Uttarakhand unveils India’s first earthquake early warning mobile app

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched the first-of-its kind earthquake early warning mobile application, named ‘Uttarakhand Bhookamp Alert’, on August 04, 2021.
  • The Uttarakhand Bhookamp Alert is India’s first earthquake early warning’ app for notifying people about earthquake alerts.
  • The app has been developed by IIT Roorkee, in association with Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA).
  • Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) mobile app can detect the onset of the earthquake and issue warnings regarding an earthquake occurrence in the neighbourhood and the expected time of arrival and intensity at the location to prevent any loss of life.

INS Khanjar becomes first Indian Navy ship to call at heritage coastal port of Gopalpur in Odisha

  • Indian Naval Ship Khanjar has become the first Indian Navy ship to call at the heritage coastal port of Gopalpur in Odisha.
  • INS Khanjar visited Gopalpur port as part of two-days Aazadi ka Amrit Mahotsav as well as Swarnim Vijay Varsh celebrations organised on August 01 – 02, 2021, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Independence and 50th anniversary of the 1971 War.
  • The visit of the ship was aimed at enhancing ties and spreading awareness with the local population on aspects of coastal security and maritime operations.

BRO Builds World’s Highest Motorable Road In Ladakh at 19,300 ft

  • The world’s highest motorable road has been constructed at Umlingla Pass in eastern Ladakh by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
  • The 52-km-long tarmac road at Umlingla Pass has been constructed at an altitude of 19,300 feet.
  • Before this, the highest motorable road was in Bolivia at 18,953 ft, connecting to its volcano Uturuncu.
  • The black top road at Umlingla Pass will now help to enhance socio-economic condition and promote tourism in Ladakh.

Pakistani climber Shehroze Kashif becomes youngest mountaineer in the world to scale Mt. K2

  • A 19-year old Pakistani climber named Shehroz Kashif has become the youngest mountaineer in the world to reach the summit of K2, the second-highest peak in the world.
  • He achieved the feat of scaling the 8,611-metre high peak with the aid of bottled oxygen, on July 27, 2021.
  • Prior to Kashif, Sajid Sadpara, the son of the legendary climber Muhammad Ali Sadpara, was the youngest person to have climbed K2 at the age of 20.

World Bank approves $250 million project to make India’s existing dams safe and resilient

  • The World Bank has approved a USD 250 million project in India for long-term dam safety program and improving the safety and performance of existing dams across various states of India.
  • The Second Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP-2) agreement was inked on August 04, 2021 between the World Bank, Government of India, the Central Water Commission, and government representatives from 10 participating states.
  • The project will be implemented at the national level through the Central Water Commission (CWC).
  • At state level, approximately 120 dams will be undertaken across the states of Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu.
  • Other states or agencies may be added to the project during project implementation.

Indian Economists Dr Jagdish Bhagwati and Dr C Rangarajan conferred with inaugural Prof CR Rao Centenary Gold Medal

  • Two Indian economic scholars, Dr Jagdish Bhagwati and Dr C Rangarajan have been conferred with the inaugural Prof CR Rao Centenary Gold Medal (CGM) by the Indian Econometric Society (TIES) Trust.
  • The award has been constituted by the TIES to commemorate the contribution of Prof Rao, an Indian-American mathematician and statistician, who is the founder president of the TIES, and doyen of mathematical statistics.
  • The award will be given once in two years to an Indian or Indian-origin scholar for her/his lifetime contributions to the fields of theoretical and applied aspects of quantitative economics, and official statistics. 
  • Prof CR Rao Centenary Gold Medal (CGM) consists of a gold medal and citation.

  • Mini Ipe has been appointed as the Managing Director of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India.
  • A postgraduate in Commerce from Andhra University, Ipe joined LIC in 1986 as a direct recruit office.
  • Prior to taking charge as Managing Director, she was Executive Director, Legal Department, LIC of India.
  • Ipe was also the first woman zonal manager (In-charge) of LIC and headed the Hyderabad zone.

Ebrahim Raisi sworn in as new President of Iran

  • Ebrahim Raisi was officially sworn in as the new president of Iran on August 05, 2021.
  • He won the 2021 Iranian presidential election in June, with 62 percent of the vote.
  • The 60-year-old Raisi succeeds Hassan Rouhani to begin his four year term.
  • He is also the Chief Justice of Iran since March 2019.

  • Manan Bhatt is a Retired non-commissioned officer of the Indian Navy who participated in Kargil War and Operation Parakram.
  • The book is published by the Garuda Prakashan.
  • The book has captured the real-life events surrounding February 2019 Pulwama suicide bombing attack, and India’s strong hit-back in the form of Balakot airstrikes twelve days later.

Boxer Lovlina Borgohain settles for bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020

  • India boxer Lovlina Borgohain has won bronze medal after losing, 0-5 , to top seed Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey, in the Women’s Welter (64-69kg) semi-final bout on August 04, 2021.
  • The 23-year-old Lovlina is the only third Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics after Vijender Singh (2008) and MC Mary Kom (2012).
  • She hails from the Golaghat district of Assam.

  • Indian national men’s hockey team defeated Germany, 5-4, to win the bronze medal match at Tokyo Olympics 2020 on August 05, 2021.
  • Indian team has claimed the medal in hockey after a gap of 41-year.
  • Last time team India won a medal in hockey was at the 1980 Moscow Games when they won the gold.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya wins silver medal for India in men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling

  • Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya settled for silver medal in 57kg freestyle final, after losing 4-7, to Russian two-time defending world champion Zavur Uguev, at Tokyo Olympics on August 05, 2021.
  • Ravi Kumar is the only second Indian wrestler to win an Olympic silver after Sushil Kumar, who won silver in the 2012 London Olympics.
  • Also, this is the fifth medal overall at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and India’s second silver medal.

Hiroshima Day (Anti Nuclear Day/ Nagasaki Day) : 06 August

  • Hiroshima Day takes place every year on August 6 to commemorate the day in August 1945 when an atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6 by United States, followed a few days later by another drop on the city of Nagasaki on August 9.
  • Although these bombings effectively ended World War II, the two cities were terribly destroyed and casualties were estimated at around 200,000, mostly civilians.
  • This was the first time in the history of warfare when a nuclear bomb was used against a nation.
  • The Day is observed to advocate, pray and work for a ban on all nuclear weapons and an end to war and violence through anti-war and anti-nuclear discussions and demonstrations around the world.
  • 2021 marks the 76th anniversary of the world’s first atomic bombing.
