Kashi Vishwanath Dham-based tableau of Uttar Pradesh wins best state tableau of Republic Day parade 2022

  • The tableau of Uttar Pradesh has been picked as the best tableau among the 12 States/UTs which participated in the Republic Day parade on January 26, 2022.
  • The theme of tableau of Uttar Pradesh wasOne District One Product and Kashi Vishwanath Dham’.
  • The popular choice category award was introduced for the first time in 2022, wherein the general public was invited to vote for the best marching contingents and best tableaux through the MyGov platform. The online poll was conducted between January 25-31, 2022.
    • Best state/UTs Tableau – Maharashtra (Theme ‘Biodiversity and State Bio-symbols of Maharashtra’.)

India’s unemployment rate in January 2022 stood at 6.57%; Telangana witnessed lowest unemployment rate and Haryana recorded highest unemployment rate: CMIE Report

  • The unemployment rate in India in January 2022 fell sharply to 6.57%, according to the data from economic think-tank,  Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). This is the lowest rate witnessed since March 2021.
  • In December 2021, the unemployment rate rose to a four-month high of 7.91%, compared to 6.97% in November.
  • State with lowest unemployment rate
    • Telangana recorded lowest unemployment rate in January at 0.7%.
    • This was followed by Gujarat at 1.2%, Meghalaya at 1.5%, Odisha at 1.8% and Karnataka at 2.9%.
  • State with highest unemployment rate
    • Haryana witnessed highest unemployment rate of 23.4% in January 2022. It was followed by Rajasthan (18.9%), Tripura (17.1%), Jammu & Kashmir (15%) and Delhi (14.1%).
  • Area wise data showed that the rural unemployment in January 2022 declined to 5.84% as against 7.28% in December 2021.
    • The urban unemployment was recorded at 8.16% compared to 9.30% in December 2021.

  • Cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been portrayed as the superhero Atharva in this graphic novel.
  • The graphic novel is authored by Ramesh Thamilmani.

NSO releases First Revised Estimates: shows GDP contraction of 6.6 per cent during 2020-21

  • The National Statistical Office (NSO) has released the First Revised Estimates of National Income, Consumption Expenditure, Saving and Capital Formation for the financial year 2020-21. NSO comes under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
  • As per the first revised estimates released by NSO, the GDP contracted by 6.6% in FY21 (2020-21). In the first advance estimates, NSO had predicted this as a contraction of 7.3%.
  • GDP growth in 2019-20 (as per NSO)= 3.7%
  • The Real GDP of India for 2020-21 was ₹135.58 lakh crore as per the First revised estimate of NSO.

  • A short biography of Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra titled ‘Golden Boy Neeraj Chopra’ authored by Navdeep Singh Gill has been released.
  • Navdeep is a sports author. Neeraj Chopra won a Gold medal in Javelin Throw at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Centre appoints Sonali Singh as Controller General of Accounts (CGA) on additional charge

  • The Government of India has appointed Sonali Singh to hold the additional charge of the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), under the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, with effect from February 01, 2022.
  • Sonali Singh is serving as the Additional Controller General of Accounts since October 2019.
  • She has been appointed in place of Dipak Dash, who superannuated on January 31, 2022.
  • Sonali is a 1987 batch officer of Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS).

Govt appoints JNU Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar as new Chairman of UGC

  • Centre has appointed JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) Vice Chancellor, M Jagadesh Kumar as the new Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
  • He has been appointed for a period of five years or till he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is the earliest.
  • The post of the UGC Chairman was vacant since December 07, 2021, after Prof D P Singh resigned upon attaining 65 years of age. He was appointed in 2018.

IndiGo’s co-founder and promoter Rahul Bhatia appointed as first MD of the company

  • The low-cost Indian airline, IndiGo has appointed its co-founder and promoter Rahul Bhatia as the Managing Director (MD) of the company with immediate effect on February 04, 2022.
  • Bhatia is the first ever MD of Indigo, because before this the company never had a managing director.
  • Ronojoy Dutta is the CEO of the Indigo.
  • IndiGo is India’s biggest airline by market share. It is headquartered at Gurgaon, Haryana.

Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand wins ICC Spirit of Cricket Award 2021

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has selected New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell as the winner of the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award 2021.
  • Mitchell won the award for his gesture during the T20 World Cup semi-final in Abu Dhabi on November 10, 2021 against England in which he did not take an easy single during the game as he felt he had “obstructed” the way of bowler Adil Rashid in that moment.
  • Mitchell is the fourth New Zealand player to win the award. Other three players include Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson.

2022 Winter Olympics begins at Beijing, India announces diplomatic boycott of opening and closing ceremony

  • The 2022 Winter Olympics kicked off on February 04, 2022 in Beijing, China and will continue till February 20, 2022.
  • The Opening Ceremony was held at Beijing’s National Stadium, also known as the Bird’s Nest on February 04, 2022.
  • However, India had announced diplomatic level boycott of Beijing Winter Olympics opening and closing ceremony. This means that no Indian officials will attend the opening and closing ceremony.
  • However, the country has sent one of its athletes, Arif Khan (skier), to attend the event.
  • Reason behind the boycott: China has picked a Chinese soldier (Qi Fabao) as Olympic torchbearer, who was involved in the Galwan incident on June 15, 2020, which had resulted in the death of 20 Indian soldiers, including a Colonel.
