Kerala Tops SDG India Index 2020–21 Released by NITI Aayog 

  • The NITI Aayog Vice-Chairperson Dr Rajiv Kumar released the third edition of the SDG India Index and Dashboard 2020–21 on June 03, 2021.
  • The basic aim of the index is to comprehensively monitor and rank the progress made by States and Union Territories towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
  • The theme of SDG India Index and Dashboard 2020–21 is Partnerships in the Decade of Action 
  • The third edition covers 16 Goals of SDG, with a qualitative assessment on Goal 17 and 115 quantitative indicators, covering 70 SDG targets.
  • States and Union Territories are ranked based on their SDG India Index score as below:
    1. Aspirant: 0–49
    2. Performer: 50–64
    3. Front-Runner: 65–99
    4. Achiever: 100
  • Top States in SDG India Index 2020–21: Kerala (75)
  • Bottom 5 States in SDG India Index 2020–21:Bihar (52)

Thaawarchand Gehlot Launches SAGE Programme and Portal to support India’s Elderly Persons

  • The Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot virtually launched an initiative called, SAGE (Seniorcare Aging Growth Engine) on June 04, 2021, and also the SAGE portal to support India’s elderly persons.
  • The SAGE portal will act as a “one-stop access” of elderly care products and services by credible start-ups.
  • The start-ups will be selected under SAGE on the basis of innovative products and services, which they should be able to provide across sectors such as health, housing, care centers, apart from technological access linked to finances, food and wealth management, and legal guidance.
  • The basic aim of this initiative is to involve youth for elderly care by way of start-ups and their innovative ideas to make the elderly care a national movement than just a government programme.

Government extends validity period of Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) from 7 years to Lifetime

  • The Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ has announced that the validity period of the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) qualifying certificate has been extended from the presen7 years to lifetime with retrospective effect from 2011.
  • Now, the respective state government and union territories will take necessary action to issue fresh TET certificates to those candidates whose 7 years period has already elapsed.
  • This decision will prove to be a positive step in increasing the employment opportunities for candidates aspiring to make a career in the teaching field.

RBI launches On-Tap Liquidity Window worth Rs 15,000 crore for Contact-Intensive Sectors

  • The Reserve Bank of India has launched a separate liquidity window of Rs. 15,000 crore certain contact-intensive sectors.
  • These shall include hotels and restaurants; tourism – travel agents, tour operators and adventure/heritage facilities; aviation ancillary services – ground handling and supply chain; and other services that include private bus operators, car repair services, rent-a-car service providers, event/conference organisers, spa clinics, and beauty parlours/saloons.
  • The tenors of this window shall be of up to three years at a rate of repo rate. The facility will be available till March 31, 2022.
  • Under this scheme, RBI has advised commercial banks to create a COVID loan book. The loans given to contact-intensive sectors under this window shall form a part of this COVID loan book. Now banks will have the facility to park their surplus liquidity up to the size of the COVID loan book with RBI at a rate of (Repo Rate-0.25%). (special 14-day reverse repo window will be opened for this.)

RBI Keeps Repo Rate Unchanged at 4% in MPC meet June 2021

  • The Reserve Bank of India has decided to keep the Repo Rate unchanged in the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting held between June 2-June 4, 2021. RBI has continued with the accommodative stance.
  • RBI has projected the real GDP growth for India at 9.5% in 2021-22.

  • World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on June 05 every year to raise awareness and encourage action for the protection of our environment. 
  • The theme for World Environment Day 2021 is “Ecosystem Restoration”. 
  • The host country for 2021 World Environment Day is Pakistan. 
  • WED was first established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to tackle the emerging environmental issues of pollution, global warming, human overpopulation, sustainable consumption and wildlife crime. 
  • The first WED was held in 1974.

Former President and Prime Minister of Mauritius Sir Anerood Jugnauth Passes Away at 91

  • Sir Anerood Jugnauth, the former President and also Prime Minister of Mauritius, has passed away. He was 91.
  • Jugnauth, who was a lawyer by profession, had served as Mauritius’ President twice, from 2003 to 2012. 
  • Apart from this, he was elected as the Prime Minister of the country six times, from 1982 to 2017.
  • Jugnauth was accorded with India’s second highest civilian honour Padma Vibhushan in 2020.
