iniyan tied his score with GM Sanan Sjugirov (Russia) but emerged winner because of a better tie-break score.
  • A total of 122 participants from 16 countries participated in the online tournament including India, USA, UK, Russia, Spain, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Poland, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Israel, Bangladesh, Mexico, Peru and Cuba.

International Day of Charity : 5 September

  • The International Day of Charity is observed annually on 5 September. It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.
  • September 5 was chosen in order to commemorate the death anniversary of Mother Teresa, who had always been engaged in charitable work.
  • The prime purpose of the International Day of Charity is to raise awareness and provide a common platform for charity related activities all over the world for individuals, charitable, philanthropic and volunteer organizations for their own purposes on the local, national, regional and international level.

Obituary


Former England Cricket allrounder David Capel passes away at 57

  • David Capel, England’s former legendary cricket all-rounder has passed away after a long illness. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2018. He was 57.
  • Capel played 15 Tests and 23 one-day internationals for England from 1987-1990.
  • Capel made 270 first-class appearances for the English county side, Northamptonshire, from 1981-1998 and became the first cricketer born in the county to play a Test for England in 77 years.
  • He had also served as the assistant coach of the England women’s cricket team as well as the head coach of the Bangladesh women’s cricket team.
